Spent the best part of yesterday listening to the 'rarities' CD and it was first time that I really had a sustained listen to this version.

Maybe it's the unfamiliarity but I think it's the best version yet. Well for 4 minutes anyway. Defo if it was the full 7-8 minute version.

Anyone else agree or am I committing New Order sacrilege?

Yes it's the best version, as it was the way they made it sound in 1998 when they came back...

And it's the only real edited version, which is perfect to listen too..

Fortunatly, it's now widely available.

And no, it's not the version they did live, this is a studio version, apparently, only Bernard wasn't faking it on stage when they did it live ;)

I have 5 studio versions and although the 12" is my all-time favourite and second (and probably the least known) is the August '84 BBC studio version, I fully agree that '98 is superb and shows more polish and, dare I say it, maturity than the earlier efforts.

'shows more polish and, dare I say it, maturity than the earlier efforts.'

Which is why it's worthless ! The original 7" has more dignity and 'real' emotion in it than all the other versions put together.

my fave is the 12" followed closly by the saturday morning sessions, i havent heard the studio version of '98, only the live one is it really that good?

Thanks Bill! Agree with your comments on the 7" too, '98 is just different. 12" is still King, 'though! ;-)

Yeh, it's pretty smashing all right. The original 7" and 12" versions are still the ones for me too, but this is definitely up there. It's just groovier

Temptation 12" version is my all-time favorite song. I do enjoy listening to the Taras Shevchenko and 98 versions. I have a "Temptation CD" where I have every version of temptation I can get a hold of. The first three versions on the disc are Taras Shevchenko, 12", and then 98. I did this because I thought it was a great representation of the development of the song and the band.

The 12" version rules but i really like the live at Montreux jazz fest version :cool2:

It has a similar feel to the 1987 version but adds the great keyboard arpeggios from the 1982 version in spots. It doesn't fade in but starts with a click track (presumably turned up loud for Stephens benefit for he is deuf).

The '98 version fucking rocks!!! Barney's vocals are immortal, especially those "greeeeeeeey" eyes. And Hooky's bass is peerless......

Was anyone at this concert?

Did they play any other songs aside from Temptation, seems a lot of equipment and effort for just one song

Shame they had to cut out parts of the video with pictures of cyclists and runners etc... still it was for the athletics i guess.

Still be nice to have an unedited copy though ;)

Yep. I'd booked the Monday arvo off to go to Manchester but then it turned out New Order would be on at 1pm or something. So didn't bother travelling. You can see Stash in the vid of Temptation 98. Think he's taking pictures? Can't remember who he's stood with but off the top of me head I think it was John and Roger.

The 98 version is good, but he never sings the 'bolts from up above' part, and that's one of my favorite lines.
