New Order v. Depeche Mode...

Depeche Mode are more influential on groups such as The Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails rather thsn house music. They showed how electronic music can be used in a rock context, like they themselves did so well on Songs of Faith And Devotion. Also very influential over a lot of industrial music like Nitzer Ebb and such. Placebo are another group influenced by Depeche Mode.

New Order are much more instrumental on the dance scene, but they produced a lot more dance music than DM, who people think obviously are a dance band because they use electronics, which is not the case.

I think both bands are great. My personal favorite of the two is new order, for a variety of reasons. Some include the lyrical content, the wider variety of musical styles employed, and the "undergroundness" that new order have always refused to lose, even at the most high profile points of their career. Of course there are also good points to depeche mode. The D.M. live show is truly fantastic, their live sound is superb, and they are very consistent live. N.O. on the other hand, is famous for their inconsistency from show to show. (personally, I quite like that. Seems to keep it real.) For me, it's apples and oranges, really.

depeche mode and smashing pumpkins?!? can't see the similarity there at all. i think billy corgan would mention lemmy as one of his influences before he would martin gore.

sorry to spoil your fund but he actually does like DM, and they did cover Never Let Me Down Again as well.
