Live album? / Finsbury DVD

Bit of a debate over at "Ceremony" which touches on the subject of live albums: given that several of the recent shows have been professionally recorded are we finally going to get an "official" live LP, either compiled from the '98-'02 shows or a complete gig (Old Trafford I guess would be most people's ideal choice). Some people will whinge about re-hashes, selling-out and "what's-the-point-of-a-live-album?" etc., but I think most of us would like said item. Certainly I'd hand over my money without doing so out of a sense of obligation.....

Secondly, I think the Finsbury DVD is fantastic - captures the againt-the-odds wonderfulness of the day in a way that "3 16" just doesn't (though Reading was a better gig for me.....). Fantastically shot, Hooky is on top form, and I'm pleased to say my broken and bandaged arm makes plenty of appearances waving frantically over people's heads. Ah memories - if only I had any.......

Given the disappointing Retro, I would have preferred a dbl live CD instead.

In some ways, releasing NO or JD gigs offically is unnecessary, because all the good ones (and the shit ones) are probably already available on bootleg. That said, those of us with little or no access to said bootlegs certainly wouldn't mind a massive overhaul of live recordings ala the Fractured Music Archives' release of Preston or Les Bains Douches. There is a market there for more offical releases, and I was hoping such a move might be made for NO's various gigs over the years. However, as always the record companies look at what sells, and somehow I feel a New Order gig from 1984 or so wouldn't be high on their list of "what the kids are listening to!", so it's unlikely that any sort of complete effort would be made. I think if anyone is gonna be able to ensure that New Order's gigography sees the light of day offically, it has to be someone willing to stick his or her neck out and press the issue that we fans do indeed want to be able to purchase legally several memorable gigs. It would have to be something akin to the "Dick's Picks" collection that showcases Grateful Dead gigs for a target audience. As long as those in charge of New Order's fortunes are concerned with the big bucks, however, it's unlikly such a thing would come to pass. Would be nice though....

Well, I wasn't really looking for an endless issuing of semi-official bootlegs - after all, they're readily available from half the people who frequent this forum -'cos that would just be exploitative.

However, if they've been taping all the shows from '98 onwards - and it seems they have - it'd be nice if they issued a live CD "properly". Again, I don't think many of us'd sniff at a well-mixed soundboard release of the sunset-drenched Old Trafford gig......

It would be a great day if the Order ever went the route of the Dead (Dick's Picks) or Pearl Jam and released a slew of live recordings. Even if they went low-rent on packaging to save on costs, I think most of us would be pleased just to have the music.

Hey there...I posted this a few days back...hmmm maybe something to it!!

"I also vote for more live recordings...this has 2 primary advantages for them:

1. The material is already done and just needs to be transferred to cd/dvd. With current gear these can be created/burned very easily.

2. They could easily sell good clean copies of live soundboard recordings to hardcore fans looking to fill out their collection (I think that Pearl Jam did something like this to cash in on the bootlegs of their concerts) ...and of course the packaging would need to be negligible...distribution is easy...mail order ...directly from Manchester. They could probably hire a few local kids to take the orders, burn the cd's and send 'em out.

I figure (and its just a guess) that there are at least 500 to 1000 very hardcore fans (those who like to collect everything and are completists). If each of these fans bought say 10 concerts over the course of 1 year at $20.00 per concert that works out to be...

750 (fans) X 10 (concerts) X 20 (per concert) = $150,000

Hey this is even more than the Sunkist commercial right? And they don't have to publicly embarrass themselves as most of these hardcore fans would treasure "official" releases of bootlegs...

The real question here is do they own the rights to all of their concert recordings? Not sure how all of this works..."

i'd be more interested in getting my mitts on some of the more interesting gigs from the earlier days, during the transition from movement to PCL via temptation. first performance of blue monday (in australia, i think) anyone? never heard it, it may well have been dreadful, but what a thing to get the chance to hear...

of course, the only extant recordings from then are probably on crappy ferric tape in someone's attic...

of course, that's not answering the original question i know...

It would be nice to get some complete NO shows all remastered. I love the live disk from Retro. I also love my live boot of the 98 Reading show.

As much as I enjoyed being at the gig, I found the Finsbury DVD frightening! It'd be much better as an audio only - rather than seeing these fat folk heaving and sweating! As well as a JD set I'd like to hear some of the earlier stuff, stuff we are less likely to see played again and some of the early experimentation, such as the EGG/Temptation/586 megamix (as we pop kids called it in the early eighties)I saw and hated at Hull City Hall '84. Or even the 25 minute ultraviolence from Hull Tower '82!

In fact any release as long as it doesn't include Blue Monday, Temptation, or bizarre fucking triangle.

That megamix.......20 minutes non-stop of three of their finest tracks. Hull 84 was about the best version of that to be honest, though there was one other that worked well (Bristol 84?).
