New Order to Release Box Set, New Best-Of In the end you will submit: this is bullshit!
Eric Marth reports: Billboard reports that the endlessly repackaged New Order are releasing two more collections this winter: Retro, a four-disc box set, and International, their second singles compilation in a decade (they've released a total of five singles since the last one).
Retro is designed as a "curated museum tour" of New Order's back catalog: the first two discs were compiled by journalists Miranda Sawyer and John McCready, and consist of album cuts and widely available single sides. DJ Mike Pickering (of Manchester's M People) picked out remixes by the likes of Lee Combs and the Chemical Brothers for the third disc, thankfully ignoring everything from 1994's atrocious The Rest of New Order remix collection. The fourth disc contains Primal Scream frontman and one-time Jesus & Mary Chain drummer Bobby Gillespie's selection of 14 live tracks spanning New Order's 23-year career. Retro will be released December 17th by Warner Brothers, contrary to initial reports that Rhino, who handled the US release of Joy Division's Heart And Soul box set, was manufacturing and distributing.
The single CD hits collection International, meanwhile, will be release via Warner on January 28th, and includes New Order staples like the original 12" version of "Blue Monday" and the Shep Pettibone remix of "True Faith" from Bright Lights, Big City, as well as the recent singles "Crystal" and "Here to Stay". A limited number of copies will also feature a mysterious five-song bonus disc, the contents of which are yet unknown. But... we're 95% sure it'll be the same bonus disc that came with the French edition.
New Order are also planning to release a live DVD titled Finsbury Park 2002. In addition to the 14-song live performance, the DVD will feature a 40-minute documentary, tracks from the Temptation concert at the Ally Pally in 1998, and performances from the comeback concert at the Apollo in 1998. Finsbury Park 2002 is already available in Japan, with UK and Canadian releases to follow by the end of the year. No U.S. date has been announced.
