I think that was 1989, The Monsters Of Alternative Rock: PIL, New Order, Sugarpubes. My girlfriend's uncle was the sound engineer. Not the shit one. It always cracks me up how New Order go on about how many drugs they took and how many awesome influences they cite - then they come up with shite like Liar.

I am fucking hilarious. And the people who disagree are always people who'd rather have their eyes gouged out than get up on stage themselves. 1989 was an awesome year for alternative music. Top albums from PIL, New Order, Sugarpubes, Siouxsie, Depeche and the Cure. And in the mainstrean, Macca, whose solo career is more up and down than my mother outside a church, finally hit it with Flowers in the Dirt and his first worldwide tour in a decade. What more do you want, apart from a Spice Girl and a shower attachment?

Agreed. It’s definitely ‘stems’.

There’s one remix (can’t remember which one) where that bit is really clear and it also sounds like ‘disarrangement’ to me.

Also, listening to that remix, I'm starting to wonder if the line that I always thought was 'a halo that covers my eyes' is actually 'a halo that colours my eyes'. Both lyrics would fit; one blocking his view, the other either skewing the image or making his eyes appear different.

Could I have been wrong all these years?

Just editing this post to state how much I bloody love this track. It still sounds modern, fresh and just damn awesome. One of the band's very best. Would love them to start performing it live again.

In this live version, it almost sounds like 'spreads'. Well, to me it does, at least. Probably another example of Bernard changing lyrics on a whim.

But, yeah, I'm sure the studio version is 'stems', and I'm 99% sure it's 'disarrangement' rather than 'estrangement' (based on the Buttrich mix, which is much clearer).

Where they got 'sprung' from is anyone's guess though. I reckon they, rather than mishearing the word, just made a mistake when typing in the text. They meant to type 'stems' but ended up copying the word 'sprung' from the previous line ('Confusion sprung up from devotion').
