SLOW JAM

Am I missing something here guys - Slow Jam is just a great track and as the lads say "I cant get enough of this" - everybody is slagging it off, the lads have dropped it from the set list but it rocked twice at the Apollo for me - okay it has a bit of Oasis about it but so what- does any else agree with me?

Yeah - the intro in particular rocks - in a somewhat scuzzy, sleazy, dirty kinda way.

I haven't heard it live, but on the CD I hate the thing. I always skip it now (though I listened to it enough to know I hate it).

From what I heard of it when I got to hear Get Ready a few weeks ago, I honestly can't remember anything from it, but I'll keep my ears peeled when I get it next Tuesday.

I tried getting the English copy back in Sep, but the record label wouldn't allow any importing. Cheap bastards....I did get to hear Get Ready down at the college radio station my coz works for, but I didn't get a chance to do a detailed listen, just a scan of tracks that I didn't have time to get to.

Everyone's allowed one shit track now and then. Let's face it, Echo and the Bunnymen put about 6 on every album bar Crocs, yet this is only about New Order's third ever, after the thud thud one on Republic that I've forgotten the name of and Confusion, which I like live but not on the record (well didn't like the 83 versions but do like the Substanec version). Slow Jam is pants though, sounds like someone else's song that was chucked on there as an afterthought. I can definitely get enough of this.

Echo seemed like one of those bands that never realized their potential, no matter how long they were at it. Frankly the Cure stole their thunder as far as being doom-and-gloom merchants went.

About the name of the song "Slow Jam" it's my cynical opinion that it's called this simply because thats maybe how the song evolved - all the musicians who were present at the time (I asume the 4 core members of NO and maybe that Corgan Dude - well thats how I'd like to imagine it!) Jamming together at a slow tempo?

Continuing to be cynical.....maybe there wasn't a general meaning to the lyrics (this theory has been put forward and is the reason why people seem to dislike "Slow Jam") so a working title was kept.

To me however although the words are a jumble - most of it seems to make sense in an enigmatic kind of way. I'm personally very fond of the line "I like that kind of stuff/It beats arithmetic" - that should have been my mantra when I was 12 LOL

'Slow Jam' was best referred to by Pastie as 'Slow Death'... simply because it best describes the pain we all go through when we've slipped on the stereogram and the hideous bitch has been unleashed upon the world yet again by mistake.

From the truly awful trump sounds of the beginning few bars to the unholy mess of the chorus and the painful ending this has to be the Order's worst musical effort to date.

After the Muffbox kindly copied me in on the 'Running this RiverRat down the River' curiousity it is astonishing to comprehend just which one of them made the decision to include 'Death Jam' and knock 'RunRat' on the head?

The only saving grace is the fact that they have woken up, smelt their own feculence and abolished any further public performances of this gory mess before one of us innocent bastards is killed by passing sonic poo along the air waves quicker than we can get out of the friggin way.

PS - I said it at the time and I'll say it now. It sounds, plays and smells like a bad egg from the leftovers of an Electronic album out-take.

And I thought some of Revenge's stuff was horse shit... I was sadly mistaken like a witch with only one broken broom on her hands.

Slow Jam IMO is a reasonably decent album track but contains the worst lyrics ever written by Barney.

When I first heard the track from a bootleg of the Liverpool gig I initially thought it sounded like My Bloody Valentine. The guitars are too clean for me to be honest.

btw - I was listening to Raise The Pressure last night. Not that great an album but Forbidden City is a classic.

Yes, it is a peach alright. Sounds sod-all like Electronic, that's why I like it. Could've been a classic NO track... what a waste.

Huntsman, you're right on track about Slow Death. Exactly what it's like to listen to this song. I listened to the whole album straight through for a few weeks and have since reprogrammed slow jam and run wild out and included Sabotage, Player in The league and Behind Close Doors for a great fucking New Order album. Slow jam is Hideous. New Order need a guiding light to help them make some decisions i.e. what songs to include on the album, what songs for singles, what formats (3 crystal singles was out of hand), live set etc...Slow Jam may have been tolerable if it was an internet only demo we had to search the globe for but it's included alongside some excellent songs (primitive notion, vicious streak). Record stores in Seattle open in 30minutes and even though i've had the album on promo since August, i'll be there cash in hand. I doubt there will be any bonus tracks even though they mentioned the US would be rewarded for waiting (could have left off Slow jam and Rock The Shack and included Sabotage and Player/Behind CD)

Well Muffler what can I say? - Surf Nazi's, horrible singing, awful production and nasty cheap drum machines... that's the long and short of it. I'm not one from shying away from speaking my mind so I'll leave it at horse shit and agree to differ with your good self.

1990 (ish) Factory sampler cassette tape free with mag. Had 'The Trouble with Girls' re-mixed and jazz'd up to the hilt (backing singers ahoy)... this, to me, is the best Revenge moment. Same tape had the one and only version (Ste Hague re-mix) of Bacon, Lettuce and Tamasco which saw Barnstable 'humming' the melody line after the first chorus. Also on tape, Happy Monday's Kinky Afroid re-mix... them were the days.

Hey Muff, played the vid. end-to-end last night... top notch. The Montreaux gig was the shits eh!? - very very weak I felt, great one for the archives though. Seemed to have no atmosphere whatsoever (no pun intended). Great version of 5-8-6 on the CD... where the hell did you nab that little monkey from?

Brian 30 minutes... exciting times or what?! - I can only hope for your sake that somebody has made the RIGHT decision to strip GR of Slow Painful Death in favour of Shut Them Doors and/or Player in his Leg Irons or Sabotage... or all 3 for god's sake.

For what it's worth, I agree, Getting Things Ready would have been a phenomenal record by anyones standard had they had some input - even from us!!!

Yeah, I always felt Montreux was a very heartless performance but you have to bear in mind the audience were basically a jazz crowd and therefore had to be won over. It warms up a little towards the end though. 5-8-6, I really could'nt tell you what version that is. I've got about 200 dj only cd's with various hard to get mixes on them, it's from one of them. I'm trying to get through the cd's and vinyl and get all the stuff available but it's gonna take a while. This afternoon I came across a 'whistle test' from about '86 where they done Sunrise and As it is, when it was. Both cracking versions full of energy.

Seriously, I still can't see why... I love that song! And I don't like all New Order songs, but this one is very catchy...

Maybe the lyrics are weak, but as far as I know, this is part of New Order! Cheesy lyrics..

And calling that the worst musical effort is maybe a little too far from reality.. if you're saying this is worst than, let's say, Angel Dust, Let's Go or The Village...

Anyway, I rest my case, it seems to be one of those songs you either like or hate :D
