How about the 100th thread on how much Retro sucks? I've been out of touch for the last week and, upon returning home last night, was thrilled to see that the tracklisting for the much anticipated box set was finally published. But after reading through the tracks, my entire week was ruined. I can't believe we all waited 4 years for this pile of crap.

Who's supposed to buy this anyway?

Let's see, we have Substance, Best of, Rest of, International and now Retro. Their catalogue is almost as ridiculous as The Smiths'. Who knows, maybe Warner will make the pre-GetReady promo cd "20 Years of New Order" commercially available too?

What a joke!

I know most NO fans aren't too thrilled with the new box set but how much will still go out and buy it? I know I will simply because it's New Order. The record companies know fans will still buy it whether or not they like it. They don't care what people think as long as it sells.

All this whining about IV has me so close to never returning to this site again. What a bunch of whiney little babies! Doesn't anyone have anything of use to say these days? All these fanatical fans who have everything they ever did, every rarity, every love show.. etc etc etc. Make your own box set and save us all the complaining. Like I said before, the record company could give a crap less about what a bunch of old band lovers think. New Order (despite their longevity) is part their time, outdated, will never be a big sell, and will never get any better. I love them, you love them, but that doesn't matter. You might as well get used to the fact that NO is dying, the disease is terminal, so start saying goodbye now. Death is coming... soon. Either be happy with your tons of bootlegs or get the anthologies. That is the best NO material you will ever see. They won't sell now, they haven't sold in years, they are a risk and record companies do like over aged, post prime risks. Now let's move beyond it.

Unfortunately, you're exactly right. The reason we're all so pissed about this is b/c its another major sign that the band will likely never be what it once was.

The first sign was GG not playing at the gigs - and now this. Its just hard to admit to ourselves.

We just have to let them go, remember the good times, remind other people about the golden age of music, and then find something else that's new to fall in love with. I have always loved New Order (since I was 14 - now 32). It will be hard to never see something new in the record store by your favorite band, but let's face it Heart And Soul was the last great NO/JD item... Get Ready was good, but not great.

what memories? i was a baby when those guys were at their prime...barely able to count. oh well, can't help that. just makes you realise, you better enjoy your favourite bands when they're at their prime, cuz a lot of them will be gone in the future.

then there are bands that shouldn't be around....can anyone explain to me why simple minds did a concert in toronto in the summer? urgh. i wish that was NO up there on that stage.

OK, I was disappointed when I saw the track listing.

What everyone seems to be moaning about is that this box set doesn't match up to what was promised in '98.

And that is a very important distinction to make...this is NOT "Recycle", and shouldn't even be held up in comparison. Hooky stated that the rationale behind "Recycle" would be for the band to collect together everything that hadn't been released on CD before, and include some rarities as well.

The band had no input into "Retro", so don't contemplate suicide just because the original 7" of Temptation isn't on it!

You never know, "Recycle" still might see the light of day.....

...and all pigs are fuelled ready for take-off!!

STOP WHINING!!!

Retro is about making money, there hardly going to make a profit if they package together the obscure selection us guys would no doubt like to see on the compilation.

I'd hazard a guess that they havent aimed so much aimed the release of this RETRO to the participants of an internet forum ;) more to the general public browsing HMV and such like...

As someone said in another thread, if your a fan and you know what you want on your "ideal" compilation then make your own up!!

I'll pretty much guarentee that after a few listens you'll even want to tweak your own selections! so the most marketable choice is to go for the most generally appealing tracks.

... yeah but Don, a lot of us already own the previous best ofs. Don't you?

Ironically, this box set 'is' a re-hash of other best ofs isn't it.

Agreed its a rehash of their "best of" however...

whats the agenda for "best of" i think we are to assume it their most successful and popular tracks, yes?

Ok, so lets face it were not talking about the Beatles here!! theres only a dozen or so tracks that can realistically make up their "best of" !

and RETRO has some live additions to the best/rest of which quite frankly will be of more interest to me than the standard released material.

Arent you glad they arent the fookin Beatles! Anyway wots so fookin great about the Beatles, basically the Beatles would struggle to make a half[ i can`t stand em] decent boxed set, unless its 6ft long and made on wood.

The Beatles were an analogy for a band with a career littered with commercially viable hits suited ideally to a boxset. God no i didnt mean them litereally!!!!!

Like Old Blue said, the difference between "Retro" and "Recycle" is enough to upset a whole mess of people here. How about a moratorium on threads relating to the obvious suckiness, if so that we don't get bogged down in it? Let's remember New Order the way they should be, Barney and Hooky riding a tandem bicycle and laughing gayly as the cruise through the park, while Steve licks his giant lolly-pop and looks adorable in his little sailor outfit?.......
