Sorry if this has been done before. I actually really like this album, I love Dreams Never End, ICB, Doubt even here. I know quite a few of you feel this album is unlistenable, too much like JD. I alway felt Movement was a nice transition album from JD to PCL.

I really like it, kind of the darkness before the dawn of the PCL era. Chosen Time is a great track, love the drumming and that trippy ending.

I've been listening to it a lot more lately and it is definitely growing on me. My favourites would be DEH, DNE and The Him.

I'm siding with Ahmad here...has been growing on me more and more lately...but Chosen Time is the bomb!
Movement was the last New Order LP I bought, and the last CD too. I was so used to Blue Monday/Perfect Kiss style, so it took me years to really appreciate that strange songs.
But, some time ago I burned my personal NewOrder box in CD-Rs. The first CD "THERE IS NO END TO THIS - 1981-1982" is the CD that I play almost every week, it's amazing.

Excellent mate; its a pity they didn't ask you to do Retro instead of Miranda Sawyer or John McCready.
Truth is one of my all time favourite tracks - dripping with atmosphere, the electronic pulsing beats and sinister keyboards vocals make it classic New order of that time. The album as a whole is much underrated.

Great album, it only seems tame when compared with the dizzying heights that were still to come.
It's one of their most coherent LPs I reckon. There's nothing on it that disturbs the general flow of the music. The whole thing can be easily listened to in one sitting, even if it does make for somewhat grim listening at times. It must have been horribly difficult to make (and NO have said so) so full marks under the circumstances.
I don't really view it as a transition LP any more - PCL is the real transition between JD and NO (I can see an interesting discussion coming out of that one) - rather a brave attempt to try something new that didn't work out quite right.
It's not a transition LP, it's an LP of New Order trying to be a natural progression from Joy Division but not knowing how to at that stage. It took a snowball down a neck and a DMX to make that change into reality.

Agreed, a terrific start but there best was DEFINATLY still yet to come!!!!

Movement is a great album, very underrated.
Not a massive fan of Movement at all. Then again, only last Friday when I was compiling all my New Order records and Cd's, I put Movement on for a change, it doesnae get played a lot, but when it's on, it's not as bad as you always believe it's gonna be. Standouts fer moi DNE, Truth and Senses. As fer the compiled collection, I'll do a Hubertinio tomorrow.

Not strictly speaking true. Mesh and C&W were written in August 1980, before half of Movement. EGG was written May 81, Temptation September 81. The evolution through those nine months of 1981 was quite breathtaking, with Denial and Doubts Even Here being added to the set in March/April 81, and Hurt late summer 81.

I have also compiled a disc of Early Neworder that i titled In Transition and it ranges from Movement to PCL (Leave Me Alone, AOC)...i used the Something Wild edit of Temptation to make room for more tracks but basically the same list as yours. It really helps to understand the early years when the highlights of the first 3 years are compiled together and listened to on one disc. I would add Chosen Time to the list and my version includes the Peel Session version of ICB and Turn the Heater On.
The first album had to be something. Just like the first step after being hit by a car. The creative force behind the band was eliminated without warning. For me it is their first step back into the sun. I love the drumming on this album. Vocals are the weakest part but what lacked in quality was made up in lyrics. Peter's bass begins to take prominence. Proabably the last real guitary album of Barney's.
ICB is my favorite, DNE second fave. DNE was a great choice for the first song--first song on the first album since Ian's death--what a statement, counter point to Insight. And the drums and jam on Denial!!
I've always liked Movement, but I know that probably is the weakest NO album. Although It has greatest peaks...like DNE or Senses.
