Best gig I ever missed

I love that that little historic part of the site. Today's historic fact is a JD gig in a club called Doornroosje in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. I grew up a mere 300 yards from that place and I missed that concert in 1980. I can be excused. I was only 9 years old and had just recently discovered my parents' Beatles, Police and Pink Floyd albums. When I got into The Order and JD years later, someone told me JD played in Doornroosje years before. From then on, every visit to that club was special: legends had visited it. Even now I find it hard to believe that one of the Best Bands In The Universe had played a small club in a insignificant Dutch provincial town. It was truly the best gig I ever missed.

More's the pity, no tape has ever surfaced.

I've got a good Sisters of Mercy bootleg from there in 1984 (great set, including a very rare version of Fix) if you want a copy.

There are some songs from the 'Dutch tour' on Les Bains Douches.

I was amazed to see that mr. Eldridge is playing in The Netherlands, Germany and Poland this spring. Is this one of those best of retro come back things, or does he have any new material?

best gig ever missed....

i did the mini-tour in oct 86....b-ham,malvern,london t&c...i then had tickets for the royal albert hall gig two nights later....but i had to miss out due to some problems at home...safe to say i was gutted...i have heard mixed reports of the gig...but to see them at that venue during that period would have been very good...i managed the hacienda gig which finished the tour off...but missing the rah gig stil pisses me off now...

I got there, by the skin of my teeth. It was my first day at University, and I set the tone by bunking off lectures to see the Order instead !!!! Wasn't that great a show to me, but Jarvo and co liked it I think.

i would've loved to see the Joy Division Preston gig, sounds like chaos.

Both were classed as 'warm-up' gigs, and were announced late in the day.

I think the Coronet gig was only announced in the NME the day before it happened (a Thursday) as a warm-up for Brixton, and the T&C gig was a late announcement for the RAH, perhaps only 2 weeks beforehand whereas I'm sure the RAH was announced more than 2 months in advance.

Yeah that sounds about right I have a feeling that I did know about the T&C but lack of finances and the fact I was staying in Bromley probably deterred me.Strange really as after Finsbury 87 walked all round London just waiting for the first bus to Leeds,same for tenth summer in manc.

another missed gig with ticket in wallet...this time for transport reasons was the doncaster rotters gig in 85..this one was very good much to my annoyance...i made the macclesfield gig the night after....

my bro went to the donny gig...anyone out there in attendance....benny???

For some reason I managed to miss the comeback Apollo gig in '98, the 2 gigs over that festive period and Reading Festival!!

Believe it or not I never found out that they were on.

Though by this time I had stopped reading the music press, didn't have access to the internet and it had been so long that I thought they wouldn't be back.

I wish I had got to more gigs in the 85-86 period but when you're 17 you tend not take things so seriously and I was only earning £27 a week.

I was only there because my mate knew the support band, The Beloved (and that's how I got to know them). Great set, Barney was bollocksed on Pernod, pretty lively atmosphere. I remember throwing up fairly early on in the evening, and having some wanker stub a fag out in my hair.

Pizda, you should remeber that the best gig you missed was the debacle in Cornwall, not even a refund!

i remember speaking to a mate who attended the rah gig...and he said it was that packed and hot in the standing "well"...that people were being hosed down from beyond the stage barriers...it might have been a tad more reserved in the top boxes...but it was mayhem down below as ever in them days!!!!....were you sitting or standing..benny??

I traded up a ticket in the Gods for a seat in the lower most circle then hopped over into the standing area when they came on.It always tended to be mayhem in those days irrespective of the calibre of the gig.I seem to remember the sound quality was shite which I was a bit surprised about.Think it's been upgraded since.I know this was for Benny but I thought I'd reply anyway.

I had tickets up in the gods for this one as well but we managed to sneak down into the orchestra pit without getting our tickets checked.

I remember they came on stage quite early for those days as well. I asked someone about 8-ish what time Happy Mondays, the support act, were on and they had already played!
