We still await someone to post a bootleg clip of Barney introducing the aforementioned song at a live gig to see if this sheds any light on the matter....

And words that sounds the same, but not spelled the same way are much better for that.
My favorite example is the SEAL, which is french is PHOQUE, which is pronounced.... FUCK :D
When my parents did a cruise to Alaska, many people looked at them funny when they were talking about the seals ;)

Hum, Shellshock had lyrics in Pretty in Pink? Don't remember if any part WITH lyrics were actually in the movie... 
I remember Duckie on his bike, but other than that... bad memory (well, it's been a looong looong time!)
It's definitely pronounced EL-ER-GEE-ER - introduced by Barney at WOMAD, July 1986 (just checked the bootleg) :)

Is it just me, or should we all start a petition to get Stephen Morris an honorary professorship at some nice little college? He doesn't even need to take the job (god forbid the new album take longer), but I suggest he become a professor of music since I don't believe there's a scientific field that studies chins. :D

It's very good in my opinion.
I've always said it the way Barn says it (and always assumed I was saying it wrong, since I had some Latin as well, so it's funny that I've had it right after all).
My favorite translingual obscenities both involve Italians and Scandinavians:
Swedish "pretty sweater" (vacker tröja) sounds just like Italian "fucking bitch", and Finnish "look at the sea" sounds like Italian "fucking shit" (cazzo merde). Loverly people, those Italians! :D

I pronounce it exactly as it's spelled. EL as in EL SALVADOR, EG as in EDGE, I as in EEL, A as in UGLY. El-Edge-Ee-Uh. Easy.
Barney also introduced it at Hammersmith 1985, as previously mentioned and gave a description of title as ' a funeral like dirge' (from memory so may not be exact words)and a comment along the lines of 'playing to our critics'.

i watched it the other day, there are no lyrics from shellshock in the movie... i don't think they really get past the intro. though, and it doesn't stick out, elegia is used in the scene just before molly ringwald freeks out on her flake-of-a-boyfriend
and as for saying "elegia," i am with almanso on this one.

That's as I've always said it, not bothered if it's right or wrong mind.
Not surprised the Yanks and Cockneys are struggling with it. Lets face it, when have they EVER got any vowel pronunciations correct
