Low-Life packaging?

who else is a huge fan of the packaging in CD version of low-life?! personally i'd argue its their best. i like taking the photos of the band and putting them on the cover of different CDs or taking the new order-rice paper thingie and putting it in other CDs.!

or am i just a goon?

the vinyl is even better!

i think it's their best LP artwork.

YEP! Just a litle anecdote for you: when I bought the CD version (Factory release, please!) I gave my vinyl copy to a cousin of mine!

Couldn't agree more. If you take off the tracing paper it looks cooler too.

I have the CD & have over the years swapped the photo showing at the front. Has been Hooky for quite a while now (sorry Steve! ;) )

I broke the jewel case for my lowlife, but the inside pictures are fine. Mine came with 4 seperate pictures on square cards. Do most people have these, because I have seen some versions with just a regular CD insert. Anyhow, sometimes I'll take one and put it on my bulletin board in my cubical, and someone always asks "Who's that!?" I say "Gillian Gilbert." They say, "Who?!" I say "She's the keyboardist from New Order." They say, "New Order?! Weren't they that Nazi cult band?"

Long pause.

They say, "I like Jethro Tull!"

I say, "How 'bout that."

I don't know the others, but mine is the Factory original CD release with the 4 separate pictures. The artwork is the same as in the vinyl release. I saw sometime ago a London re-release with no Steve picture on the sleeve, just the white tracing paper with Get Ready's red bar (sacrilege!)

Actually this is the CD I have... The red line from Get Ready is actually from an advertising paper presenting all the NO CDs reissued by WB (here in France all the NO albums - and JD too - have been reissued when took possession of London Records, and all the reissued CDs had this little paper in them). But behind this paper, there was the 4 well-known photos, so you can drop the ad paper and put your favorite member picture instead... just as described in this thread !

My rice paper sleeve for the vinyl has disintegrated :(

I'm not a fan of fancy pants packaging of any kind though. Just give me the music, in a box that won't fall apart, that's all I ask for.

Easily the best, but you still may be a goon, I don't have enough info to answer that.

Remember kids, the CD re-release of Low Light has the default typeface 'Courier' instead of the Helvetica intended original.

With that in mind the CD artwork is flawed, and as a result, is a shambolic reminder of the exemplary Saville original encasing the bands finest work to date (except TMFeet on The Republican ... of course).

In fact, it's the album that caught my eye at the local record shop when it was released ( I kinda dont bother much about NewOrder when Blue Monday was out eventhough I quite liked that song ....)

Well, I have 5 CD versions of LOW-LIFE...

1. Original Factory CD with 4 separate photocards and car carry case,
2. Aussie released CD with 4 seperate photos but printed on soft paper ( skint-flint Aussies )
3. USA released CD with LOWLIFE title next to Stevie.
4. Aussie 1990 re-issue with soft booklet of 4 photos stapled together ( damn...no taste )
5. Current re-issued CD with that dumb no-frills lettering ( as Huntsman mentioned )
6. Original Aussie LP with tracing etc....
7. USA LP with obi-style tracing strip
8. Aussie LP with 3 signatures and Barney's markings on Steve's face and vice-versa ( they were tossing my LP around for a bit of fun during the Sydney in-store signing )

Seeing as "Low Life" is my all time fave NO album anyway, it's fitting that I have more versions of that particular item than the other albums ... all five are Factory originals (except the reissued vinyl one which must be of Italian origin, I think).

However, I refused to fork out again for the mid-price/re-issued London versions of the CDs just for completeness sakes, and especially the one for "Low Life" because of the shoddy lack of quality control regarding the typography, pointed out elsewhere. That completely ruins it doesn't it?? Each time I see it on the racks like that it makes me shudder! No thanks!

I know 2 different album covers, the vinyl version (which everybody knows) but i just saw the CD version which is completly different, it has postcards in it (buy it).

But who else knows that the limited Box edition of the cassette version also has four postcards but with COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PHOTOS of the band members?

I bought my copy at Vinyl Revival in Manchester a few years ago for £10. I'm very glad about that cos I never got it when it was first issued in 1985.
