susannah hoffs was definitely the only female in the bangles. one of the others was named michael, for christ's sake.

ok, the actress who played the mom in the waltons' was named michael learned, but still.

I was never much of a DM fan except for Enjoy the Silence. Did like Martin Gore's skirts, though... But I like NO better any day.

I have both DM's Greatest Hits & Violator. Just Can't Get Enough & Enjoy the Silence are (for me) classics.

I have everything I can lay my greedy hands on by Neworder & Joy Division.

And that, I think, just about sums it up.

I like DM, they have 8 or 9 true classics, 3 great albums and an effective live show.

NO have 4 incredible albums and 3 good ones...dozens of classics, a place in the history of music, etc.

So, the answer is clear...

For most of my life, been a NO & DM fan. Can't compare, really. Both different. Both class. Just my opinion. Will love both sounds always.

I have to fess up and say I've liked the Mode since day one (I have virtually all of their stuff right up to Violator, when I think they lost the plot a little).

You can't compare the two : they both stand for completely different things. Okay, both may nod knowingly at Kraftwerk (NO certainly did with Your Silent Face, after all, hence it's working title KW1), but New Order are 50/50 rawk/plinky plonky, DM are 95% plinky plonky/5 % rawk (when Martin gets his geetar out).

There's no comparison : The 'peche were four Basildon boys interested in make-up, girls and songs about lurve. Okay, they got moody in around 1983 (Construction Time Again) and got a bit into metal-bashing, leather mini-skirts and depressing slow songs sung by Martin Gore in his school boy soprano. They're way toooooo serious. And Dave Gahan just sorta turned into some rock monster when the band finally broke into the US, with heroin overdoses and Gawd knows what else.

I like the two, but for completely different reasons. NO are just so much more about what us ordinary folk are about : drinking, having a good boogey, a fight and a laugh. Depeche Mode are about cocktail parties, arena culture and having their heads firmly up their own arseholes. Both Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder knew when it was time to quit...

Of course if u ask the question here, your going to get people saying new order.

Both do stand for things completely different, in terms of making music, New Order aren't as structured in what they do and are more of an indie band (though not in the wanker sense, in that their not afraid of popularity). Depeche Mode are definitely more structured in what they do, which is not a bad thing.

As long as it works, thats all that matters. They embraced making the big league, and good luck to them. Influential, definitely, but again in a different way to new order.

Hey, blame the parents.. in french, Michel is for men, Michelle for women, so we indeed know women called "Michäelle" (pronounce me-kah-el), so I'm not surprised.

I've seen them live and I have 2 tapes of them, so I knew them back then ;)

As for Depeche Mode, it's Electronic music, so it's considered in the same category of 50% of New Order's material... but even though I consider overall Depeche Mode did some albums that are better than all JD/New Order albums (don't flame me yet!), I consider that the consistency that New Order has is incredible, even Get Ready is a good album, there is no bad New Order album, it ages well, and it doesn't have many bad tracks...

Get Ready is far superior than Ultra & Exciter together, that's for sure...

BTW, David Gahan is releasing a solo album this summer.. I wonder how it will sound!

Good balanced view of things Spotnik. New Order are in better shape now than DM, and I think thats almost soely due to Alan Wilder no longer being in DM. I do like Ultra but not Exciter. But around 1993 or so compare Songs of Faith and Devotion with Republic, and SOFAD gets my vote hands down.

New Order have been much more consistent, I mean as much as I love DM I think 4 out of their 10 albums are ordinary to complete dredge, but the other 6 are very good to brilliant. It seems that when they nail what their doing its great, otherwise it can be a disaster.

Man, I think if there's a DM album that doesn't have any bad song is Speak & Spell . It's a very very weird album, i can´t remember ANYTHING similar. Nor even those odd&old (but good) Kraftwerk stuff. New Life, Dreaming of Me, Puppets, are all different, underground.

you have to realize that in the 1980s in the US if you were into anything remotely electronic-based, depeche mode were it--particularly on the west coast. to give you an idea of their enormous popularity, during the 'music for the masses' tour in 1988 they played LA twice, then went back to the city at the end of the tour and played the rose bowl, which is roughly the same size as the nou camp. hence the tendency of many yanks to lump DM and NO together--less to do with musical similarity than DM saturation of the whole 'new wave' scene in many places. it seems strange to me to talk about them in the same breath nowadays, but there you go.

didn't New Order start the double remix single releases which Depeche mode copied, and the remaking of Blue monday1988, which Depeche Mode copied with remaking Everything Counts? i wasnt a big Mode fan at all so maybe i got them out of order...?

Depeche Mode holds little feeling for me personally, i find them (it)very very shallow and pretentious...

sure, they had some influence because they were the most well known synth band of the mid 80s overall, they were often the first synth-like band people heard, but they are no Kraftwerk or New Order or Caberet Voltaire or even Front 242, no real influence on house or techno other than they were well known to use the common synth equipment of the time, they just used them first on record cause they had the record company money to buy the latest synths.

Oh God, not this one again. I propose we start comparing some more interesting bands: how about Marillion vs Def Leppard?

the video for 'pour some sugar on me' was filmed in denver and some of my junior high school friends were at that show. i remember the day afterwards, half the kids in school sported a 'hysteria' tour shirt. rock on.

I really love the S&M through DM, an overall better dressed band but hence the name. Bunch of great songs but nothing compared to New Order. Their music speaks for themselves.
