I implore you all to destroy the shoddy boil on the bum of Substance that was Sub-culture ;)

I'd like to see the back of Shellshock/cock first before Sub-Culture/Dub.

Confused instrumental...the worst NO instrumental.

I'm gonna have to go with Shellshock. Never really liked it.

Confusion it was for me, although it coulda been any one of a few others. Listened to Shellshock again recently, it's growing on me (like some kinda malignant fungus).

definately the Substance mix of "Subculture," absolutely THE WORST NEW ORDER SONG EVER!!! :barf: i totally agree with Peter Saville's decision of refusing to design a sleeve for the 12" single.

i like NO instrumentals. it hink "Kiss of Death" is great. So is "The Beach." they both read as extensions of the regular versions, especially "Kiss of Death." it really shouldn't be considered an instrumental, the structure varies from "The Perfect Kiss," you can't sing along to it. "Thieves Like Us" instrumental is OK. But i think "Confusion" instrumental is also great. i love the sound of it, its very "New York" of the time (think Afrika Bambaata's "Looking for the Perfect Beat."). i could imagine some kids rapping along with "Confusion" instrumental. :)

SubCulture - are you guys freakin' deaf? Gimme a break, voting for Sub Culture with things like confusion instrumental, shellcock, shellshock and the beach still on this list! Don't give me this "you can't know NO without seeing them live" and then vote like this. Picking Sub Culture at this point in the poll demonstrates to me that you don't know squat about what NO songs are good.

I cannot believe that I actually agree with you...part of what you say anyway. I think that Subculture is a great pop dance song with darkly funny lyrics.

Shellshock and Shellcock should go first...they are a victim of their own evil sin.

wow, that's pretty harsh, innit? anyways, its not that people hate Subculture. i think its a great song, i love the version on LowLife, but i think the remixed 12" that appears on Substance is just awful, and i think a lot of NO fans would agree with me. besides, people have their own opinions, and that's really hard to change even though someone doesn't necessarily agree with them. that's why we have people who listen to Backstreet Boys and watch American idol. :)

I'm not saying it should win, I'm just shocked that people are voting for it this early - I wouldn't even put it in the top 10, but it's not the 3rd worst song on Substance.

i can't understand this dislike for 'subculture'. the 'substance' remix is brilliant! i probably prefer it to the 'low-life' version, actually.... seems i'm practically alone on this one. :(

Confusion

This song has teased me for years because I couldn't find the original version on CD, and I loath the "new version".

Bringing this back to the top of the page. Is no one posting because of techincal errors?

Confusion instrumental. I've voted for it on day 1, and I'll keep voting untill I see the last of it.

I don't understand why people who voted for Subculture didn't vote for Dubvulture first . I like Subculture, I don't like Dubvulture, and it seems logical to me that people who don't like Subculture would hate Dubvulture even more.

I'm with you Agent Wood. There are things about that remix of Sub Culture that I do not like at all, but there is plenty that I also absolutely love about it (particularly the bass guitar playing and some other aspects), its one of the least New Order sounding New Order records, it stands on its own, but I actually like it, and I do, for the most part, like it more than the original version (or at least the last 75 seconds or so of the original version). I guess we're in the minority in regards to this.

Interesting notes on Confusion. Essentially I hate both versions, the first one because the vocals are dog bleep and it sounds a bit silly, and the Substance version just sounds like pure 80's cheese, it sounds so much like '87 that its embarrasing (much like Shell Shock is like frozen in time to '86). I guess thats the difficulty with being on the vanguard of the dance music scene, sometimes you can create immensely powerful timeless music like She Loves You, Be My Baby, or Do You Believe in Magic and then sometimes your music is locked in time and forever labled cheese (pretty much everything disco and lots of Michael Jackson and Solid Gold Material from the 80's), for me, New Order songs like True Faith, Blue Monday and BLT can't be locked down, but songs like Shell Shock and Confusion are very much locked into their time and scene, and simply haven't aged well. Like Red Wine, Chateau Lafitte may be designed to age well, but Boons Farm isn't, and thus the same is true of BLT in comparison to Shell Shock.
