Rate "Vietnam"

Finally found a bit of time to listen to it off of the album's website. Not as bad as a thought it could've been, found myself playing it four straight times. Never would've expected them to cover a reggae song (I guess they probably wouldn't do such a good job on Max Romeo's War Ina Babylon, though that song is certainly more timely lyricwise).

Just a bit of fun for a great cause, I gave it a 5 cause it'll never be one of my all time faves, nor will I shrink from the thought of having to hear it again in my life. I'll probably buy the album at some poing, especially cause I really liked the Spiritualized song.

i'm usually pretty forgiving about new order rarily had i had such a bad reaction to a new order song. or cover.

I actually quite like it. Great arrangement, although the backup singer needs to come in near the end, not the whole bloody song.

Barney's vocals are rather good, the guitar work is nice, Hooky's bass is well utilized, and Steve's drumming is top as always. Eight it is.

It has some good elements but ultimately is below average for New Order. I rate it a 4.

It could have been worse. Much, much worse.

I gave it two, I hope to never hear it again. Definite contender for the worst ever New Order song.

i'd give it a "6". i don't like the original, but i think the Order did a good job, the guitars are great, Hooky also, but as usual, the background singers do suck!

I gave it 7 cause New Order always deserves a good rate.

It's ok. I give it a 7, but i know i'm overrating the song. Can't make justice with New Order

Gave it a 5, not bad when put into perspective: a cover...of a reggae song...a put up job for a carity thing...I was dreading the result...not bad, not bad at all

I gave it a 6, which was being nice to it. Its an OK 'quick cover' with one or two interesting bits, but overall, it ain't really gonna get anywhere near my top 100 NO tunes.

I gave it a 0.Its total crap. Its embarassing. Its a big stain on a wonderful collection of high intelligent songs. On the other hand they cant do something more worse than this one.

seems like a nice little track to me, well arranged, and the guys sound comfortable, having some fun like back in the 80s... production not as bloated as the get ready tracks...

think it makes a positive point for the guys coolness, along with the Back to Mine mix, and that they are not taking themselves too serious...

odd... makes you wonder what people want, if they even know...

I give it a 6.

But if I listen to it 3 or 4 times in a row, I think I'll give it a 6-gun shot...

An 8? Someone is deaf, or they don't own any NO album before Republic. Are they have that blind "Everything NO does is awesome" thing going on. This song SUCKS way worse than Rock The Shack did. If I was captured and this song was fed to me through headphones, I would tell them anything they want to know.

I fully agree. Although i'm very happy that they are playing again, crappy songs is the least you want or even would expect. Rock the shack may not be great but it is a proof of them being unpredictable. This cover proofs they have become lazy and uninspired. Maybe we should form a committee to judge the new material before releasing it. That maybe a way to create a better world :)

I think it's worthy of a 5, Hooky's bass is nice, The chorus would be good if that awful woman did make it so overblown. In fact, her backing vocals are quite terrible, so desperate to be soulful that they come across far too contrived. But Barney sounds good.

It's very cheerful for a song about death. It's a little bit cheesy, but just when you think it's going to kill you, it gets a bit better again. I gave it a 7, because initially I didn't mind it. And I usually end up liking most New Order tracks after I listen to them like 5 or 6 times. Like Such A Good Thing and Player In The League. And Brutal, actually. I love all three of those songs now. But wow, New Order must really be in a good mood lately. The cheerful sound of Such A Good Thing was repeated in Vietnam. Oh well. I like the song, though it's not a top song in any way. The lyrics are a bit nerdy. But yeah.

NOTE: Someone said they never could have imagined New Order covering reggae. Remember Turn The Heater On?

NOTE2: Someone said Vietnam is not a New Order song. Well, it may not have been written by New Order, but it has been played by New Order. So in my eyes it's still a New Order song. As is Turn The Heater On. But it's also a Jimmy Cliff song, just as Turn The Heater On is also a Keith Hudson song.

I scored it an 8 when it probably should have been a 5-6. I found that listening to it in the car while driving on a nice day with the sunroof open and the wind blowing about the song improves ... it has a very summery flava to it.
