I think the US Someone Like You promo CD with all mixes is pretty rare too... the only place known where you have the Gabriel & Dresden remixes on CD as far as I know.

The Way of Life US 12" Promo must be, I still cry when I see mine.. broken!

If you like The Happy One... I have a copy (Thanks Old Blue, that was you right? ;) )

Don't know how limited it is, as it was sent to all Inrockuptibles' subscribers in France...

The rarest one I know about is FACT300, the Republic pre-mix cassette. Contains mostly instrumental mixes of the tracks that went on to form the album.

"About 5" were made.

I think I would actually kill someone to get my hands on one.

How about this "Area One Live in LA"-Promo CD-R ???

It was told by former Warner Media Directory that this is a bootleg recording... they put a Warner design on it, and it was only for their own use...

So it's as good as any bootleg you can find out there..

How do you define rare?

By numbers? (objecive approach)

In that case, I would add:

  • The BBC Transcription discs, especially #623 (Reading Festival on CD). The Transcription discs are very high quality live recordings that BBC oly sells to other radio stations. A very, very limited number is made. I've heard around 20, but would guess up to 50.

  • Acetates. Especially the non-released DreamsNeverEnd/Truth and OnlyTheLonely (aka. Ectasy) actetates.

  • Metallic testpress of TPK (7LYN15645-1) with an alternate remix. One copy exists.

  • The red vinyl version of BM from NZ. Can't remember exactly the numbers but I believe only one or two copies exists. Anyone?

  • Argentinian testpress of Technique with withdrawn cover.

  • The 3:20 version of Brutal. Less than 5 CDRs made by London. They were recalled.

  • Some of the later CDR promos. For example, Various 7" Versions, Get Ready "Not Final", TF2k1 "Morel's Mixes", 60mph David Kahne Recall 2 (2-4 copies).

  • Palatine promo, 75 copies.

  • Lots of other promos. E.g. CA CD promo of Technique, TECH-1.

  • Not to mention the non-music items, such as the 12" Ruler, TF paperweight, Little Lewie, and the TBTHOG (soccer) football (30 were made).

Now, if rarity is not defined by the numbers, but by a mix of numbers and scarceness of tracks and format, other items would be added (IMHO):

  • Translucent vinyl of Movement.
  • Vida Pobre (Low-Life LP from Argentina)
  • Substance DAT
  • BM misspressed 12" b/w LWTUA
  • Tutti Frutti
  • CD versions of From Brussels With Love and A Quick Neat Job.

There are, of course, a lot more items to search for...

How do you mean? compiling the list? or using other sites to get info?

Maybe we could keep this list in addition to the discography, make it strictly vinyl, CD and cassette possibly including acetates.

I'm starting to think many people here would like to be able to compile their collection from the discography here...

A kind of shopping cart, then save it to your profile, accessible from the profile.. this way, if someone is looking for an item, he could see who has it in his collection...

This way, we can see what's rare for people online! in the discography you can see that x people own this item, etc..

alas mick I have no more than before

only the run 2 7 & 12 (though have a couple of the run2 12"s) substance box cassette & the gatefold substance (cant remember my number) blt gatefold (withdrawn wasn't it?) 7" & retro UK 5 disc.

technique on DAT must be quite limited & surely the cdv singles are rarer than retro?

Think I've got those BM's Murv (although not to sell) - could you describe them? - have you heard of the acetate of BM, I haven't a clue where that came from.

What's the BM with white sleeve with red diagonal slash - the 12" on 10"? (or 7").

Anyone got the 7" with orange and black label 'Dreams Never End'. A picture disk interview thing?

I wish I hadn't put my Low-Life inserts on the wall - never mind.

What's a Low-Life poster worth these days? - is this rare? - what about True Faith poster (the blue background)?

He, he. I'm sure NOOL's discography is more up to date than http://www.niagara.edu/neworder, though an update is in progress... Coming to a web-site near you. Summer 2003. Besides, I was under the impression that your objective is somewhat different than the niagara site - whose objective is to support collectors.

No. The one in the list is the Polish 7" promo, cat# DS-25A. A scan of that promo (basically just a purple-ish sleeve) will be in the next update of the Discography @ http://www.niagara.edu/neworder ...

Originally posted by Murv Ooo er, the big man himself.......my what a fine New Order Discography.:D

I'm not really that big, though I reach 6 feet... While I may have a substantial collection, it is not in the same division as Mr. WiM and some other collectors around the world - they know who they are. I'm just an infoholic putting information together.

Regarding the rarity-list, basing it on known quantities is a little bit misleading.

For example, the Confusion 2k2 promo may be very rare but coming in at #8 is a little bit optimistic. There are other promos that are more limited, but since the exact quantity is not known, any numbers have been left out from the discography entries.

Also, does anyone really consider the Retro boxes to qualify for the list over the top-20 rare items? Especially given the release of the bonus-CD as a promo.

There are much rarer items out there, many of them never released such as a acoustic version of 60mph with David Potts on piano/keyboard (sorry all Monaco-haters), apparently only a CDR in max 6 copies. There is also a David Tenaglia remix of World that was never released, but put on a in-house tape. There is a reason of course why some items are never released...

Interesting topic though.

Rarity is a very subjective concept. For me, I can find the flicker book more easily than a CD version of From Brussels With Love (which I finally found...)

BTW: I just checked my database, and the Argentinan testpress of Technique with withdrawn cover was apparently made in 10 copies.

It was directed to Murv.. well, I'd love to have a full complete thing, but I just don't have the patience.. the idea was to do a multimedia discography too, with many links it it and statistics, which of course, is just for the fun of it.

90% of the stuff in there comes from your site anyways ;) So I have no fame in that one, you and Dennis Remmer did a tremendous job discography-wise...

One rare thing was the tape that had the Elegia 17 mins version before it was released with Retro...

Don't know which tape it was, but it does exist since we had that for 2 years!

When was this suddenly decided? The promo 7" has been referred to on discography sites and by hardcore collectors for years.

Yeah, I know BUT

  • When it was in the charts, Radio 1 always played the 12", if there was a 7" I'm certain they would have used it.
  • None of the big 4 internet sites are able to provide timings for this supposed edit, or more importantly a PICTURE.
  • I've been asking at every collectors fair I've attended for the last 15 odd years, and all I ever get is blank looks.
  • In Vol 2 of the Cuttings book, there is a piece by an Alan Jones dated Apr 2 1983 discussing why Blue Monday appeared in the singles chart, which is based on 7" sales. And I quote..."a quick call to Factory confirmed that no such disc exists".

So all the evidence seems to suggest...

I'm not referring to an official 7" release, just a limited release promo. As you mentioned, it always cops an inclusion in the major discogs, with reason. Perhaps Mr Ivarsson can shed some light here. I myself have seen it for sale on GEMM in the past for upwards of USD$150, although I was never able to 100% corroborate its existence with the seller. I also recall Jonathon Scott referring to it (on these very pages I think) and he is particularly cluey on the older gear. Mr WiM is also of the belief that it exists.

I remain sceptical of its existence but aren't yet convinced either way.

Promo or regular release, makes no difference. We're talking about a UK 7" of BM. Don't get me wrong, dC. I'm not poo-pooing it's existence entirely. The point I was trying to make is that everyone thinks it exists, but I have yet to find anyone that can confirm it exists.

Like yourself, I remain sceptical. I'd love to be proved wrong one day.

I would probably class the testpress as a testpress and not a promo. Not all testpresses were used as promos - something that is quite common today, probably because the need of checking the quality is not that big.

I'm not sure what the diff really is. I have the regular one right next to me. The testpress is on another continent, so I can't check. However, I will be visiting the second half of my collection in June so I'll check if I can remember... I will probably also do some scans of items not scanned yet.

He, he. A hotly debated topic. Ask the Q on the Factory list and you'll get some quite passionate answers. No one seems to own it, but that doesn't prove that it doesn't exists. No one seems to be able to prove that it doesn't exist either.

Personally, I think it does exists but was never used as a promo - similar to the JP 7" promo that never made it since the apparently NO didn't like the edit. Now, the JP 7" promo does exists for sure.

The reason it is in the Discography @ http://www.niagara.edu/neworder is because it was listed in a quite extensive discography kept by fernando (the man, the myth, the legend...) His criteria for including any item was that someone had it. Who he knew who had it (say it loud 10 times...), I don't know. He does credit Eddie Graham (US), Mark Buckwalter (US), and Peter Hook (UK). It's possible that one of them has a copy.

Until someone else has proven it wrong, it will be listed.

Almanso, Argentinian NOOLer, tells me the 1st issue doesn`t have the words "New Order-Technique" on the cover. Does the vinyl have a white lable?

Damn, I'm going to have to start scanning my rarities for this site too...

I think the COLLECTED promo box set from London is pretty rare too... which contains Temptation 98, which is now available through Retro though...

Question is, Sebastien told me there were difference between both mixes, so anyone noticed that?

And the True Faith 2001 Remixes is not an easy thing to buy either...

I have to get back to you on that one. In July...

Unless someone here has the answer.

Unless the difference lies in the levels of the mix (e.g., louder hi-hat, bass to the left, etc.), there is no diff between Collected and Retro.

And the True Faith 2001 Remixes is not an easy thing to buy either...

The 2x12" was (is?) quite common on eBay. I have a spare copy (I believe), if anyone's interested.

BTW: Is there any difference between the Philip Steir Club Mix and the Philip Steir Re-Order Mix of TF2k1? I don't have a TT here, so I can't check.

Back to my Roland - not Casio...

how can you prove something doesn't exist though? you can prove it exists by seeing it, but if nobody has seen it does that mean it doesnt exist?

Erhm, yes?! :) Well, what I meant was that it hasn't been included in the discographies because people simply guessed that it existed. Until this day, I haven't hear or met anyone who can prove/convince me that the promo doesn't exist. So right now I have more reliable indicators that the promo exists than I have indicators pointing towards a non-existence.

So far, the strongest indicator for non-existence is the cut in the History Of Cuttings book, though the quote seem to refer to an official 7". That doesn't mean that there might not be a revoked promo somewhere.

What of this Fernando chap, TLV?

He was such a font of back catalog info in days gone. Haven't seen him post on Ceremony for a while, wonder if he still has an active interest.

Interesting guy.

BUT i just don´t know if test press were made. no info about that. another rarity must be the argentinian Substance II vinyl with black sleeve. they´re difficult to find even in Argentina. i saw one for 50 dollars a couple of years ago. don´t know how many copies were made of that. but they were made by a record label "DG Discos" that broke shortly after. it was released by the same date as Technique, on 1989. i bought one a copy the same day i bought Technique. the record company was dead by 1990. so did most of the vinyl productions in Argentina.

i must say that the argentinian Substance 1987 (white) is pretty rare too. just because no "1987" was written. just "Substance". it has translated titles on the vinyl label. it can be found easier, though. more copies were released of that one. as for Vida Pobre, yesterday i was comparing it to the USA edition and it just kicks its ass. excellent sound quality. this was not released by "DG Discos" (poorer sound quality) but by "Buelax". all photographs are "sepia" instead of black and white.

Hey Almanso, is the white Argentinian Substance on four LP's? I thought I read somewhere that it had all the B-sides on vinyl too.

[edit]

Err, ignore that. The black sleeve has the b-sides. That's where the four LP's comes from.

DAT quality is beautiful. If anyone has a player it would be worthwhile taking the bull by the horns and pouring a decent cup of tea whilst enjoying the Technical experience.

DAT (for those who aren't keen) is ordinarily used as a master, used to generate copies for mass consumption (a bit like copying the recipe for vegetable pasties, then replicating throughout The Bakers Oven chain of bakers). So, if you have the DAT, you may be listening to a brighter, more clearer Technique than is available on any other format, including cassette tape.

Digital Audio Tape = yes please.

There seem to be many more Technique DATs than Substance DATs (released as a double-DAT). I would estimate the price to be $40 +/- 15, depending on the climate...

Murv, I have a Technique DAT for trade if you're interested.

Found this track listingDAT: UK 1989 (Factory FACT 275D) 4:42 Fine Time 3:22 All the Way 2:58 Love Less 4:29 Round & Round 4:44 Guilty Partner 4:26 Run 4:20 Mr. Disco 5:14 Vanishing Point 5:13 Dream Attack Blue Monday Bizarre Love Triangle True Faith State of the Nation Don't Do It

Don't know exactly where you found this listing, but if you looked at http://www.niagara.edu/neworder you'd've seen that those extra tracks are only on the cassette from Indonesia, not the DAT.

DAT is a nice format. I have a player and have recorded most of my vinyl-only New Order to DAT. These days, CDR is perhaps a little bit more convenient, though noone knows for sure what format will store the info the longest.

For consumers and bootleg-taping, MiniDisc is getting more and more popular.

7.UK 2002 12"Confusion ( WACKT 002 C/D)[Promo 150 Copies W/ Reaction Sheet][Sept promo] 7: I actually got that promo from HMV.co.uk...

Yeah, these have the original vocals on, rather than the re-recorded ones by Barney that featured on the officially released twelve inches and CD single. The running times are the same, and everything else sounds identical, but it's just a different vocal track.

Interesting...must make it more collectable then. I took it out of the top 20, due to unknown quantities of previous WLP`s, maybe it should be reinstated as it is quite rare.

Depends on how the vinyl was mastered: I bet these days it's pressed from the digital master tapes, rather than analogue ones, though I'm not totally sure how these things are done.

The testpress I have doesn`t have writing on the front of the sleeve apart from DG234 in 2mm high black type in a white box with black surround located in the top R.H corner. The back of the sleeve has New Order Technique and titles in english with the other info in spanish. The vinyl has a white lable and has DG 234 and DG 234-B on the run off notation.

Another Argentinian copy I have, which isnt listed in any New Order discography that Ive seen, is the Technique Promo on London/Polygram Catalogue No. 520 011-1 release date 1992. It has New Order Technique on the front of the sleeve and the titles in spanish and english on the reverse. The vinyl has a black lable with difusion venta prohibida stamped on the lable. Does anyone else have one of these?

I have to get back to you on that one. In July...

Unless someone here has the answer.

/T. from my knowdledge there´re two argentinian editions of Technique. one just like the original UK sleeve, and other one with "NewOrder-Technique" written on the sleeve. the first edition was the original one and then they released the second one with the band´s name in order to "let the people know who the band was". i have the first one, because i bought it the first day it was out. i didn´t see another copy of that one since then. the second one you can find it anywhere for 10 pesos (3 US dollars). both releases have red labels on the vinyls, though.

Ok, it's not July yet, but I don't think anyone will mind... Checking my personal collection and the info posted here and elsewhere, this is what I can deduct regarding the AR Technique:

Vinyl:

  • Testpress, white labels with DG 234 A/B written on them. 10 made. The sleeve used is the "clean" sleeve with "DG 234" in upper right corner. Groove notation "DG234A" and "DG234B"
  • Regular release, red labels, groove notation as the testpress
  • Promotional (London) release 1992 (cat# 520011-1 and LADO 2), black labels, tracks listed in spanish and english. Groove notation? Sleeve?

Sleeve:

  • Withdrawn sleeve, like the UK one but with "DG 234" in a black box in upper right corner. Used for testpress and initial copies of the regular release.
  • Regular sleeve, as the withdrawn sleeve but with additional text in black print to the upper right: "Neworder" and "Technique" just below. Used for the regular release
  • Promo sleeve, as the UK one but with "Neworder Technique" to the upper right. "Neworder" in white and "Technique" in turquoise. "PolyGram" down in the left corner. Used for the 1992 promo (London) issue.

So, if anyone have the promo issue for trade, let me know...

The Discography, http://www.niagara.edu/neworder, will reflect this in the next update.

The last 20 or so LIVE BOOTLEGS must be rare and are what most of us would like for Christmas.

Probably have to do with watching Chevy Chases Christmas Vacation again though, it is funny though, those crazy Americans, always a happy ending except in the countries they Bomb.

Yes. Two.

"Two different promotional UK box-sets exist. One box-set contains the LP, CS, signed CD and signed photo. 75 copies were made. The other version came in a plastic bag with the addition of a Regret promo video and T-shirt. 20 copies were made of this set." (as featured in the upcoming New Order Discography update.)

Like many fans and collectors, the passion fades after a while, and one realizes that there's more to life than New Order, testpresses, and the Internet.../T.

Delurking for my quarterly NOOL posting ... :smoker:

T... You've hit a chord with me.

Hats off to you for stating what periodically keeps me from updating the Fac discog (which actually p!sses some people off), and handing Rich Kernin's and my New Order baby over to your good self and Rich to maintain and 'seed' other sites: A Life - in this case wife, son, real job, record label (I took my obsessions to their logical conclusion - see www.trans.com.au)... :uhoh:

I wouldn't say the passion fades - how can it when the Order keep on delivering the goods... rather the priorities change. I also think there are various grades of collector... On a scale of :D to  I'd probably rate a :brow:.

Now... off to track down the sniping f@@ker that decided to bid US$810 for a copy of the Sordide pressing of Atmosphere on Ebay last week. It would have gone to a good home...
:blaster:

Bit of history for you - the earliest incarnations of the New Order discog (pre WWW, emailed to Ceremony and Usenet only) were drawn from our own heads, collections and research but also from early press - not least of which was an excellent article on New Order rarities in Record Collector magazine circa 1991/2 (I think) - and access to (in my case) Factory Australia.

The Factory Discog also started as a correction of the Palatine list, and then expansion to include track information, etc. This one has been great fun and has evolved through lots of contribution from the Fac listers, and numerous ex-Factory artists and co-conspirators who chime in from time to time. I have to say though that I'm more interested in the in-operation Factory / Fac Too information than the stuff that's happened since their collapse(s). Many have asked why I've never bothered asking for a Fac #. Not sure really, but it might have something to do with maintaining a certain perspective and distance (Australia is about as far from Manchester as you can get), and focussing on appreciation of the music and design rather than any pretence of being 'part' of something that has definitely had its time and place.

When I finish my book on the subject I may change my tune however... :thumb:

G'day to Johnny Giles & the gang.

Essential reading as always. Golden Nuggets like this keep me checking into NOOL.

Any more trips to the UK lined up? That cover band we saw, Re: Order, have proved very popular on here with regular appearances well attended by the London NOOLers. You saw 'em first!

Got a publishing date in mind? a year would do ;)

Hey Dennis,

Good to hear from you. Yes, "changing priorities" is probably what I was going for in my posting.

So it wasn't the Goldmine article that fernando wrote around that time frame (or did he write it for Record Collector? my memory fades...)?

BTW: Version 1.0 (ASCII) of the New Order Discography, as posted on Ceremony, can be found in the credits section of the Discography. I put it there as a historical document... ;)

The Record Collector piece was written by Kevin Whitlock, a big Order fan who clocked up over 60 gigs in the 80s and provided a chunk of the live recordings which made up half of the Retro live CD.

well to be honest after reading the lists posted, the term new order and rare releases really dont make sense. ive been a new order fan since the jd days and not a single track in any of the lists isnt easily available in some form from a retail/high street shop,ie: you can hear it in some form anywhere. live bootlegs excepted. ok ok misprints ,artwork, coloured vinyl ect i can see the interest for a die hard fan but ffs the songs are not rare. you can count on one hand the recorded rare material from new order or should i say half of one hand if you dont count bootlegs.

1.touch tape with mag (video 586)original version, got it 2.hac crimbo flexi (utter crap) ,got it 3.subculture (record mirror giveaway) got it.

now even rarer than anything on any of these lists is something from joy division. its on closer and a video was made for the track, can anyone guess what it is?;)

RARE - for most groups and solo artists it is nearly always
RELEASED tracks but in a certain FORMAT or LABEL that then makes it rare.Of course this is VERY subjective but for me it was not about collecting RARE items per se but just that i liked the different FORMATS and COVERS.Remember too that usually one had NO BLOODY idea if anything was hard to come by and i for one did not know one single person who had any NEW ORDER records apart from my ex-sister in law who had the ALTERNATE CEREMONY which i blagged.PROMOS which could be difficult to get hold of BEFORE the record came out was also difficult before the INTERNET.But now we all find out from DAY ONE what is available and WHEN this has made the joy of searching records out much less fun for me.I think this is the price we pay for GLOBAL SHARING.But as one who has made his collection available to NOOL's to listen to(which IS as good as OWNING and much less hassle)i think that as long as one is not CONNED into paying more than a reasonable price NOW for NEW ORDER there is no harm done.I have never sold any "RARE" and indeed any normal NEW ORDER records but have given away the odd hard to find PROMO of ELECTRONIC or a duplicate i have owned in NOT AS MINTY MINT as my other copy i have kept. But for us OLD TIMERS who could pay £3 tops for a 12 inch i know that if i was starting to COLLECT now it would be expensive.Probably the joy of getting NEW ORDER records as gifts for XMAS and birthdays are my most treasured artefacts. But let's not kid ourselves...it is the original tracks that are the best in most cases, memories from GIGS for the LIVE lovers and the comradeship when meeting fellow NOOL's (but not when you meet me,SHUGZV or MAJOR) that really counts. Cost of records...a few quid. Cost of the NEW ORDER memories ...PRICELESS. And MIKE don't be sneaking around APPLEJAX and following me home to nick my most RARE item....my P45! Regards ROCKET MICK

Just looking at tracks makes the list much different. And it also depends on if you count tracks performed live but not studio-recorded, obscure remixes, and edits of tracks.

I can't comment on live performances, but many DJ subscription service remixes (Hot Tracks, DiscoTech, Art of Mix, Prime Cuts, DMC, etc.) are pretty hard to come by. BTW: The Record Mirror version of Subculture is just a fade-out version of one of Razormaid's remixes.

Other tracks worth a mention is:

  1. the JP 7" version of Blue Monday (pressuming it exits... ;) )
  2. first recording of Ceremony (well, at least it's tricky to find out which one you have... :) )
  3. the alternate remix of The Kiss Of Death (it's on an acetate)
  4. I think there's a rare edit of TPK on some CA promo, but I'm not sure
  5. the 7:59 version of TBTHOG (12" Version) as only found on the JP and GE CDs of Salvation
  6. the ever so slightly different 7" edit of BM88 on the CDV
  7. the Eschreamer mixes of TF94
  8. there may also be some rare remix/edit of BM95 - can't recall where exactly
  9. the different radio edits of Brutal (all shorter than 4 minutes)
  10. some Morel remix of TF 2k1
  11. same goes for some remixes of SLY
  12. The Peter Saville Soundtrack could also become a rarity
  13. and don't forget the various demo-versions, pre-release versions of Get Ready and Republic come to mind. And then there's always the Western Works demo...

Hi All,

So how rare is Video 586 from 1997, I picked it up on CD and 12".

Also got a 12" DJ promo of World (The Price of Love), were there many of these made?

Also have the Republic Era stuff on cassette too, liked the New Order mix of Vicious Circle on there.

(Don't think these have had a mention yet): Was thinking about the Japanese 3" CD singles for Touched and Blue Monday '88? (Nice items) Not seen these for sale much in the last 22 years... Must be pretty rare nowadays but it depends how many were printed.
