noisiest New Order production

I was listening to Brotherhood again the other day and when the track Angel Dust come on I was struck by just how much was going on in that track. I think this is the noisiest New Order song I have yet heard. There's all sorts of samples going on in there. Who else agress with me>?

I wonder what other New Order songs would fit thiis catagory of "noisy" production ..?

So far I can only come up with Hurt (the 12" version on the Temptation single), tellingly, both these songs are self-produced. Do you think it's better the band produce themselves or get in other people like Steven Hague ? What do others think?

I always thought the original Bizzare Love Triangle was very busy. Some of it just doesn't really click like it should.

regarding this, the 1994 version is much better than the original Bro'hood version, imho.

For me, (if we are looking at it in terms of sample overload on a track), there's three candidates. Angel Dust, BLT single release and Shellshock, which has also got bits going off left right and centre.

"Special" on "Republic" is kinda noisy, musically. That little soft synthesizer intro before the drums kick in isn't even in the same key as the rest of the song! (Well, at least what I could hear...)

Shellshock definetly... the single version is even worse because the editing doesn't fit.

E.g. right at the start "Hold on.. CLUNK... its never enough..."

definatly shellshock stuff is blurting all over the place on that track

'Face Up' has its moments!

Shellshock (voted the worst New Order rack by the Christian Women's Devotional Club of Dearborn, Michigan)

Does anyone else agrree that the Sub-culture 12" is a possible contender as well for noisy overuse of sound effects and scratching edits and suchlike? (especially the flip of the 12" - that bloody racket right at the end - what the hell is that??) Anybody care to explain?

sub culture is such a good song too in it's original and live form. that 12" does serious injustice to the real sub culture. i would give anything to see New Order in 1985. I think quite a few new order tracks are busy. that's one reason i like Vicious Streak so much. Thieves Like Us and YSF are both tunes that accomplish more with less. The way the instruments come in on TLU is perfect. Similar in fact to the structures of YSF and VS.

PCL and Technique are the most streamlined albums while Low Life and Brotherhood are jam packed with sounds.

Shellshock and one of my favourites...yes SUBCULTURE.Loved this right from the beginning and always hearing MORE each time.CRAP cover but nevermind.BLT also is another classic and this time has a LOVELY cover artwork matching SHELLSHOCK in theme. Rocket Cultured Mick

What's with the covers to Shuttlecock, State of the Station and Buzz Lightyear? Anyone have the low-down?

I'd say "Truth" from "Movement". The song just builds up the noise and tension in a slighty gothic and sinister way.

The Kiss of Death takes some beating in my book.

The crescendo of The Perfect Kissing Unit heralds a mighty and thunderous 128 tracks ... crammed full of premium NO choice cuts sparking in unity. So monumentally overloaded with so many wide ranging, individual and demanding sounds that they had to migrate their kit to one of only a scant few studios capable of recording a full 128 tracks back in the day. Rumour has it that the final recording caused mach. 5 on the Ricter scale and bounced Hooky's crisp bag off the mixing device and onto Bernard's ham roll.

Not sure if they've pushed or beaten this power level of Bertie Basset's Allsorts since or previous.

Agree that The Perfect kiss seems to pile on the synths and keyboards at its climax, but I suppose tracks like Angel Dust still leave much of the rest high and dry when it comes to shear kitchen sinks factor!

Someone above made a very good point about Brotherhood and Lowlife being heaviley-produced albums, whilst Technique actually has a cleaner and clearer digitalized (?) sound.

Which brings me onto another thought about which was the last new Order album to be recorded analogue (to tape rather than to computer or disk or whatever.)

The songs on Brotherhood all seem to finish noisily; as Barney pointed out at one gig, (Glasto '89?) "Notice all our songs have big endings? Big songs, small dicks"

.....how about REGRET?.....I thought it is also choc-a-bloc full of synths sounds & guitar noises.....very dense....that's why I kinda prefer the more stripped down New Order Mix version.....

Spot on as well matey! I noticed that too - climaxes galore! I love your moniker - very witty !

Another one I suggest is The Him and Chosen Time - especially the last minute or so.... all that weird electronic noise going on in the background at the very end reminds me eerily of the sound effects in the film "Quatermass And The Pit".

I almost hurled when I heard the 12" version of Sub-Culture. It completely SUCKS icky gooey nasty things.

Well I have the 12" vinyl version. That's just two really long Sabres mixes and a Fire island one which bear no resemblence to the original song. Plus the version on Republic (the original mix) and the same on The Best Of New Order. But I don't possess this New order mix - was it on the CD version by any chance?

Barry ... the NewOrderOriginalMix is classic. It is really worth seeking out.

Somebody be good enough to send a copy to this fine gentleman. He is missing out like no other.
