NewOrder Cult Classics

What do you consider to be 'cult' new order classics?

I dont so much mean their big guns such as Temptation and Regret but for example 1963(for the subject matter) and True Faith(for the video) RTS(cause it despite it all it WILL still be debated about in years to come!)

MTO is one such track I'd missed out on over the years. I could imagine if it was ever on somewhere I would have instantly recognised it (The lyrics would have been a bit of a give away) as New Order and it would have bugged me not knowing what it was. If you haven't stumbled across it yet, it's on-line here.

"Lonesome Tonight". I don't know why they "wasted" it as a unthankful b-side...

I have alsways thought "Lets Go" is classic NO. Heavy bass, aggressive drums, a beautiful keyboard bit in the middle and typical Barney lyrics. A gem.

Everythings's Gone Green's pure and classic cult New Order. It's the breaking point between the 'dark' JD-years and the more dancey stuff NO made in the years after. It sounds very inspired (what did they take that made everything go green?). A many layered psychedelic masterpiece and still one of my favorites.

You think thats's funny my wife was a Durranie and used to wait outside their houses in Brum to get a glimpse!! Must confess to seeing them at Villa Park in 1983 :o

Everythings Gone Green, its a dance song, its a new wave anthem, its out there slamming, it oozes aggression and passion. The first time I heard it in a club was in 1983 in Downtown Saturdays an aptly named dance club that was situated in The Old Town in Hastings, E. Sussex.

Yes "Hurt" gets my vote(glad im not the only one singing its praises) again. A top dance tune with a dark side. You love it really.

I've always had a soft spot for 'Murder'...that really is the single that never was! It's nothing like the other stuff they were doing at the time and the samples from 2001 A Space Oddessy make it pretty spooky.

Lonesome Tonight here as well. I first played that rather than Thieves when I bought the single by accident.

this one is a tough call. I'm gonna say "everythings gone green" because it's genius, and I'm going to go with "shell shock" because I love it and it seems to be forgotten by many.

i am frequently stepping up with praise for Vicious Streak...i cannot believe some people will bad mouth Vicious Streak and Someone Like You but praise Slow Jam and Rock the Shack...so SLY has a cheesy chorus...the music is Phenomenal...Vicious Streak is tied for second on my list of favorite Get Ready tracks and would easily make the top 10 all time favorite.

You'll have to fill me in on this anecdote, but I'm with everyone who mentioned "The Village": quite apart from the fact that it's glorious, just listen to that manic sequenced bassline: 'acid house' years before anyone else thought of it. And "Face Up" gets my vote (along with AOC) for the most-wanted-back-in-the-set-when-they-next-tour....

What about Senses?...

To be fair to John McCready a fair few of the suggestions here are on Disc 2 of Retro.

It's the beauty of New Order thouigh isn't it? The policy of having singles and albums as separate entities means there are just so damn many cult classics.

its a great song. actually the first song that made me get into New order.

i read in an interview that they came out of the studio in the morning after recording it and the greenery impressed them outside... drugs probably were involved, but that goes without saying.

5-8-6, deffo. as well as being my fave NO toon, it always gets overshadowed by blue monday cos of the evolution thingy. and those lyrics - barney must have been pretty mad at someone the day he wrote them!!! the peel session version has the edge.

Woohoo - I think pretty much the whole 1981-1982 album is a cult classic. Perfect in every way. Also, I would put Lonesome Tonight on that list. I would love to see them update Hurt just a little bit and start playing it live again.

For me, its almost the entire "Brotherhood" album. I can't really put my finger on it, and there's not many songs on there that I would say 'this is my favorite New Order song,' but the album as a whole is brilliant.. its my top pick in terms of NO's back catalogue.

Obviously have to agree with Dream Attack, Lonesome Tonight, Leave Me Alone (my fav. song ever), etc.

I also noticed nobody mentioned Mesh. (the real version from the FACTUS81-82 12") I recently taped in on cassette off of the vinyl so I could listen to it some more. It's got great riffing and Barney's singing is pretty good in it, which was asking for kindof alot back then =)

yes on Close Range...very good...in fact, i love the new sound on Get Ready...i can't wait for the next record...maybe we'll get lucky and they'll have a single ready for next fall...

Isn't Turn the Heater On a cover? I thought I remember reading somewhere that it was a fav of Ian's and that they recorded it as a tribute?

Thee might not want to release it due to:

1. Paying royalties or
2. Kinda bizarre to rerecord and release a cover song

"Brutal" was nice to hear at the time when I first heard that NO put out a new song for the first time in years. Slightly surprised that it never turned up on Get Ready, but that's the sort of thing they do. "1963" is just beautiful and haunting...I will forever like the original version better than the "Best Of" version.

I actually think Close Range will become a cult classic in years to come and Vicious Streak DEFINATLY will.

Crystal is already a classic but is too mainstream to be regarded as a cult track imo
