Ian Curtis Buried
Has been explained on here quite a few times already & is prob in the FAQ but happy to elaborate.
This is the common answer, but how accurate is this? Has anyone connected with the band ever commented on this? I mean, Ian wasn't properly buried, but cremated first, wasn't he? Do you still say, in English, that he's buried then? Because here in Belgium, we say that one is either buried, or cremated. We don't say, he was cremated and then buried.

That's not a grave just a memorial stone, there are thousands of them in the Macclesfield crematory.

The stone is smaller than it looks in the photographs, it's so small that I actually felt tempted to nick it. :D

Of course he is, only that can explain his awful solo career. :D

and what did they do with the ashes?
"Buried", though, doesn't have to necessarily mean physically interred. It's also a figure of speech for putting something in the past.

Granted, but I've yet to see fully convincing evidence that ICB really stands for 'Ian Curtis Buried'. And if such evidence really exists, I'll be very disappointed, as I think it's a stupid phrase.
Hooky was quoted as saying it stood for:
'Ian Curtis - Bastard'
(for ruining the prospects of a Joy Division US Tour)
See reactions to Curtis' suicide in the music press and various books, where Hooky says his first reaction to the news was, 'Bastard. We were gonna go off on this tour and finally make it to America. Then he does that. Selfish bastard.'

Yeah, things like, "he should have been on a bleeding plane."
I never saw the quote before, but even if it's apocryphal I like it much better. Thanks!
