If everything else stayed the same, would you take or leave Barney's live whoops?

I say Barely Leave It - if there were much fewer of them and not in songs like Atmosphere, I would like it better.

Well, if it's tackful like TPK, Face Up or ELC, I think it's OK.

It's fine, just not on JD songs...I don't remember Ian whooping during Atmosphere

Leave them. They are an integral part of New Order. Barney might have his shortcomings, but we love him nevertheless.

Those woops are kind of annoying...

The whoops are by & large great - they show Barney's actually enjoying himself up there (& we all know Barney's reluctance to play live has in the past reduced the amount of NO we get to see.):)

But not in Atmosphere, please. :(

I like the whoops, except in JD songs. The Barnster has got an incredible ability to fuck up Atmosphere when he starts whooping in it. But he would fuck it up otherwise as well, so... I'm keeping the whoops.

Yeah, leave them. Like so many others have said, he's enjoying himself, really getting into the music and performance, so what's wrong with spontaneous expressions of happiness? Likewise with the dancing. And if he wants to shout "YEAAAHHHHH LETS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!" during Atmosphere, that's even fine by me. Isn't it about time the shroud of precious morbidity was removed from that song anyway?

Besides, the guy's a genius, he's already proven himself, so if he wants to behave like a twat, why shouldn't he?

Seems like most like them (which doesn't surprize me), but I am surprized by the number of people that specifically mentioned that he should not do it during JD songs. The JD whoop thing is why I decided to find out what others thought. I feel much the same, JD whoops sound really odd, especially during mood songs like Atmosphere.

Indeed, lets face it he is enjoying his self, and why bloody not!! thats the reason they formed in the first place!!

Ok i think we all know how immensely powerful Atmosphere can be without the whoops (just look at 316 for example) but maybe he finds that the whoops help him get under the skin of a track and pull out a better performance, or mebbe its like those bizzare faces he used to pull and he doesnt even realize he's doing it!!!

Could be, but I don't have to hear his faces when listening to live stuff... so Barney... make all the faces you want from now on.

i'm going to ride the fence on this one because i think it is one thing to whoop live (an see it) as opposed to hearing it on a cd. i know that listening to it on a cd can be annoying at times, but since i'm still a live order virgin i do not think i can give a fair assessment

I think Barney may be suffering from Tourette's syndrome.

I personally enjoy the whoops. They have a certain charm in their randomness. I wonder who's whoops came first? Barney's or fat Bob's? I know The Cure started using whoops around 1983. Wasn't Barney whooping back in the days of the Movement tour?

Yeh, I've an 81 bootleg with whoops in In A Lonely Place!!!

And you all thought it was bad in Atmosphere...

As long as he whoops, dances badly and reads from an autocue... its Ok by me:D

With regards to whoops on albums, the whoops on Weirdo are actually part of the song and you cant help but whoop along at the appropriate time, it would not sound right without somehow.

So to sum up...

Subtle studio whoops are cool :thumb:

Loud Yaaaaaaaaaays during live renditions of Atmosphere arent so cool :nonono:

Er, Wolfie, my friend, you've never seen New Order live, so why comment?

I don't see what's wrong with the odd whoop during Atmosphere; how do we know Curtis wouldn't have been whooping it up himself, had he been alive today.

Absolute gold Rocket Mick! Had me laughing anyway. But yeah, whooping during atmosphere is a sin but is pretty annoying during the New order stuff as well. It would be alright if they were well timed but often they are not and are just sudden bursts of dickheadedness. I say barely leave them only because he needs to get the timing right. It's good to know that he is having the time of his life up there.

And i sincerely doubt that Ian would whoop during his songs because he isn't an arse.

wasnt an arse...

Talking of the illustrious Ian (r.i.p) how do you think you would react to his erratic dancing now days, and did you prefer it to Barneys "BARNEY WIGGLE IT" (watch cities in the park and listen to the girl in crowd!!)
