New Order Oddities (or New Orderties, if you like)

This is an archived legacy thread. Replies are closed, but the discussion is preserved.

Rather than make a separate thread for all the things I was thinking of querying tonight (like my Confusion thread), I thought it might be a good idea to make a dedicated thread to add various choice items to talk about and discuss.

From 7" promos to freebie flexis. Flicker books to rulers. Lewie busts to paperweights.

So, onto my first item.

Talking of flexis, here's one that most people probably don't know about.

Bizz Magazine Flexi

https://www.discogs.com/New-Order-Blue-Monday-1988/release/1776158

This was given away with a Brazilian magazine called (you guessed it) 'Bizz'.

Here's the issue in question (I think, see below), along with images:

http://m-80rockbands.blogspot.com/2010/09/1988-new-order-revista-poster-bizz.html

Anyone speak Portuguese?

As I mentioned above, I think it was this issue, but it may have been this one (as the cover seems familiar):

https://issuu.com/lucascorreaviegas/docs/revista\_bizz\_\_035\_-\_new\_order\_\_junho\_1988\_

As with a lot of my stuff, both the cuttings from the magazine and the actual flexi are in storage at my mum's. However, I'm currently involved in scanning all my hundreds (possibly thousands! [:eek] ) of cuttings. I do a little bit each time I go there. I'll get around to it eventually, but I'm up to 1983, so have a number of years to go to get to '88.

If I had to guess though, I'm pretty sure it's the top link (the cover with the band at The Roxy).

Onto the remix. I haven't played it for years, but as far as I can tell, it's exclusive to this release. I noted it on my list back in the early 90s as 'Blue Monday 1988 ('Bizz' Magazine Edit)', so it appears that it's a mix of the '88 version (which figures, based on the release date). I have a logged time of 3:20, so quite a bit shorter than the standard 1988 7".

I really can't remember anything about it, though. It might just be an early fade. My use of the term 'edit' seems to point to that, rather than a unique mix.

I'm pretty sure that I picked this up at one of those massive record fairs they used to have at the Birmingham NEC, two or three times a year.

I used to go there with David Smith from 'Paradise' fanzine (remember that?), as we were good friends. We used to have a little bit of an unwritten competition; who could find the best stuff. It was pretty much an 'on your marks' type thing. Doors would open and we would both try to head for certain sellers that were always there and were practically guaranteed to have some interesting items.

Some times I would walk out the victor but, more often than not it seemed, David would be the (unspoken) champion.

I remember feeling pleased I got this magazine, as it seemed pretty exclusive at the time (especially before we had internet shopping). Realistically speaking, I guess there's probably thousands of the damn things, given the vast size of Brazil.

If anyone knows which of the two magazines the flexi came with, please let me know. Even better, if anyone has a rip of the (dodgy, flexible) vinyl, please let me know.

OK, on to my second item.

https://www.discogs.com/NewOrder-Regret/release/175455

This is a 2x12" promo of 'Regret'.

I don't think I realised this at the time, but it actually contains an extended version of the (frankly horrible) Sabres Fast 'n' Throb mix. The version on the standard 12" runs to 12:11, whilst this one draws it even longer (groan!) to 13:38.

Again, I haven't got a rip of this, so would appreciate a copy if anyone has it (although, as stated, I'm less than thrilled with the remix).

I have an (vaguely) interesting tale as to how I got hold of this.

This is one of the only times I've ever won anything. I entered a competition in the NME. I can't remember what the competition was but suspect it was one of those 'answer an easy multi-choice question and mail in your address' types.

Anyway, although I bought NME every week in those days, I never noticed anything in the paper listing winners. Indeed, I never heard back from the NME with a 'Congratulations. You've won!' message.

All that happened was, literally months later, a parcel turned up on my doorstep. There was no markings either on the package or inside to say where it had come from. There wasn't even a compliment slip stating 'NME' etc. In fact, at first, I couldn't work out where it had come from and why it had been sent to me.

Eventually the penny dropped. As I say, it must've been 6 months at least since I entered the competition.

OK, final item for tonight.

As well as the 2x12" mentioned, my prize also included the following promo CD, which I was far more pleased with:

https://www.discogs.com/NewOrder-A-NewOrder-Sampler/release/796620

I thought this was really exclusive at the time (again, pre-internet). Now it seems you can pick them up fairly cheaply.

Not the best New Order competition to win. In the 26/11/88 issue of 'NME", there was a chance to win Barney's guitar, which would've been a much better prize to have got.

(Incidentally, that particular competition mentioned that the guitar on offer was Bernard's black 1959 Gibson Les Paul Special. However, the accompanying image showed him playing his Gibson ES335, a guitar he was still using at Reading the following year. Also, as far as I know, I think the only other Gibsons Bernard played was his SG or his Les Paul Junior. I'm guessing it was the latter they were referring to, as he never seemed to play it in the late 80s. Also, I think the Special and Juniors were very similar.)

good story, i've never entered a competition, and therefore have never won anything.

i don't have the brazilian flexi, but its cheap enough to find, if they don't gauge the shipping. one guy on discogs realised that, but i'm sure the rest would, if i asked them about shipping costs.

i also have the other cd promo you mentioned, just for completeness.

i have the regret 2x12 promo too.

but first bought the japanese republic, which has the two extra mixes (the long one is editted): https://www.discogs.com/NewOrder-Republic/release/831891

and the french fnac promo: https://www.discogs.com/New-Order-Regret-The-Weatherall-Mixes/release/146228

and of course, there was a shorter edit on the 'retro' boxset.

anyways, i liked techno music, so both mixes were pretty good to me.

i have already ripped every vinyl track, and promo i have for remix projects, but i will have to find the files.

its just easier to use the CD rips, and add on the extra bit at the end, which is what i did for better quality.

I have it, but can't rip it... I don't own a turntable for ages now. Plus, I always thought it was the regular 1988 7" anyway

I also have those magazines... they're not the one that came with the flexi, but they're pretty nice. My sister used to have a subscription

I had no idea that the Japanese variant had these extra two tracks. I should check Discogs more often.

negative1 wrote:

This looks a nice item. I'm quite tempted, as I do have a lot of CD promos, especially from the 'Republic' era. Cheapest price is £36 on Discogs, which is a bit steep, especially as I'm not that keen on the mixes.

Excellent! Thanks!

Wow! Well, there you go. My Swiss cheese memory is to blame. I obviously knew at the time that the flexi was on a separate magazine, but had forgotten that. I'm 100% sure I bought it attached to a magazine, so can only assume that, in my mind, I've merged the magazine with the flexi with one of the other magazines. I've definitely got one of the magazines, and may have the second.

Really nice to see the images of the flexi attached to the magazine. Many thanks for that.

As regards the mix, I'm pretty sure it is an edit. At least my 18 year old self logged it as a shorter edit.

Can't contribute much to this, the only couple oddities off the top of my head i own are the Tonpress Polish 7" with BM and TLU.Is that regarded as an oddity though? Maybe not.And one copy of the Benelux TPK 7".I have a Get Ready fold out card promo thing that i got from somewhere when the album was released.Round & Round micro CD.Nothing really rare though.

Don't worry about rarity. Just post whatever takes your fancy.

As regards the Tonpress Blue Monday, does that contain an edited version of the song, or is it still the 7:29 version, but played at 33rpm?

I have something similar to your 'Get Ready' promo card. I can't remember if it folds out or not, but got it whilst standing in the queue waiting to get into the Liverpool Olympia gig in 2001.

^ Yep the Tonpress 7” has the standard versions of BM and TLU , so as they’re crammed onto a 7” the sound ain’t the best! Think I only ever played it once.

The Get Ready thing is a foldout card with images from the album sleeve and maybe one or two others , can’t remember for sure now .

The rare vinyl ones in my collection I can think of is the orange vinyl in order compilation.

https://www.discogs.com/New-Order-In-Order/release/862776

The other one and most treasured one is the limited substance gatefold (factory employees one)

https://www.discogs.com/New-Order-The-Gatefold-Substance/release/807050

Other ones is the shiny metallic Brotherhood Also original pressings of get ready and republic, WFTSC which seem quite sort after. Vinyl of video 586 on touched NOMC15 gatefold Xmas flexi Mark Reeder 7” mix given with Electronic music mag

Basically if it’s on vinyl and it’s new order I’ll have it or want it

CD wise the 3” R&R and squishy orange thing for republic are the only slightly rare ones I can think of

Never seen that orange vinyl 'In Order'. That's a bloody nice item.

I'd love to own the Gatefold Substance. One of these days...

I have that Touch 'Video 586' 12". Mine came with a postcard, if I remember correctly. I'm guessing it's ticked away in the sleeve. I also have the CD release of it. The original digipack version (apparently Touch released a jewel case variant a year or so later). I recall ringing up Touch on a payphone at my workplace and speaking to a guy who appeared to be a fan. Might have even been Jon Wozencroft.

I have both of those R&R & Republic CDs. Love both of them. Very cool indeed.

A couple of other cool CDs spring to mind. Those two CDVs that were released for True Faith and Blue Monday 1988:

https://www.discogs.com/New-Order-True-Faith/release/462979 https://www.discogs.com/NewOrder-Blue-Monday-1988/release/882345

When I first saw them in HMV Manchester, I snapped up True Faith immediately, but put off buying Blue Monday 1988. They were quite pricey, if I recall correctly (probably £10 each).

I chose True Faith based mainly on finally being able to have the 12" Remix on CD and also for 'Evil Dust' (which I hadn't clue what the Hell it was until I played it). Of course, I was also pleased that the '7" version' labelled as being on the disc was actually an exclusive edit of the remix (although I hated the edited chorus).

The Blue Monday 1988 disc looked fairly unremarkable to me, with all the audio tracks appearing to be exactly the same as the standard CD single. However, when I finally got around to purchasing it months later, I was pleased to hear that 'Beach Buggy 12"' was actually the Dub version (only available previously on vinyl) and the 7" version was a different (and exclusive) mix.

I've bought quite a lot of New Order promo CDs over the years. I had a bit of a purge on getting some of the later ones two or three years ago (I'd got a bit jaded with New Order in the 00s, so gave quite a few of the releases a bit of a miss at the time).

Anyway, I went and bought the Guilt Is A Useless Emotion promo CD single off Discogs for €12:

https://www.discogs.com/New-Order-Guilt-Is-A-Useless-Emotion-Remixes/release/937116

When it arrived, upon examination, I noticed that it was a double disc tray. I lifted the tray to find this nestled under it; the Radio mixes:

https://www.discogs.com/New-Order-Guilt-Is-A-Useless-Emotion-Radio-Mixes/release/7270211

That was a bit of good fortune. Both releases for about £15 (inc. postage). I'm guessing the seller had possibly bought it, along with a load of other CDs, from a fan, but hadn't noticed that the fan had stuck both CDs in the same case.

It's rare I get lucky like that. It kind of makes up for all the other times I've been screwed over by sellers in the past.

Oh i do have that True Faith CDV now you mention it.Snapped it up somewhere in late 80s.Dug it just now and gave it a spin.I'd forgotten that there's that exclusive 7" mix of the Pettibone remix.I'd also forgotten the way the chorus is butchered and misses a couple of lines out and seems to jump from "My morning sun is the drug that brings me near" to "that my life would depend on the morning sun".The "To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear/I used to think that the day would never come" is chopped out! Still, nice to have.

Nice to hear Evil Dust again , hadn't given that a spin in years.I already had that mix of Angel Dust at the time when i bought the CDV so i was familiar with it.It was originally on a various artists compilation vinyl that was released in late 1986, a month or two after Brotherhood but which i later sold with a bunch of other stuff in the late 80s as i was trying to get some money together. I figured it was one of a number of records i didn't really need anymore. Can't for the life of me remember what the album was called now.Think i'd first become aware of it through Melody Maker or something. What was the name of that compilation album??

Edit: Found it. It was this album- Funky Alternatives. That's the one i originally bought not longer after Brotherhood as it had an exclusive mix of Angel Dust.Crikey, looking at the tracklist there's a few other gems on there also. Like Chris & Cosey's October Love Song - i do not remember that being on there! Thought i'd never heard that cute little tune until more recent years. How odd.

I never bought the Blue Monday 88 CDV.I saw it numerous times on sale back in the day but i just didn't bother, probably because i was never a massive fan of BM 88.I didn't know that there's an exclusive 7" mix on it however.

I'm not sure i'd been aware that Video 586 was available on 12".I bought the digi pack CD around 1997.I'm assuming then that the 22 minute track is split over the two sides of the 12" ??...... Either that or it's a one sided vinyl

have both the orange vinyl 'in order', and the CD, when there were plenty of both on ebay, the cd is much cheaper and easier to find now.

the original pressings of the albums aren't worth as much now, since they've all been re-released on heavy vinyl, which is when i picked up the latter ones.

have video - prime 586 on vinyl (no its not one sided, it has a joy division track on the b-side) and on cd.

New Order ‎– Video 5-8-6 Label: Touch ‎– Tone 7.1 Format: Vinyl, 12", 33 ⅓ RPM, 45 RPM, Single Country: UK Released: 15 Sep 1997 Genre: Electronic Style: Electro, Synth-pop Tracklist A –New Order Video 5-8-6 22:25 B –Joy Division As You Said 2:01 Total Time: 24:26

also, have parts 1, 2, 3 on the various tapes and cds:

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Touch-Sampler/release/242320 New Order Video 586 6:57

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Feature-Mist/release/308267 A2 –New Order Video 586 - 1 B4 –New Order Video 586 - 2

got the xmas flexi, and electronic sound mark reeder mix,

also, have the round and round singles all on vinyl, cd3, cd5, promos.

and the there are 2 republic vests, with different color ink on them.

there is the true faith 5 inch cdv, a US promo cd, and several later remixes of true faith promo cds, and vinyl also.

and have the blue monday cdv, the canadian CD5 with more mixes, the japanese CD3, and the UK cd5, and the vinyl versions, and promos too.

finally, i'm pretty sure i have 30-50 promo cd's from them US, UK, card sleeve, jewel boxes, slimline, but have to go through them at some point.

Speaking of 5-8-6 harder-to-finds, the Peel version also appeared on this 2012 vinyl release:

Which I recall was sort of released in a semi-official/grey area capacity until it promptly wasn't. I managed to grab one at the time.

Now a lot of collectors are chasing it and you can't trade it on Discogs.

Full Elegia there too.

Never seen this before. Thanks for posting.

Talking of ‘full length’ Elegia, apparently there’s an even longer version. Hooky mentioned having it on one of his weekly chats. He was apparently considering it for inclusion in the forthcoming Low Life set.

Yeah, that always irked me. I remember someone once saying it was edited to remove drug references but, if that was the case, they took out the wrong line. So certainly not true.

It just sounds really jarring when listened to. It’s a shame as, apart from that, it’s a nice and short compact remix.

I'm pretty selective with bootlegs.

For me, there's still romance in some of the classic 80s live gigs pressed on vinyl with offbeat original sleeves, underground style. They're often pretty rare and go for a lot of money. At the time this was the only way you got to hear these shows. I have a nice stash of these.

In the past decade, the price of pressing vinyl has dropped a lot. To the point where there are hundreds of new pressings of old shows and demos that hold no value for me. Feels a bit soulless.

Then you get recent releases like this Substance that come in a multitude of colours and have many buyers believing they're authorised. The eBay seller never lets on and charges a heap for them.

Yeah - those bootlegs were fantastic back in the 80s/90s. Although I didn't buy a lot of them, I just used to love finding them tucked away in racks at small record shops / record fairs. Was always tempted to buy them and succumbed occasionally.

Yep - it's an early fade. It starts to fade out just after Bernard starts his (vaguely incomprehensible) last vocal segment and finishes pretty much as soon as he delivers his last line.

Yeah - I have all three of these. I liked that 'Round & Round' edit at the time. Not because it was particularly special. Just because it felt 'exclusive'.

I love your signed 'Blue Monday-95' promo. Wish mine was the same. Sadly it isn't.

I've got the '20 Years' one, but my 'Let's Go' is just a one track version. Was there a two track one? I do love the one that I have, due to it being a picture CD. Wish it had a cover as well though.

There's actually a little bit of extra music between the first "chorus" (assuming those synth chords count as a chorus without any lyrics) and before the second "Why did you never speak my name...' verse. It's shortened on 'Low-life'

You're right! Well spotted, sir!

I wonder if there are other bits cut out of the Edit earlier in the mix; according to my iTunes, that 'lead in' to the second verse starts at 2:37 on the LP version and at 2:08 on the Edit, which seems to point to something missing earlier on in the Edit.

As you pointed out, the lead in to the second verse is shorter on the LP version (13 seconds, 2:37-2:50) compared to the Edit (25 seconds, 2:08-2:33).

If I was a cleverer man, I could do some sort of graphical analysis of the two tunes. But I'm a bit of a 'thickie', so I won't. [:)] If anyone else wants to give it a go, I'd be interested to see the results.

Seem to recall the single, slow, low synth notes right at the start play for a shorter time before Hooky's bass starts up on the Debut Magazine version. So the intro is shorter, but the music before verse two is longer, with the early fade making it shorter overall than the Low-life version

I was able to sync up the two and play them at the same time.

While the music bed is largely the same for both, the instrumental rough mix adds more guitar riffing where the vocals would start.

Also, it's obvious they edited together different takes, because the beat goes out of sync in a couple of sections of the instrumental mix, but then gets back in sync for other sections. The most obvious place is the guitar scrape into the full band. The instrumental take is not double-tracked, and runs a split second too long.

Oh, and the obvious faster fade.

Remembered I have this. Not of much interest but an official release if nothing else. Album called Like A Girl, I Want You To Keep Coming. One New Order track included - a live version of Sister Ray ( ok a cover version, not a NO song) recorded in Sao Paulo 1st Dec 1988. Bought the CD sometime around 1989 I think.

Thanks for doing this. I should mention though that we were talking about the ‘edit’ version that was on the 10” LP given away with ‘Debut’ magazine, issue 11:

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Debut-LP-Magazine-Issue-11/release/917525

rather than the ‘instrumental rough mix’ given away with the ‘Discreet Campaigns’ cassette magazine:

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Discreet-Campaigns/master/400971

Despite comments on that top Discogs link, the ‘edit’ version isn’t an instrumental, but a vocal version.

That being said, I hadn’t noticed the beat going out of sync. I’ll give the ‘instrumental rough mix’ another listen today and listen out for the bits you refer to. Thanks for the info..

Although I first heard about this LP whilst reading a Record Collector article in 1990-1, I only got hold of it about 2-3 years ago.

It’s a pretty intriguing little curiosity, with a distinctly odd choice for the New Order track. ‘Sister Ray’? If you wanted to include a track by the band, you’d think they’d have picked something a bit better known and more representative of their sound.

I will also say that I really hate both the cover art and the name of the compilation. It seems like they were trying to be ‘edgy’ and controversial.

Still, an interesting oddity.

You're still Out Of My League. I used to be a vinyl completist and only bought other formats if they had exclusives - so I didn't ''need'' the Regret CD but tracked down all the RIAD releases. I gave up years ago for practical reasons (storage, moving house etc), plus I was sick of London's oldie to newbie rate. I'm nowhere near as passionate as I used to be, and YouTube has the proverbiale kitchen sink. Didn't bother with the Redpubelick CD cos there was nothing on it except the (mediocre) album, which they'd already done to death. I got the Video 586 12" and yeah, It had As You Said on the Bside and a postcard of the same image as the Fart and Sole box shit, which came out at the same timeish. The CD just had the Aside. The funny part is I've never played it cos I didn't have a turntable and when I left the country I left it with my ''''family'''', so it's probably been chucked out. I only had the Featuremist edit and didn't hear the full version till the Be Music compilation a year ago. I read that Record Collector article too and assumed the Sister Ray was the One I had on the Demos, Outtakes and Rarities cassette, but it ain't. I'd rather have this than another Blue Monday mic but you're right, the title and cover are trying too hard. There was also an Oz's Live and Dangerous mix (not really a mix) on the New Order The Remix boot, and of course the BBC Radio 1 Live release.

Come to think (that's my brain in reverse), I also got the JD flexi through mail order, featuring the instrumental, which wasn't compiled till Tart and Hole, plus the 1990 Cumfusion 12". In fact I had pretty much all the vinyl from JD through those iffy off-shoots to Raise the Pisser, and it'd be worth about a Grand, especially after Factory went bust, but even if it hasn't been chucked out, poor condition has an enormous effective on value. I'd only spend the money on Special Brew and whores anyway. Then there was the Record Mirror Subculture mix, but without the actual mag, and again, it's in poor nick. I picked it up at the local flea market, with another freebie featuring the Per Shop Boys' In the Night. Arthur Baker transformed that track.

I love the fact that they couldn't even be arsed to complete the Happy One but still gave it THREE airings: Other Side of Midnight, Substance 89 and Palatine Lane. Then there was Let's Go, which they considered too weak for an album featuring Face Up, and then used for Salvation, 1963-95, US Best Of and the Brotherhood remaster. It's clear they put it on the Best Of not cos it is indeed worthy, but cos it was the closest they could get to a newbie - like Hellbent on Scrotal. It's the same mentality that puts unreleased tracks on Hits Compilations (DUH) or Move Over Miss L on The John Lennon Collection: hardly 'Plastic Ono Band' fodder but the bastards knew fans would be missing a five-year-old Bside.

this thread might end up costing a fortune, if people start buying things,

i'll take the blame.

but i do like when people point out things that i don't have, as long as they are relatively cheap.

the brotherhood box was kind of expensive, and i'm sure the other items brought up will set me back a lot too, but thats from me not knowing about them, or not having the funds to get the items when they came out.

a lot of them are promo items, which would have never been in most stores anyways.

or in foreign countries, and magazines, or stores... your mileage may vary.

i've taken out tons of cd's from card sleeves and put them in other cases, and with other cd's, it's driving me crazy trying to find them now.

especially with the 3 inch ones.

luckily i keep all the new order ones together, so i only have to go through 100 cd singles, or more to find something. i don't mix up electronic, revenge, new order, bernard sumner, etc. then it would be a real mess.

luckily i haven't lost an actual cd, i just can't find where i put them. ha ha.

now, with these posts, i'm forced to go back and dig them out.

Been meaning to ask about these for a while, so this thread is a good chance to. (You can see a slightly larger photo here.)

Retro signed

Picked them up years ago, on auction I think. The discs are CD-R promos for Retro, which themselves are not too uncommon or valuable.

But I've never seen signed inserts besides these ones I bought.

I'm no expert, but the signatures look pretty authentic?

Anyone know if these were part of a promotion or something?

The truth in that statement is that someone that collects 100% of everything from a single group, but only moderate amounts of releases from others is going to suffer from diminishing returns at some point. Unless you're listening to (or gazing at/caressing) it to the exclusion of others artists, you're probably overdoing it. Diversify.

i think it's a lot more fun collecting new order than listening also, because besides the boxsets, they really haven't put out anything worth listening to after brotherhood. (beyond an initial time or two)

YES, the singles, remixes, etc, etc. but that's still not much to get.

so, once you get the album tracks, if you're not interested in the singles or mixes, there really isnt much else to get.

if you do get the singles, b-sides, soundtracks, and miscallaneous projects, videos, that covers most of their output too.

it's all the crazy formats, foreign pressings, colored vinyl, record store tracks, boxes, and other things that make it fun.

i don't bother talking about the music anymore, unless its the demos, because there really isnt anything of note. not a whole was said about 'be a rebel', that hasn't been said before.

Pretty unremarkable. Rich Morel doesn't even have a copy of it anymore.

Promo mixes can be regarded as thus: the fewer times it appears across formats, the less interesting it is.*

I'm sure Warners only stuck it out there because they'd paid for it.

* The exception being Martin Buttrich's 2005 remix of Everything's Gone Green. It's my favorite New Order remix ever, and criminal that it never saw a commercial release.

Hmmm, I've got them listed as different on my spreadsheet, but can't remember where I got this information. Maybe they aren't and I just assumed they were several years ago.

They're on this release (linked to above by Jcp7):

Philip Steir's Re-Order Mix - Vocal Up (8:16) Philip Steir's Re-Order Mix - Video Edit (5:45)

Maybe they are just the first two tracks on here:

Philip Steir Edit (5:45) Philip Steir Re-Order Mix (8:15)

You're right, it's probably the same tracks. But why one of them is called "video edit"? AFAIK, no video were made in 2001.

2 2 likes

Yep - it's very perplexing. Maybe they were going to do a video, and just never got around to it.

I've never really been sure of the story for these remixes. Was there an intention for the band to properly release 'True Faith' again in 2001, and the idea got nixed (after the remixes had been commissioned)? If so, that could be the reason why a video edit was made, to promote the release on MTV / VH1 etc.

Anyway, I've struck those two off my list - I reckon they're bound to be the same as the standard two mixes.

Anyone heard the 'My Fear Of Dub Mix'? Any good?

Unfortunately no. Never found it on Soulseek.

perspexorange wrote: I've never really been sure of the story for these remixes.

It was done to raise their profile in the US, where their last official release had been The Best Of 6 years earlier. Get people dancing to them, thinking "oh hey, New Order" before rolling out the single for Crystal and the campaign for Get Ready.

I wouldn't be too bothered by the variations of names - they're just promo. Not intended for the public. Maybe the label thought they'd put together a video for it, but by that stage MTV had almost stopped playing videos and YouTube didn't exist. It would've ended up being one of those promo VHS mix tapes sent to clubs. It probably would've been re-edited footage from the original 1987 video, with bad early '00s effects added. Not worth the time or effort if DJs and record pools weren't jumping for the promo.

I never once heard it in a club. A friend who worked the counter at one of the local record stores saved their promo copy and gave it to me.

Don't forget, this is a business. They were on a major label. The band probably had very little input, apart from approving the mixes they liked. The label would've chosen the song, the remixers - pretty much everything. Most UK bands tend to shrug it off and let the Americans do whatever they think is best for the market over here.

Thanks. That certainly makes sense.

It just seems odd that they didn't officially release it, even as a limited edition. The only things that made it out (not counting that bonus track on 'Retro') were the various promos and they're rarer than rocking horse poo .

Seems a reasonable amount of cash to invest for very few people to ever get to hear the mixes.

I'm friends with Rich Morel. Trust me, he and Philip were not paid a lot. At best Warners would have considered New Order a niche band after 6 years without a release and 8 years after their last studio album. Republic only sold 382,000 copies here. The Best Of probably sold half of that. They only hit the Top 40 twice (True Faith, Regret), and they only toured a handful of dates in major markets. They had one new song on a soundtrack to a film that got panned, and it didn't gain any traction at radio.

I know we all have a fairly rosy view of the Factory years, but Warner Brothers is not Factory.

All totaled the label probably spent less that $2,000 for the mixes, pressing up vinyl and CD-Rs, and sending them out. That's nothing to a major label, and would have been considered part of the marketing budget for Get Ready.

Remember, Philip Steir had been a member of Consolidated, which was very much an underground band. Rich wasn't even in a band at that point, and had only done a few remixes (Pet Shop Boys, Deep Dish). We're not talking Oakenfold, Weatherall, Osborne, or whatever crap DJs were the highest paid remixers in 2001.

What I'm saying is, you need to be more cynical. :)

We approach the band as fans and can't understand why everything they release isn't revered and given the full Saville treatment, etc.

The label approaches the band as a commodity, and considers most of their output to be disposable because it's not competing with top 10 U.S. albums of 2001:

Beatles - 1 (over 2 million sales in 5 weeks) Shaggy Backstreet Boys Various Artists - Now 5 Limp Bizkit Linkin Park Staind Enya 'N Sync Nelly

Jesus Christ, popular music sucked.

Is the Saville Soundtrack considered an oddity? Possibly my favourite instrumental (heresy, I know)

You're right, of course.

I just think the 'release' (such as it was) was a bit half-arsed and it just makes you think, 'why bother?'.

I doubt more than a few hundred people have ever heard any of these mixes. And probably only just a handful back in 2001.

It wasn't intended for you. It wasn't a 'release.' It was promotional material, plain and simple.

It was a gamble in the American marketplace to see if they could goose the band's sales and to get people thinking about them before Get Ready was released.

I get that it wasn't for me.

But why such limited numbers? Surely, if so few people heard the mixes, there was very little chance that anyone was going to be 'thinking about' New Order.

IT WASN'T FOR THE PUBLIC. It was for DJs, who might play it, or might play something else like Blue Monday instead. You get the influencers thinking about New Order, then they play them in a club, or on college radio, or maybe one of their "hits" in select radio markets.

It wasn't a proper single release. I'm sure Warners had no expectation that lots of people were going to hear mixes the label paid a couple hundred bucks for.

It's advertising. It's awareness. It's something slightly more interesting than a print ad. For the U.S. market only.

You're overthinking it.

Crikey!

I'm not sure if this is passive aggressive, or just plain aggressive.

We're all friends here.

As I stated in my previous post, I realised that the release 'wasn't for me' (i.e. the general public). My point was that there seemed to be so few of these out there, that it didn't seem particularly effective - whatever the company's intention.

But it's fine. You answered my question with something that makes sense and I appreciate that. Thank you.

Dug out that Tonpress 7” of BM/TLU. Not that rare I guess. Picked it up at one of those record fairs at Birmingham NEC I think in late 90s. Don’t recall paying much for it. On the back of sleeve it has 73/93. The 73 i guess is a nod to BM’s FAC 73 but if so then the 93 should really be 103 as in TLU’s FAC 103? As it’s the full length of both songs the sound is bloody awful squashed on to a 7”.

I love it too.

I recall waking up early to call the Exhibiting museum to order my copies (I gave one to a friend). It was originally supposed to be limited to 3000 copies, but don't quote me on that. I have heard that there was little to no input from Bernard. Primarily composed by Hooky and Steve (while Bernard was busy working on lyrics for other tracks, perhaps?).

I read that Video 586 was mainly Bernard and Steve too. If they used a session musician on Refucklic It was a lucky escape.

I first heard Hayprick on the Demos, Outtakes and Rarities cassette and I didn't know what the fuck it was. There were also Prime 586 one and two, Homage and Ode to Joy / Rocking Carol. I thought it was a female vocalist so a track by The Inadequates. About a year later I read what it was in the Ideal for Living book and then the Record Collector article. Kids these days have it easy.

I've got Video 5-8-6 on the 'Touch Sampler', the 'Twice As Nice' CD, the 'Be Music Presents New Order CD' and the standalone 12"/CD from Touch. The only thing I haven't got is the original 'Featuremist' tape (I do have a rip of this though).

I absolutely love the Video 5-8-6 track. Especially the full length 22 minute version. It's bonkers and brilliant.

Just for the sake of completeness, the track also appeared as a bonus track on the download version of the recent PC&L box-set (pity it wasn't included in the physical set).

Also, another version of the video, clocking in at 09:38, was a hidden 'Easter Egg' on DVD2 of the same set. I tweeted Steve about this and he said "It is from some primitive apple 2e video experiments. I did with Malcolm Whitehead in 1982 to a very early version of 586. Aka video 586. I don’t think it was shown at the opening of the hac. June 82 gig possibly?"

I haven't completely compared this video to the one on 'A Factory Video' but, IIRC, it seemed 'different' to me. Perhaps this is something that you could have a look at negative1, as one your comparisons.

Whilst I think about it, another variant to the track (which, again, I guess, is edited from the full length version) is the 2:38 Haçienda Construction footage that appears at the start of the 'A Factory Outing' video.

So, to summarise the variants of Video 5-8-6:

On audio format:

Full length version (22:07) (from 'Video 5-8-6' 12" & CD single, 'New Order Presents Be Music' CD & 'Power, Corruption and Lies: Definitive Edition' box set (digital download only)) Part One (7:27) (from 'Featuremist cassette) Part Three (14:12) (from 'Featuremist cassette) Part Two (7:02) (from "Touch. Sampler' CD) Edit (6:13) (from 'Twice As Nice' CD)

On video format: "Primitive 5-8-6" (5:49) (from 'A Factory Video' VHS) "Haçienda Construction Footage" (2:38) (from 'A Factory Outing' VHS) Easter Egg (09:38) (from 'Power, Corruption and Lies: Definitive Edition' box set, DVD2)

As regards 'From Brussels With Love', I picked up the LTM reissue a few years back. I also treated myself to the over-sized 'special edition' from Les Disques Du Crépuscule that was released late last year, as a Christmas present to myself:

https://www.discogs.com/Various-From-Brussels-With-Love/release/16032422

However, I'm embarrassed to say that, with everything going on in my life / in the world at present, I've haven't even unwrapped it yet, let alone listened to it.

Like you, Michael, I first heard 'Haystack' on a bootleg cassette that I bought from a record fair in about 1990. I did know what it was (I think I read about it in Mark Johnson's book) but didn't really know what to make of it at the time. I've come to love the track over the years. A very interesting curio.

Apparently, Hewick recorded another track ('A Piece Of Fate') with New Order, but this is apparently 'lost'. Pretty annoying. Hopefully it turns up at some point. You'd think it would be lurking on a tape somewhere. I don't even think Hewick has a copy. I remember him asking when the Hannett tapes were found by Julia Adamson whether they contained this track, but I'm not sure he ever found out.

Yeah, I know. Weird eh?

There's been some debate over the years about this.

Here's the listing for the Sampler at Touch33.net which states:

"New Order: The missing middle section of the 23 minutes song of this well-known band. Recorded in 1982 in Manchester."

https://touch33.net/catalogue/t\_zero\_2-touch-sampler-2.html

So, by their description, it is the middle part (i.e. part 2), but I guess there might be some overlap (i.e. it contains the end of part 1 and/or the beginning of part 3 also). I've never tried to compare the versions. Again, negative1 probably knows more about this than I.

Edit: In fact, looking at the times, parts 1 & 3 add up to about the length of the full-length version themselves (although I would say that my '14:12' includes some talking at the end of the mp3, so not truly accurate). So, who knows? It's all a bit confusing. Would be interested to see a comparison between all the versions (if this is practical) to see where the versions start and end.

Nope, nor Haystack master. They probably were both kept by Anthony Wilson rather than Rob (being for a Kevin Hewick release rather than a New Order one).

It was on https://www.discogs.com/New-Order-Demos-Outakes-Rarities/release/7935833 and I bought it (in 1992) in a different cover, plus parts two and three. They got less and less interesting - in fact the only thing I really 'needed' off the others was Let's Go / Nothing For Me. Given the high profile of New Order, the number of official and unofficial compilations and the joys of Youtube, I'm sure that the other collaboration would've surfaced by now. I had the same hunch about the Pet Shop Boys' True Faith mix - they're both big names and it's a popular track, so if it existed it'd be easy to find. Links tended to go straight to Shit Poppyboner's remix. Probably the Confusion arose cos of Shep's Pets link or cos the Pets sometimes DJed and have strong links to NO.

If I had to guess, I would think that the unfinished track was probably never mixed, so therefore only existed on the multitrack tape for the session.

I think I read somewhere that the session fell to pieces (Bernard playing Buzzcocks riffs and eventually walking out, Hannett not playing ball etc.), so it certainly seems possible that the track was never properly finished.

A real shame.

Hmmm - just found this on JD Central. This is probably where I read it:

"around june 1980 (just over a month after ian curtis' suicide), hewick was booked to go into graveyard studios (famous for a certain ratio's marvellous "graveyard and the ballroom" cassette) to record 5 tracks for the planned double 10" (which later became the aforementioned "factory quartet"). the night before, tony wilson phoned hewick and suggested that "the jds" go into the studio to back him. wilson told hewick that the jds wanted to carry on as a band and playing someone else's material would ease their transition back into recording.no one ever told hewick that this might have been a try-out session for a lead singer of the soon-to-be new order. much later, when terry christian suggested the idea on a bbc radio derby interview in 1983, hewick was hurt enough to be unable to go to a new order gig for quite some time afterwards. "well you're a better singer than any of them aren't you?" said christian. the rumour would appear to be substantiated in the liner notes to "from brussels with love", although hewick maintains it was not the case.to quote kevin: "i was picked up at piccadilly station by bernard and stephen in a really old car. they were really friendly, good humoured and i soon felt at ease - for a while--- forgive my memory but i seem to recall it was only on arriving at graveyard that i was told that martin hannett was going to produce the session! at last i met peter hook who privately i held in most fanlike awe - he soon came over as the one who took the lead with things, who pulled things together into shape. we worked on two songs "haystack" and "a piece of fate". it was decided to do "haystack" first."the resulting song, "haystack," a stalwart of hewick's live set, appears on the "from brussels with love" compilation on les disques du crepuscule (cd, cassette, and lp formats). the recording suffers from a complete and utter lack of production. kevin indicates that this was the result of hannett showing up halfway through the session, pronouncing that the assembled group of musicians (hewick, bernard, peter, and steven) sounded like "fairport convention" [ouch!] and curling up under the mixing desk for a bit of a sleep. hewick was told hannett was exhausted from working through the night on a john cooper clarke recording session. he remembers hannett leaving before the end and doubts whether hannett actually twiddled and knobs on this recording at all!the assembled "backing" band told the engineer at the beginning of the session that they'd decided to call themselves "new order". when hewick pointed out that rob asheton (former member of the stooges) had formed a band called the new order, a clearly annoyed bernard shot back "only you would know that."the songthe song is inspired by a scene with jack lemmon and lee remick in "the days of wine and roses", with loads of heroin addiction imagery (which i can't even believe i missed in favour of a sexual interpretation!). hook's bass rumbles along, bernard knocks away at the polyphonic synths, stevie bangs the drums, and hewick delivers a langorously lounge-y vocal performance and plays guitar. he doesn't sound nearly as nervous as he must've been, although the beauty of his voice fails to show through.the "other" songthe assembled band worked on a second song that has never seen the light of day. "a piece of fate" was the track - later reworked by hewick into a song called "no miracle" in 1993. hewick, who was utterly in awe of the backing band assembled for his humble session, pointed out to bernard that the two note guitar solo he was playing was from buzzcock's "boredom" and was stunned when bernard, threw his gibson sg down on the floor and stormed out. this so unnerved hewick that he was unable to complete any other songs for the session. wilson, still wanting to feature the young kevin on a factory record, replaced the session with the live tracks on the factory quartet. all in all, not an auspicious recording for the young lad's first "professional" recording session, but a story for the grandkids!"

I've never heard that 'No Miracle' track. I can't seem to find the track on streaming services. If I find it, I'll post here. Might be interesting to hear.

Cheers -1. I had a feeling that you posted this info before.

Just as a matter of interest, have you ever tried to sync up the different versions to deftermine which bits of the 23 minute track have been used in each particular edit?

It's a fine little song, and I really like Hewick's vocals.

I find myself singing it, without intention, quite frequently.

Ah, cool!

I'll give them a look.

It might be worth revisiting, now we have a new edit (the 'easter egg' on the recent DVD).

discogs shows 24 copies starting at US$8.00, a lot cheaper than what i got it for.

Is this the only official release of the Rough Mix of Confusion on CD? It got edited on the original edition of Singles back in 2005 (another unique version, I suppose?)

I also purchased the 2020 remaster of the 12"... are these supposed to come with some sort of digital download? I've failed to see any indication...

Sadly, there were no download codes for these or any of the Movement related singles. I ended up buying FLACs as well as the 12”s.

Bit annoying. It would’ve been nice to include a download code.

Are there official FLACs for sale? Where?

I bought the 12" hoping for a download like Be a Rebel, just came to mind the Factory releases are not being reissued by Mute Records....

there are so many remixes of 'touched by the hand of God', its hard to track them,

  1. the original salvation versions
  2. the arthur baker remixes
  3. the 7 inches and edits
  4. the best of biff and memphis
  5. the hand of bias mix

and probably more...

so the German cd: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Salvation-Original-Soundtrack/release/417642

Isn't it just Touched by the Hand of Dub with an extra 2 and half minutes or so at the beginning?

I have that Salvation CD.The version of TBTHOG is quite radically different , kind of a raw and live drum sound for a start.

The 2020 Confusion remaster 12" did not come with a download code, none of the 2020 remastered 12" 's came with codes.

Touched is one of my favourite singles ever, and I love the rawer version on the soundtrack. That said, I only have the dutch CD. Never heard about the bonus track on the japanese release for many years.

I have both UK and JP CD5. Confusion (1987 dub) is still exclusive to the UK CD single, no?

The BIAS remix is also pretty good

I have the Saville sleeve version of 'Salvation' (Canadian?) on CD, plus the European variant with the standard (terrible) film poster cover, but with the 8:00 exclusive remix.

I got the former, of all places, in 'Our Price' in Stafford. I've no idea what it was doing there. Stafford isn't the biggest of towns and having a Canadian pressing there was just odd. I can't even remember if it was in the 'New Order' section or the soundtrack section. I just remember being very surprised by it, especially considering I didn't even know that Saville had done a cover for it. This would've been 1993ish.

I've also got the cassette. I can pretty much pinpoint exactly when I got this; around November 1990. I was going to Manchester on the train one day and I picked up a copy of 'Record Collector' to read during my journey. This had part 2 of a New Order article (I'd bought part 1 the previous month). I remember reading about the 'Salvation!' soundtrack for the first time there. I then made it my mission to get a copy that day.

I managed to track down the tape downstairs in HMV on Market Street, Manchester. Sadly, though, there was something wrong with side 2 of the tape. It had a really annoying buzz throughout; something that wasn't on side 1. I imagine that this must've been caused during the transfer and wonder if other tapes are blighted like mine.

As regards the TBTHOG release itself, I definitely have the CD, but am pretty sure I have the 7" & 12" lurking somewhere in storage.
Apart from occasional items that I'd purchase on a whim, I used to be quite specific in what I'd buy in respect of New Order. Initially, as I was always short of money, I just used to look for 'gaps' in my remix collection.

For instance, if I already had the remixes contained on the 12" (e.g. on 'Substance'), I wouldn't buy the 12" (or not initially). For example, I would've bought the 12" remix of 'True Faith', but wouldn't've bought the standard 12" (as both tracks were on 'Substance'). Consequently, I have virtually every 7" of New Order but am missing some 12"s.

In the case of 'TBTHOG', I'd have bought the CD (best quality format), the 7" (for the two 'edits') and the 12" (for the full-length version of the b-side).

'Touched By The Hand Of God' seems to get a bit of a bad rap with most New Order fans I know. Much like 'Confusion' and 'State Of The Nation', it seems like quite a few fans dislike it.

Personally, I love it. Seen as if I got into the band when 'True Faith' was released, 'Touched...' seemed like more of that goodness that I had enjoyed on 'True Faith'.

I had that Record Mirror two parter as well. My rule was all vinyl with other formats only if they had exclusives, but as I've said, Iost interest with London bullshit, practical issues and the Spice takeover. I got Salvation in a second hand shop in Cambridge in 1993. I remember cos I'd had one of my worst ever drinking binges the night before and it kind of made up for the hangover. Far prefer Baker's Touched, but I went through that on Denis' thread. Spice Girls forum. Some threads may be sticky.

On the Salvation album, apart from the New Order tracks and the two Cabaret Voltaire tracks the rest of the music is possibly the worst music I’ve ever heard in my life. Utter garbage. As is the film from what I remember, I think I found it on YouTube once and tried to watch it and got maybe halfway through and just had enough.

Thanks to a member on these forums, I was finally able to see the film 2-3 years ago. It is as bad as everyone says. Avoid!

I'm grateful to the user that helped me out though. At least I can say I've seen it.

By the way, I've often thought that, at least at one stage, 'Salvation Theme' and 'Sputnik' were different parts of the same piece of longer music (similar to the 'Peter Saville Soundtrack'). If I remember correctly, if you watch the film, certain bits of the soundtrack itself seems to contain elements of both tracks.

I reckon that, at some point, the band (or even the film makers / record label) chopped it into pieces and called it by two separate names. Maybe to pad out the soundtrack; make it look like the band had recorded more pieces for the film.

As possible evidence of this theory, on those 'Salvation Demos' that have been doing the rounds for years, one of the two versions of 'Salvation Theme' on them was actually labelled up as 'Sputnik'. That could possibly denote that the two pieces may have been edited from a longer piece, or that they had interchangeable names. Could just be mislabelling though, as well, I guess.

I may be completely wrong here though. Just pure (and fun!) speculation on my part.

Me too, but this film was just pretty bad, IMHO.

I will say though that I like Stephen McHattie, so that, and the soundtrack, was the silver lining to an otherwise dreary cloud.

I'm not sure of my reasoning for buying this. I'm thinking that I might have bought it for the BM1988 Dub, which I possibly didn't have at the time (I got it later, after having bought both the 12" promo and the CDV).

It’s different. Beach Buggy 12” is 6:52, whilst the Dub is 7:18. Both were included on the Recycle Project.

The Dub is the same as the DJ Only Mix on here:

Ok, compared Blue Monday 1988 Dub and Beach Buggy. Yeah there’s quite a few differences isn’t there. Seems to be a lot more of the mad man going on about “ ah boy this is too much” and “ look at them! Look at them!” and other stuff on the dub. Beach Buggy samples the 1234 from Hurt and WWWRL from Confusion 1987 which the dub doesn’t. Interesting! They’re quite different.

The ‘Salvation Demos’ include another (shorter) version of ‘Salvation Theme’ (sometimes wrongly listed as being ‘Sputnik’). It doesn’t look like you have that one listed.

What I have is as follows:

Salvation Theme (Demo 1) 4:46 Touched By The Hand Of God (Demo) 5:08 Let’s Go (Demo) 3:31 *** Salvation Theme (Demo 2) 1:51 (sometimes erroneously listed as ‘Sputnik’ (Demo) Skullcrusher (Demo) 3:49

*** This is a vocal demo of the ‘Nothing For Me’ version (I.e. not the older ‘Waiting For So Long’ vocal demo)

They're different remixers for a start, Beach Buggy is a Michael Johnson remix, the Dub is one of the John Potoker/Quincy Jones remixes.

Found my copy of the BM1988 US 12". Couldn't find the promo CD with the dub anywhere. Don't own the CDV.

Some other oddities, I suppose?

I believe the BLT remix on the 12" of this compilation was different in some way? Maybe longer?

And the there's Vietnam...

I've seen a clip of the film somewhere with 'Let's Go' in the background and it's different to what's on the 'Salvation' soundtrack and any of the other released versions. Sounds a bit more synthy. Hope it gets released as part of the 'Low-life' definitive edition.

Other exclusive versions/edits from soundtracks

Not sure if the "original"(?) version of Shellshock, with the extra verse, was released somewhere else.

This soundtrack features an official edit of Pettibone's The Morning Sun remix, different from the one on the promo CD and CDV, which got botched on the chorus. It can also be found here: https://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Best-Ever-Indie/release/7168650

20 years on, and I still find it hard to believe Someone Like You wasn't the (obvious) first single. Crystal is great and did really well, but I love this track.

Looks like it's contained within this clip here on YouTube from 1:27 onwards. Sounds like the Salvation soundtrack CD version but with a more prominent synth bass. Could be the same mix but EQd or compressed a bit. Or a different mix. Tricky to tell.

Never a big fan of BM 88 either, certainly after the scorching original on Spunkstance, but the video's cool. They even got Gillian to move a muscle. There was also a DMC mix which was similar to Bitch Bugger 12", from The Remix boot I keep going on about.

They're different remixers for a start, Beach Buggy is a Michael Johnson remix, the Dub is one of the John Potoker/Quincy Jones remixes.

Are okay, thanks. My fault for not reading the credits more closely. But as I said I’m not a big fan of BM 88 so really didn’t bother before

I love that version of 'Shellshock' from the 'Pretty In Pink' soundtrack. It's easily my favourite version. It strikes a nice balance between having the 'bonus verse' that was eliminated from the 7" and 'Substance' edit, but isn't anywhere near as repetitive as the full 12" version.

As well as the three exclusive mixes on the soundtracks mentioned above (Pretty In Pink, Married To The Mob, Salvation!, Bright Lights, Big City), there's also:

'Temptation' 3:30 (from 'Something Wild')

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Something-Wild-Music-From-The-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack/release/13927074

'Blue Monday-95' (Hardfloor Mix) 4:45 (from 'The Lakes')

https://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Lakes/release/6158976

'Bizarre Love Triangle' 3:25 (from 'Threesome')

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Threesome-Music-From-The-Motion-Picture/release/2871665

I think the latter one (BLT) isn't actually exclusive, but is just a rare mix. If I recall correctly, it also appeared on a BLT Us 12" promo:

https://www.discogs.com/New-Order-Bizarre-Love-Triangle/release/349673

Can anyone confirm if these are the same mixes (i.e. that 7" edit and the 'Threesome' version)? I have the latter but not the former, so can't check.

Another soundtrack of note, which doesn't contain an exclusive remix, but is still fairly interesting:

'Murder' (from 'Empire State')

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Empire-State-Original-Soundtrack-Recording/release/7859354

I have all the soundtracks listed above, plus the aforementioned 'Married To The Mob', 'Pretty In Pink' and 'Salvation!'. All on CD.

Yep. There's also another exclusive edit of the 1987 version on this:

https://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Indie-Scene-82/release/445081

It's not just an early fade, as it appears to start and end around about the same place. It must be shorter in the middle somewhere, although I've never checked where.

beyond terrible for new order, but as an 808 state, i like them if i don't think of them of as 'new order'.

I believe the BLT remix on the 12" of this compilation was different in some way? Maybe longer?

yes, the vinyl is different from the cd, i think it was the richard x remix.

The Japanese Music Complete box. Does that fall in the oddities class? Either way all my attempts to tie it back up in a correct and impressive manner have always met with failure . Set me back around £70 a few years ago .Took about 3 months between purchasing and delivery.

It took like six months to arrive here. Plus 100% in taxes/fees.

The Music Complete era has its own oddities, like the picture 7" of People on the High Line, featuring an exclusive mix, and a few digital ones like the full instrumental album, Restless + Tutti Frutti instrumental remixes and the Weatherall dub for Restless, unreleased anywhere to my knowledge. Not to mention the radio edits.

Somehow I managed to get the instrumentals, but it isn't even listed on Discogs. I only found this one with the extended instrumentals, which I've never heard about: https://www.discogs.com/pt\_BR/New-Order-Complete-Music-Extended-Instrumentals/release/9966702

It was discussed years ago in this thread: http://forums.neworderonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=3077

In addition, the Extended Bonus mix of Restless from the japanese CD appears to differ from all other 12"s released

Yes I have that People On The Highline picture disc 7”. That also took a while, though think that was manufacturing issues. Also have the MC CD singles card slipcase ( and the complete set of the CD singles to go in it) and the Deluxe box with the album on vinyl and 12” discs with the extended mixes.

Oh and digital files of the Weatherall dub of Restless , Radio edits of all the album tracks and Tutti Frutti STEMS ( didn’t bother with the Academic one)

3 3 likes

I have that version of Restless that appeared on the Japanese edition CD. Can’t recall how it differs so I’ll have to dig it out sometime

It's shorter and has some different drum breaks in the middle.

The japanese mix is uncredited, maybe done by New Order themselves (Morris)?

I would be interested at the time, if it came with yet another unreleased tracks. The regular shaped 7" was enough for me

When you say 'radio edits of all the album tracks', are you just referring to the singles, or were there radio edits for every track? As far as I knew, there were radios edits of Restless, Singularity and Tutti Frutti, plus two radio edits of POTHL (Claptone & Richard X).

Are there any others?

Well, like i said, all the album tracks.God you're a doubting Thomas at times aren't you.All the album tracks have a couple of minutes or more chopped out. Some more expertly done than others. In places some tracks just jump from one part to another.Other sections are done better or even rearranged a little.I suppose anyone who knows how do it could do it if they have the right software or something. No idea who did the edits.Think i only ever listened to it once or twice, will have to give it another spin.I'll send it to you

Probably, but keep your hair on! I was just seeking clarification.

To be fair, I've never heard of radio edits of the non-album tracks and you didn't mention where these were featured.

It just seemed odd to me that they would do radio edits of every track. Hence my question. I just wondered if you made a typo (I do loads). That seemed (to me) more likely than the band doing radio edits for every single track (especially when I hadn't previously even heard of these).

Well I get the feeling the band had nothing to do with it but of course I can’t say for sure . I’m assuming they were done by someone in their bedroom who knows how to edit tracks using some sort of programme ? I think I must have stumbled across them on Soulseek, can’t remember for sure now.Anyway I’ve uploaded it to that Shared Drive. I think. I may have just shared it with myself, who knows! 😄 Give us a shout if it’s not in there.

uncut picture discs are just that, they don't have any different tracks. they are the full size (usually round), before they get cut into smaller or different shapes.

It's had plenty of discussion in the past... Personally I prefer his single (remix) version. Having said that, I was a big fan of all the "Nu Skool Breaks" dance stuff that was around back then. Including Lee Coombs stuff. I like the whole album (pronounced Break fast... as in "Breaks" music)

Coombs also did yet another remix of the track about a year after the song was released. But that remix only ever got played in a DJ set he did for BBC Radio 1. I guess he still had the parts and used that (2003) remix as bait to make us listen to his DJ mix for the BBC.

*EDIT* I mentioned it here post #42 on p2 I *did* have a radio rip of it on my hard drive, but eh, that hard drive has since died...

I had one of those, subway size and all. Got mine at university in the 90s. Died of overuse a few years later.

One that has survived is my subway "Temptation" Ally Pally NYE 1999 poster.

Similar to this

Slightly less cool but certainly more unique was a huge London Records 3D foam display for "Republic" that I annoyed 78s Records in Perth into giving me in 1993. The street gymnastics it took for me to get that miles down the road into a truck in one piece in high velocity Perth winds should've won me some fan award.

It was quite the party piece until someone drunkenly bowled into it in 1996. Kind of fitting maybe. Wish I at least had a damn photo of it now.

Posters, yes I had a few back in the 80s but one reason and another they’re now all long gone. Guess the idea of having posters on my wall was something I grew out of. I had that Factus 8 one, it covered almost ceiling height to floor on my bedroom wall at the house I grew up in. Also even had Thieves Like Us one. And one with 1981 era photos of the 4 band members. Also had a massive one of the Low Life cover. Oh and a Perfect Kiss one( with a kind of a theme based on the video). Slightly annoying I no longer have any of them.

Edit: The Perfect Kiss poster was something like this , though from Googling, there’s a few variations on it

Wish I at least had a damn photo of it now.

nice, interesting stories about those.

It was free with the 30 years of New Order issue of Clash magazine I think. So 30 years would have been 2010. Or 2011, depending on if you classed 30 years from when they formed New Order or 30 years since their first release in 1981. I have a feeling it was 30 years since they formed , so 2010. Either way, I never managed to obtain a copy and so don’t have the poster.

more information about the technique tourbook:

"Rare ‘tour book’/ one-off magazine/ lookbook made for New Order’s US Technique tour with photographs of the band plus Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton, Martin Hannett etc, all by Donald Christie. 24 numbered plates of Saville’s art- work, captioned with enigmatic texts and accompanied by a # such as “#HowCoolIsColdness” and as such invent-ing ‘hashtagging’ in the process. Still life images such as a blooming peony and a bust of Louis XIV, as well as the iconic ‘Dichromat’ cherub, are interspersed with portraits of the band. The book was never properly distributed, as it was not published in time for the tour because Saville was deliberating over the design. Saville remarked recent- ly that: “Most of them weren’t shipped and remained in a basement in Manchester. Factory was gone within three to four years, so who knows what happened to them. Maybe they were thrown away, maybe someone took them home.” (ShowStudio, interview, 2016)."

did new order have any other tourbooks for other tours?

i never looked before.

Saville invented hashtagging? Lol. No. Just no.

In the tour book the hash/number symbol precedes the number of the photo, not the quote FFS! There’s a space between the hash symbol/number and the quote. The thing of putting a hash/ number symbol ( actually the name for the symbol is Octothorpe, look it up) before a number is something that’s been around forever hasn’t it???!!

1 1 like

The # symbol has meant "number" or "pound" (in the U.S.) since 1850. It only came to be a "hashtag" with the rise of social media in 2007.

In the tour book, the symbol is paired with the image number, not the quote. It's ridiculous to think Saville or the like invented hashtags in 1989.

#14 is not Hook. It's one of their road crew testing a microphone.

I bought my first copy through eBay in 1998. It's still crisp, and the fluorescent orange hasn't faded.

According to Discogs it's a 9" flexi - never seen one of those before, but if it really has the Substance CD version of Shame of the Nation on it - then that's nearly 8 minutes on it's own!

The Bunnymen track is 4 minutes and I don't know the GLJ song at all, but even if it's 3 minutes, that's still 15 minutes of music on a 9" flexi..ouch

I read about it in the Record Mirror double article. The sound quality Is irrelevant as you wouldn't wanna play anyway cos you'd ruin it and you'd have the actual material in high quality on the 'proper' issue anyway.

Had both back in the day and owner of the record store I worked at said Label Rep told him the blue version was rarer. Never saw any evidence to back this up.

I do recall that although the puffy version was given it's own product number unique to that of the standard U.S. release. But if you look at the manufacturer numbers engraved on the disc, it has the standard product number and the top of the disc is just painted over a standard one.

Just a hunch, but it's very hard to take an accurate photo of fluorescent orange, and it wouldn't make sense to emulate the orange inflatable ring on the cover by creating a yellow puffy sleeve. I think it's either a photo that hasn't been color-corrected, or it's sun damage, but not actually yellow.

So we know from The Dress that colours can show up differently in photos than in real life. And we also know from the above experience in bold that this can hapen.

Well, considering orange and yellow are next to each other on the colour spectrum, it seems plausible enough to me that it could just be a weird photo, and that it's really orange.

Put your copy on a flatbed scanner and see how the color comes out. I ended up photographing mine in indirect sunlight to get a hi-res version with the correct color. You can even see along the edges that it looks a little more yellow than orange.

i'm sorry, but there must be something wrong with your scanner.

i've tried 3 different ones, hp scanjet g4050, brother, and canon, and none are having that issue. i did not adjust any settings, or use any autocorrect features in the software either.

here's the scans from the hp one:

full untouched 300 dpi scans. https://i.ibb.co/PWt6cP0/front.jpg https://i.ibb.co/jL55B4y/back.jpg

i would think its just another color, so i'm not sure why it wouldn't show up right.

I'm not the only person upthread who talks about fluorescent colors being difficult to scan and/or variance.

That's the image as scanned at 600dpi, with no correction. What could I possibly have to gain by arguing with you or trying to convince you there's not a yellow puffy case? There simply isn't one.

Are you really going to hound poor old Torbjorn with this one? He's in New Order retirement.

I've never seen one in 28 years of looking and I've heard several times from the biggest NO collectors in the world that this simply does not exist. If that's not conclusive enough, you'd have to assume that surely someone somewhere would've added a copy to Discogs by now.

As 50poundnote demonstrated, some scanners clearly reproduce the yellow/blue combo.

On top of this, some copies of the blue text version also have the clear promo sticker on front. So that counters any lingering argument about the yellow being the promo version.

Case is closed on this one.

Yeah, with the free for all of the Net, I'm sure that if the sleeve existed, there'd be an image somewhere. It was the same with the Pet Shop boys' True Faith remix - links just went to the Shep Pettyboner version. Surely it'd be somewhere... I googled the 13-track Republic and found the Sabres' mixes on the end. As I pointed out before, these things are a mixed blessing in disguise. At least Repubelick ends well - do you want, really really want two mixes they probably never even listened to stuck on at the end? It was the same with the McCartney Collection's Press to Play - not his best album, but with a glorious orchestral finish/flourish. Or above plus ten sex silence followed by three tracks that even the Macca of 86 relegated to B-side status - and you could Youtube anyway. Less is more and all that.

Case is closed on this one.

does anyone have an orange promo one then?

havent seen one of those either.

i think it would have been fun, if republic was released in several colors, just like the 9 colors of procession:

My blue text version doesn't have the promo sticker. Steve Smith had one.

It's as per the original "yellow" scan above but in orange.

All this just jogged my memory that I also owned an official promo t-shirt of the Limited Run release back in '93. Athletic grey with "Republic - The limited run.." in dayglo orange, as per sleeve font.

It'd fetch some decent coin today.

here's the perfect kiss, my all time favorite song from them, and maybe from any group, ever...

  1. There are the 4 main colors, plus Japanese (yellow), US (charcoal black), and 1 silver one that was released from some other record that i can't remember. i thought it was fine time, but nope, so its something else.

^ Don’t quite understand what you’re saying about the silver version, negzy lad. Released from another record ? You thought it was Fine Time? Not sure what you mean

CMYK

Cyan, magenta, yellow and black: the 4 colors used for color printing. Ironic, since The Perfect Kiss, Low-life, and Sub-culture are all black and white. I love Saville’s ironic art jokes.

(And yes, technically The Perfect Kiss is silver, but in the color scheme of things it’s 50% black and 50% white.)

somehow i ended up replacing the black inner with a silver one from another record.

but i can't find the record i got it from. i thought the silver would look better than black.

Ah ok. Reminds me, a few years ago I noticed that the plain paper white inner i had in my Run 2 12” was possibly the wrong inner and should be a gold one to match the gold inside of the outer sleeve . Searched through all my vinyl for a gold inner and found one in the World In Motion remixes 12” ( the one with the Caribinieri mix etc) . The outer sleeve for that is gold so I must have at some point by mistake ended up putting the gold inner from Run 12” in it.

here's the follow up with the records,

the cover is just a slipcase gatefold, thats empty on the inside.

these new order postcards, just sold for $200: ebay.com/itm/NEW-ORDER-SINGLES-PROMO-POSTCARD-SET-30X-CARDS-PETER-SAVILLE-ARTWORK-POSTER/313471853812?hash=item48fc60e4f4:g:bi0AAOSw1LBgYNbX&autorefresh=true

i paid $60 for mine when they were out....

stuck them in a vellum envelope:

there's printing on the back, with the name and number.

pretty simple to reproduce envelope and cards. they are very poor, high contrasty scans, on glossy photo paper.

^ After all these years I’ve still never seen the question answered about that 5.05 edit on that Polish 7” . Is BM cut short at the start and/or end or is cut in a number of places throughout? I’ve still never seen an answer to the question
