i agree; Face Up is as hooky (no pun intended) as it gets. it's so loaded with energy and fire that i think it would have done pretty well as a single. still, there's something about it that i think doesn't make it the best candidate for an A Side. i'm kind of glad it wasn't a single, in some senses. but it's definitely one of my favorite NO songs. :)

I like it too but my vote goes to Brutal which was a one off song and perfect for a come back single to announce they were back.

I've gone for Brutal on this one; it deserves a wider audience than it got. I'd be quite happy to have it clogging up the airwaves instead of the usual rubbish.

I also voted for Brutal. It was so different from the shit they were playing in the late 90's (well most was shit), but not different enough as to be out of place. Perfect single material, would make good for remixing in my opinion.

On another note, Angel Dust was absolutely briliant. It was so.. Weird. But good. Something about the sound just captures my interest. And that one synth part sounds so cool on electric guitar!!

To the starter of this thread: Times Change is a great song, and now that hiphop has kind of exploded, it might do ok in the charts now. But back in '93, I'm not sure it was A-side material. I'm saying this, yet it's one of my favorite songs. Hmm.

In lieu of "Mr. Disco" I choose "Vanishing Point". There's been some unofficial mixes of it already and to think what it'd sound like if the Order remixed a few times, á la "Round & Round".

I totally agree with your synopsis. I also think the record label might have been afraid of Billy Corgan at the time. He was just finished decapitating one of the biggest bands in the states, so I'm sure they were pretty wary about his effect on how the single would do.

Singles in the States just seem like a waste to me, tho. Singles by non pop/r&b bands don't tend to do very well at all, and tend to be overpriced. I could be wrong.. But obsessive fans like us wouldn't mind a cheaper alternative to get harder to find b-sides like player in the league, etc.

Paradise used to get ALOT of play on KROQ in Los Angeles, which is one of the biggest alterna radio stations in the US. Might have been only on their 'flashback' 80s lunch program, but I remembering hearing it many many times when I was in high school.

An interesting thread idea would be. What album songs should have been the singles off of each album? I'd probably have chosen Blue Monday (American Release of PCL) and Age of Consent for PCL (laregly because Your Silent face would be showcasing more of the same, Age of Consent would show another facet of the band, and draw in more of the anti-new wave radio listeners who (thought they) hated synths).

W/Low-life I would have gone w/Love Vigilantees followed by Perfect Kiss (though I'm still trying to figure out how on earth Perfect Kiss failed so miserably as a single). W/Brotherhood I would go with BLT, followed by either Angel Dust or Weirdo. W/Technique I would have released Vanishing Point, and either Dream Attack, Run or Mr. Disco (Dream Attack actually got more run in the bay area radio market than Round and Round, and Fine Time and Run got), w/Republic I would have gone w/Regret, and either Everyone Everywhere, Young Offender, or the lyrically awful World. With Get Ready it would have been Crystal, and At Close Range, w/Turn My Way getting serious attention for the US Market.

You're not alone! It's a terrific but underrated track, which sound particularly good live. Think you'll find Benny's a fan too.

Vanishing Point totally should've seen a single, and maybe Age of Consent also. Angel Dust could've been one too. And Face Up, even though it isn't one of my favorites (except for the beginning), might have been an okay single too.

Don't you think that these albums are actually albums without the singles included on it? So meaning PC&L should have Temptation, Everything's Gone Green & Blue Monday on it, and Movement should have Ceremony/Procession on it? ;)

I don't think so. These songs wouldn't fit on those albums. Just my opinionion, though.

Movement- Dreams never end PCL- Age of consent Low-life- That Marco Pleil song Brotherhood- Paradise Substance- 1963 (why did we had to wait EIGHT years for this?) Technique- Vanishing point Republic- Young offender Get ready- Close range

I've always loved AOC, it might not have stormed the charts but it would've been a great single.

Agree about Face-up, I've always stuck up for this one being the best NO album closer (or pretty damn close, at least), but don't think it would've been a good A-side. Fantastic song all the same

Fun poll, but really, the trick that makes New Order albums good is that there probably is room for 4,5, or 6 singles on each album. Quality over quantity.

More bands should look into this "philosophy"

Went for AOC, but DNE, YSF and All The Way should well have been singles. Could never decide whether it was a good thing that NO carried on the JD tradition of not releasing album tracks (well, for the early years anyway).
