I am kind of a newbie towards New Order music. I must say I like them alot. I currently own the album Substance and Technique.
But I was wondering if I should blind buy Joy Divisions two albums? Is Joy Division at all similiar to New Order in terms of music? I know JD wasn't really synth or dance/pop kind of music but is there an element in JD's music that is clearly present in New Order that makes JD worth listening to considering I like New Order?
Yes, definitly.
New Order, in my view, still has the essence of what made Joy Division what it was, especially if you listen to Closer. Melodic songs, great lyrics, harsh guitars, punk attitude, only more rock and less pop that New Order are and with different lyric style because of Ian Curtis, the former leader/singer of the band.
I definitly recommend you buy their stuff, but you might also want to buy Get Ready and Low Life from New Order! :)

The Album "Closer" Fact25 is one of the best albums ever made in my opinion. Dont even think of not buying them Just do it......................................................................................................................

Let me just warn you that when you buy your first Joy Division album / compilation, you will probably hate it and stick in back in your CD collection and try to forget about it. Then, a few days, weeks, or even months later, you'll listen to it and you'll slowly start to love it. Ian's voice does take some getting used to.
I agree with you Monkey in a Bubblegum, at the very first I hated JD, it was so raw and desolate.
What I would do if I were Nikos is to buy PC&L, Substance and even Movement first and then approach Closer with caution and reverence in the knowledge that it is probably the most beautiful thing a laser has touched since Cameron Diaz removed his tatoo.
Ask the Huntsman how Closer should be enjoyed, he has explained it in a previous thread.
Definatly agree JoyDivision is quite challenging at first,
I still find it can be quite hard work listening to some of their material although always a rewarding experience :D
As was mentioned Curtis's voice takes some getting used to but is disturbingly hypnotic...
There is no "what's Joy Division like". Joy Division (and New Order) were/are unique! They're like the brothers you never had, the friends you always missed. There's no easy way in, but a harder way out. Let them grow on you, take your time, take the risk...it'll be worth it! cheers.

New Order is more of a pop band, while Joy Division is the best rock band ever.
Before i heard Joy Division, i thought that all 70's music was disco. Joy Division's music is heavy... and very depressing. New Order's is a lot more upbeat and... happier.
You won't hear such beautiful lyrics anywhere else on the planet. Ian Curtis was a master wordsmith who basically had New Order for his backing band, and boy did they produce some excellent music.
Joy Division are essential to any record collection. get the box set heart And Soul, it's got the two albums plus a whole load of stuff (the absence of original artwork for both albums is a negative, but it's great nonetheless)

Hmm, if you're going to start to dive into Joy Division, go with their version of "Substance" first. As great as the box set is, it can be a bit over whelming with all the demos and live tracks.
The best way to describe Joy Division would be like putting punk rock, new wave, and dare I say "goth" into a blender and serving it the rainiest day possible. It's very sad, very Nihilistic, and very insightful. Honestly, I think they should be a warning lable on their albums, it has that much of an effect on you.
But that's all part of the JD-NO experience. First you get into New Order, then Joy Division. After obsessing over them, you'll be sitting on your computer staring at eBay for hours trying to hunt down all the side projects.
Still, most music collectors are very obsessive compulsive people, so take caution before getting into Joy Division. The more you find out about Ian Curtis, it's like the more he and his visions become a part of you.

You have much to learn.
Best advice: Substance got me into JD. A nice blend of everything they did, punk, all out rock,synthpop/rock.
The songs are just much easier to listen to and represent pretty much everything they can do. Then try Unknown Pleasures, Closer, etc.
As said before, Joy Division is one of the best rock bands of all time. nuff said.

Is this a rule? That wasn't my case, I got into Joy Division first. It took some years for me to fully appreciate New Order. In 1988 I refused to see New Order live in my hometown (4 gigs in a row!) because "true Joy Division fans don't like New Order".
You do stupid things when you are eighteen. 
Joy Division are quite a heavy band, both lyrically & music wise. Ian's voice also adds to the feel and mood of their songs....but like 'Martin Zero' said.....they were a dance band with gothic overtones....and i agree. New Order are in my veiw....a natrual progression from 'Joy Division' Pity i never got to see em.

doncha just hate birds of prey
nah, go with permanent. it's got a sample from all of their relevent releases, you can't go wrong. that was my first JD cd, and although substance and still are better in terms of rarities and interest for more experienced fans...permanent will include all the favourites. it's the best for the beginner cuz if you turn out to be one of those fans who only likes them casuaully, then the hits are all you need.
and if you become a bigger fan and end up buying nearly everything they've released (like i did), then permanent is a pretty disposable cd where you can sell to some record store for 6 dollars.
either way, permanent is the way to go for beginners. i can speak pretty well for ya cuz i've only been a JD/NO fan for a little over a year, i know what it's like to be a cautious JD listener.
Never did me ANY harm listening to them since 1978/9.Don't get the JAPANEASE STILL first cos it is hard to make out all the words in the lyric sheets....:D UNKNOWN PLEASURES FACD 10 is a good place to start though .....and hope you enjoy the EXPERIENCE of a lifetime.
Well, I'd never get rid of my copy of "Permenant". It's the only CD that has the Pennine version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart". So it's still worth keeping in my opinion.
Speaking of the Japanese version of "Still", I bought that earlier this year. I don't know why since I already own the US edition, it was just one of those complusive things. I found the lyrics booklet to be quite funny myself. There's a line from "Something Must Break" that says "Tall Major Toms won't set me free" instead of "Torments yet calms, won't set me free." I was laughing my ass off.
I dunno if Joy Division make you depressed...but if your feeling down in the 1st place i wouldnt listen to them, its hardly gonna make u feel better (and indeed, probobly a lot worse). but then i dont fink all joy divsion's music is very doomy and gloomy, i would have to say Digital and Disorder are actually quite happy, and transmission is for that matter.But one listen of closer to someone who is already depressed would surely tip them in2 sucide?
