Fine Time

I agree with everything New Order does...Everything...But,...Putting "Fine Time" on their greatest hits album "Best of New Order." Does anyone else agree that this son just isn't up to par???? I also think this song takes away from the feeling of Technique. I would love to know if anyone has an interview with Bernard or the band on the song. Thanks so much. -Dan

I agree. I hate Fine Time. It's totally worthless.

AJ - saw the same show and had the same reaction when I realised that Fine Time 'WAS' the song in the background when I first heard it proper.

I did detest the song when it first 'emerged' - but, when you look back - and put the song in its appropriate context i.e. Ibiza 1987/88 - it kind of makes sense. I would never think to myself, okay lets get Fine Time out and 'really listen' to it in the same way I would for, for example, 'This Time of Night'. But, drop an 'E', get hammered, dance around THEN put 'Fine Time' on, well, that's a different story.

Patty, 'Fine Time' worthless? - I don't know, I think perhaps its worth something. Okay not a great song, instead, a nice piece of nostalgia. Maybe you have to have lived through the Ibiza experience or gone to a couple of UK clubs at the time to appreciate where they're coming from. That's not meant to be patronising, but hopefully you know what I mean. After all, NO did get REALLY into dance music, and 'Fine Time' was their homage. Let them have their little deviance Patsy, whilst we listen to Turn My Feet with a bowl of chips.

... also, Aj's right - the Hooky line at the end IS a defining NO moment. I'd put the song on for that alone.

Huntsy, I thought Mr. Disco was their homage to dance music. Well, it's true, I've never been to Ibiza, certainly not in 1989. I may have slightly overstated the case on Fine Time. I guess I'd probably rather listen to Fine Time than the latest from P. Diddy.

P. Diddy? - you know, if I had a nickname of Puff Daddy, I don't thing I'd wish to swap it with P. Diddy? - sounds like someone who consistently needs the toilet (or the restroom as you say in the states!).

Patsy, you have created an interesting slant on the Fine Time subject here... Mr. Disco was NEVER an outright dance song (hopefully, AJ will back me up on this) in the same way FT was. If you like, Fine Time is hardcore dance (well, as close as you can get with NO to outright dance) and Mr. Disco is a NO song done with a slight beaty/dance way. Big difference.

Think any 'The Backstreet Boys' song being fully fledged dance music... no, its not, its a song using synth/dance technology.

Well, Huntsy, I dislike Fine Time so much that I always skip it when I hear the opening. I definitely for sure never heard Fine Time in a club. I can understand what you're saying about Mr. Disco though, and I didn't mean to suggest that Mr. Disco was really a dance song. I suspect you are really not that familiar with The Backstreet Boys' oeuvre, Huntsy. Most of their stuff to my ears has nothing whatever to do with dance, with exceptions for things like Backstreet's Back. I confess I do rather like The Backstreet Boys (but not NSYNC, except for Bye, Bye, Bye, and a couple of other things on No Strings Attached that didn't generate videos).

Truth be told Pat, I think that song by the boys that goes 'You are, my fire, my one, desire' and so on brings a tear to my eye. I dig the guitar intro and melody. I thnik the video has them in an airplane hangar with oversized clothing on. In the background several groups of 9 year olds are holding up banners saying 'Kenneth, Roger, Alan' and the other one with a slight bit of stuble on his nose.

I Want It That Way, Huntsy. A truly great song. As is the one mentioned by SB. They were on MTV's TRL a couple of years ago and sang that one, I believe, a cappella, and it was quite tear inducing.

I'm not that much into Fine Time either but, in the same time, I think it's really interesting how it is placed on Technique, just before songs like All The Way and Loveless.

You know, you begin to think "what the heck is that" (let's not forhet it was the 1st single from Technique), is the whole album gonna be like that ? And then, you have All The Way and you get some sense of relief...

Not as funny Geoff, or quite as strange I 'reckon, than the recent decision by Mr. Peter Hook to wear a 'hooded top' through several recent live performances.

Picture 'The Hook' wearing a mod/punk'esque shirt and tie in the 70's (a leader, amongst men)... envisage him now, in a mock-teenage gangster type outfit some of our more fearful children would wear when stealing various cars parked quite harmlessly around our world. Poor Mr. Hook, neither old, nor young.

AJ - Side A was slightly tainted by the use of Fine Time. I fear you are going to upset people by dissing All The Way, Guilty Partner and Loveless etc.

Always thought the album version of Round & Round was a bit 'weedy'. The single version on the other hand rocks like no other. IMHO the best thing the Order have ever done

Interesting - I always thought the 'Technique' Round & Round kicked like a mule, whereas the single release sounded like a watered down bamboo shoot.

Why take the glorious hard edge off a belter? - Why cut the beautiful arpeggio bits off the end? - Why call it Round & Round instead of Pictures on the Nose of a Whale?

It's been a while since I listened to ANY version of R&R; maybe I should give it another chance.

All the Way, Love Less and Guilty Partner getting the short stick from AJ? I saw somewhere else Allen's most desired live additions "Ceremony" (of course) "Dreams Never End"? and what else? What would you (allen) like to see added from Technique? Why did Technique get the shaft on the recent tour? Can you tell their tour manager to have them cut Blue Monday and Bizarre Love Triangle from the set?
