...to add further. I think Blue Monday '88 exists for two reasons.

One, Quincy Jones absolutely loved the original, and since Qwest had gained the rights to NO's catalog for US distribution, he wanted to try his hand at a remix, and from that create a shortened version to try and gain radio traction (which worked somewhat. It hit the Billboard Hot 100 at #68, and went to #1 on the dance chart).

Two, they finally had the budget to do a really great video, and MTV wasn't likely to start playing a new video for a 5-year old song. Spruced-up version = "new" in the eyes of MTV, and therefore acceptable.

Quincy didn't actually do the remix as far as I understand. He handed it to John "Tokes" Potoker (well known for Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer 12").

Yeah, by Item all the singles (except Subculture) had at least one vid - Turn had three, and didn't get any further than 'Singles (7" edit)'... I could argue the case for Video 586 or Someone Like You. Or I could shut the fuck up. The words It and Milking spring to mind.

I'm pretty sure Thieves Like Us never had a video.Certainly not at the time and i don't think one has been made for it in more recent years.Maybe they should do one for that to complete the videos if they're in the business of making new films for old songs.I was thinking there had never been one for Ceremony but apparently they did one for the Item DVD though i can't for the life of me remember it.I remember the new Temptation vid (the 'Temptation of Victoria' i think it was called?) that's on that DVD but would have to dig the disc out to remind what the Ceremony one is all about.

You're fucking quick, in the words of my wife. Yeah, I just remembered and was about to edit the post. There's Murder too. I like to think of TOTP as the Thieves vid. I also like to think about the Spice Girls in the nude (or with my clothes on).

It's also interesting that until the mid 80s, not every single had a vid - then they all did, even ones they weren't around to promote, like 1963-95, hence the ''arty'' approach. It's an interesting reflection (in both senses) on how crucial the visual aspect has become. As Hooky said in 89, it's unfortunate how people tend to remember images over how the track originally made you feel. Michael Jackson and Madonna were important in that respect. It's like you hear and track and think, Oh yeah, that's the one where Katy Perry looks fairly fuckworthy in a forest. My dad keeps lecturing me about my Madonna obsession. I said, Papa don't preach.

I know that art is very subjective, but in the case of this video, I really just don't get it.

It's a weird thing 'art', isn't it? If you commission an artist to produce something like this (a video, a short film, an LP sleeve etc.), you're really giving them carte blanche to do whatever they want, no questions asked (unless you give them a certain remit). It's not like asking someone to fit a new shower in your bathroom; there's no wrong way to 'make art', is there? If you don't like the finished product, it could be said that 'you just don't get what the artist was trying to achieve', 'you're misinterpreting it' etc.

Now I'm not saying that the director has half-arsed this video (he/she may well have spent a long time planning this in fine detail), but it seems to me that it would be very easy to come up with the idea of this in a very short space of time.

"Get a girl. Make her dance spasmodically whilst filming her. Throw in a slight bit of 80s styling (after all, the song's from that era). And, Hey Presto, instant video..."

I don't want to criticise the director too much here. He/She may have put their heart and soul into this, after all. But, to me, it all appears to be a little lazy and lacks any real imagination.

But, that's just me. We are all different, and I'm sure others may like it. Not for me though.

Oh, and thinking of other singles without videos, 'Procession' is one. Shamberg did do one for 'Everything's Gone Green', but not for its partner. Maybe he thought that 'Procession' was a b-side (seen as if it was 'relegated' to that status on 'Substance 1987').

Take a song that came out fucking years ago, and give it to someone who's never had fuck all to do with it to impose some arty farty bollocks that have even less to do with it. 'Official'? That just means they get credito and publicity for doing the least fuck all of all. They probably ain't even watched it.

Re Fotz (fucking quote function's arsed it up again), Ceremony is the one with an Oriental guy in a box and then out of a box, used for the cover. Re Orange, I'd say the EGG vid counts for EGG/Prosexion. I like to meditate after sex. Just thinking outside the box. As I said, I view these things with my tongue in my other cheek cos they have fuck all to do with the period and actual band. They don't really count and are a poor substitute for newbies. I've always wondered why the original Blue Monday was never compiled after the song was so ubermilked and successful, and they had fucking shitloads of possibilties. Someone on these forums suggested it was cos of the dodgy military imagery, but I'm not convinced. Maybe it was just too clunky. I guess we'll never know.

Without the involvement of Michael Shamberg, the videos became a bit more like product. There have been some decent ones since (I like Restless, Singularity and both vid's for Tutti Frutti), but there have been far too many clunkers (PotHL, most of the Joy Division stuff, AoC. I think the Be a Rebel one is ok).

The video for Ceremony created for A Collection/Item is a homeless Asian man in the subway. A still image was used for the cover of the DVD.

I also tend of think of the TOPT appearance for Thieves Like Us as the video.

The video for Shellshock is a collage of images from Pumped Full Of Drugs and the shoot for The Perfect Kiss. If they'd done a standard movie tie-in video using scenes from Pretty In Pink they might have scored a Top 40 hit over here.

The official video for EGG was done in February 2007. More stock footage.

I think Murder is retroactively considered a single, even though Factory proper didn't put it out. It came out on Benelux and was only available as an import. I'm not sure how you'd make a video for that without using 2001: A Space Odyssey and Caligula.

I'm not bothered by these new videos. Adding a visual element to the song to goose streaming revenue for the band isn't a bad thing. I'm sure they're done on a tight budget.

Very true.

Although I’m always happy for the band to generate revenue in any way they can (within reason), I’m not really a fan of these ‘new videos for old songs’. Although the ’lyric’ videos for ‘Blue Monday’ and the very recent ‘Closer’ tracks aren’t that imaginative, I think I prefer that approach to the ‘reimagined’’Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘AoC’ videos.

Well it was included on the Substance CD, which omitted a bunch of Bsides, including a 'proper' one (Mesh). Again, I'm not sure what kinda vid the could make, and I'd have the usual reservations, especially at this stage. Confusion was a tacky vid, but at least it caught a moment in the band's actual development. These things are pretty surplus. I don't give a fuck about them getting money, either. Given the fact their output makes J D Salinger look like the Beatles, they're fucking lucky to have the yachts and tanks.

Well TikTok is neither here nor there, as far as I can see.

I think that's a clip from Jimmy Fallon's talk show. Jimmy's "cards" have been covered over by NO sleeves (by a clever computer person) and the original music has been overdubbed with NO tracks.

So a NO fan has hijacked the original clip. My only complaint is that the AOC sound clip is too short.

On a side note, NO have officially joined TikTok recently, although I'd be surprised if the band members know much about it.

I was a bit disappointed that he regrets his ‘1980s excess’ though. I think the four of them (well, not really Gillian) filling up with booze and drugs probably contributed heavily to the art they created.

I’m guessing his 1980s was far more fun than mine.

And it wasn't just the 1980's but not sure if their road of excess lead to the palace of wisdom though.

Without being puritanical, it probably lead to Gretton's and Wilson's early deaths, several marriage and family break ups, reckless business decisions (Fac & Hac), unprofessional live performances (ok it was funny at the time). It's the strangest business when you're given as much drink as you want before performing then paid as well.

I'm trying to remember which musician said he'd never seen so many drugs as back stage at New Order (USA tours). Lemmy?
