The Ultimate Poll: Joy Division vs. New Order

I know they are basically the same band and stuff, but their music is very different.

I've haven't seen a poll asking this, which is surprising, considering how many polls there are.

Anyways< I can't decide. I got into JD first, discovering NO when I ran out of JD stuff to get (sans Heart and Soul, which I acquired after starting a tenative NO record collection). So it's like I'm their father and I'm forced to choose between my two children. I just can't do it (the same goes for the Beatles and Wings or Plastic Ono Band)

Damn...well, I agree with Happy One. I actually got into Joy Division only AFTER I got into New Order! So, I guess if I had to pick one on temporal terms, I'd have to pick J.D. since they would eventually lead to N.O.....

New Order's great, but for me, they can't touch the power and brilliance of Joy Division. and Barney, as fantastic as he is, simply cannot measure up to the legendary Ian Curtis.

I'm not going to vote on this one. Although they are essentially the same band, member wise, anyway, I can't think of them in terms of who I like better. Two completely different experiences as far as I can tell. I love both bands equally for the most part, but for different reasons.

i got into newOrder in my early teens and i love them, but then i discovered they used to be called joy division, so, one day i went and bought the three albums available and they changed my life, it was an incredible emotional time for me, i will always love joy division.

I can't vote in this; a lot of the reason I like New Order is because they WERE Joy Division and bear traces of their previous incarnation all over the place: lyrics that obliquely refer to Ian Curtis, instrumental arrangements similar at times (for example "Primitive Notion"), not to mention the fact that New Order continue to play JD songs and that some songs ("Ceremony" is the most prominent though not the only example) date from the period that could equally be called "late Joy Division' or "early New Order" (not to start any more controversies). A better question would be "What would New Order be like if they had never been Joy Division?" I suppose we know the answer: all their records would have sounded like Republic.

I love JD but it's not something I can listen to everytime I get in my car or home stereo. New Order I can listen to over and over and over or until my wife threatens to break my records.

Joy Division can't be compared with New Order cause they sound completely different.I prefer Barney guitar in Joy Division's days cause he was free to do his fantastic solos,Hooky's bass was more powerful as Steve drums too.In New Order they have beautiful melodies and technology on their side. I just can't stop dancing and singing when I listen to them.We also can't compare Gillian to Ian,he was a poet and now a mith.

New Order, but probably because I'm from the late '90s era. I think the Joy Division stuff was very era-relevant in terms of post-punk. When I first bought Get Ready I went for the dancy/rock, and JD was a bit of a rougher edge which took longer to like. Even now I'm not a particular fan of Closer.

But the progressional concepts are there to see, in songs like Transmission--it had pop roots which ended up taking root in PCL. The obvious candidate for pop/dance progression is LWTUA (which placed in the US dance charts) but even aside from that the hints were there. I always felt YSF was a bit Joy Division-ish in its vibe even though it didn't sound anything like what JD had done--it just seemed the sort of thing they'd go on and do by the 3rd or 4th album.

Funny, I kind of feel the same way. But I chose for New Order just because they're around much longer, hahaha. But I never - I mean NEVER - thought there would be more people in this world who'd combine an affection for NO/JD with The Beatles AND The Wings! I'm totally surpised! :)

It's a hard question, men. Really a hard choice I voted NO because they are alive. But that's no reason, I really like JD from Transmission it's the best song ever made. I could make a list of NO songs, but the "aura" of JD "STILL" remains. Really a hard choice.

Although I voted for New Order, this is a very blunt remark, James. As if you can possibly cut off New Order from Joy Division that easily. Very, very stupid. And you know it!

My PERSONAL preference goes for New Order, I prefer New Order's music. But I think Joy Division may have been more important to music in general, since its influence is seen everywhere, from recent Rock bands to Techno stuff. But personally I would not be a fan if there were only JD.
