Reading 89 - Who was there ?

I was listening to the '89 Reading gig in the Tours & Concerts section and I was amazed. I never heard or seen a tape of a NO order show that rocked that much. And what a setlist !

Were some of the old fans there at the time ?

This was going to be my first New Order gig: we had it planned for months, but two days before the lad who was supposed to be driving us down split up with his long-term girlfriend and was "too upset" to travel to some "poxy pop festival".

I was fifteen, adored the band, and was so pissed off it was untrue. And if I'd known it'd be four years until they played again people would have REALLY suffered. And the fuckers got back together less than a month later (they're married now!).

I'm surprised this show doesn't get mentioned more often: recordings of the gig sound fantastic, and the reviews at the time (which I read tearing my hair out) were glowing, to say the least....

When you listen to "Blue Monday" for instance, then, at least, they were trying to do something out of it, experiment with it.

Yours is a pretty sad story, anyway...

I can't top that girlfriend story but a few of my best mates went and said it was the BEST NO gig. they'd been to... and around that time they used to follow them around so they'd seen a few. Next to this gig the S.E.C.C. in '88 was almost as great, most notable for the playing of Mr. Disco.

Evidently this Reading gig had some magical atmosphere felt throughout the audience? - mind you, my mates are a bit biast... so am I.

Klumpy, Martin's story at least had a happy 'marriage' ending.. even if he never got to the gig. Anyway, for THE BEST live Blue Monday Buster, check out Wembley Arena 1989... I've got this fucker on tape and it is absolutely stunning. Far better and creatively more imaginative than the poxy 1998 Reading Festival effort.

Not to be too pessimistic but I wonder : would they be able to pull out such a show nowadays ?

I missed this one as well, being young and in love (as you do), I decided to go inter-railing with my then girlfriend instead.

Strangely my current girlfriend was at this festival and only realised she'd actually seen the Order before when we were going thru some old things after moving into our new flat and she came across the programme.

It must be fate...

I missed out on seeing NO at Preston Guildhall in about 1984, fell out with the lad who's brother was going to drive us and didn't get to see them until Reading '93 that was definitely a top performance aswell.Hunter I know we're getting a Pacha in the U.K. but thought only Ibiza had a Space.

Klumpy, no, the pinnacle of New Order has ended. Despite the fact that Getting Things Ready IS as good as any previous work a band can never recapture their glory days... no matter how hard they try. In the same way Madonna has lost her initial appeal... you know, when you used to have a wank over her tits every night... whereas now its only occassional weeks.

Discoid, I hope you've framed that programme that your lass has. What a beautiful piece of lit. to adorn your walls... better than that tennis tart scratching her arse anyhow.

yeah went to that one - my second gig. the one where hooky set fire to his bass & the show was dedicated to "the chef" who would have thought they were such huge muppet fans!

As for the much-rumoured "special atmosphere", I've been told by various attendees from the Manc region that this was largely due to some seriously high-quality MDMA that was doing the rounds that weekend: a chemical treat that the band (supposedly) indulged in also. Don't suppose it improved The Mission's set, though.

Hooky had "Free Jeff the Chef" written on his amp and I think he also made some speech about the him being in jail for trying to give some pleasure to people (i.e. dealing but not too sure). I was at all three Reading performances and I think this one just shaves it over '98, though the Divvies material was welcome.

I was there, and the bootleg was on sale the following morning....thats what I call service!!

And a little less of the "old" if you don't mind Mr Klompkes!!!

I too was at Reading '89, '93' and '98. '89 Was definately the best, first time I heard them play Your Silent Face (I took a Rolling Stone quality picture of Barney playing his harmonium (sic?) bathed in blue light, lost the fucking negatives now).

Anybody at GMEX '88 (Mondays, ACR, New Order). Now there was a gig where Ebeneezer Goode had definately been to see Barney.........

Hello Jake the Snake... the G-Mex '88 gig was seen by a great many of us here in the Orderline and it is an oft talked about subject. Needless to say it is popular opinion that this gig was the stuff of legends and could well have been the pivotal moment at which house music peaked, drugs were consumed like pringles and fellow man linked arms and pogo'd across halls.

the band were definately on form and obviously pumped well full of drugs... as were ACR and the Mondays.

Something I found intersting was that Arthur 'the grizzly bear' Baker who is DJ'ing before the gigs nowadays played a set very reminiscent of the records played prior to the bands coming on at G-Mex '88. It would seem that the circle was now complete.

I was there. And i'll never forget that concert for the rest of me life! It was magical, unfuckingbelievable. And what was even better: the next day you could already buy tapes of the concert. Brilliant quality. This was my second time i saw New Order, first time was in i think 1985 in Rotterdam. Reading 89 is forever in my memorie as the best i ever saw.
