It's not a proper word, more a variation on a theme, though I believe it's supposed to relate to funerals or something, like an elegy.
It's also the middle name of one of the Mackem's daughters. They're all big Order fans. Said father also runs a record label called Elegian records, and I think his management company might be named that too? 'ardcore!

"Elegia" is the latin word for "elegy". It's a proper word (albeit from a long-dead language...)!
how do people pronounce it though?
i always thought it was el-edge-ear, but used it as a handle on an internet site & people called me el-egg-ear

el-edge-ear, but I'm not 100% sure. Latin, eh? I don't remember what I ate yesterday, let alone what I learned at the uni 12 years ago...

Ell-eej-aah (softening the G)
my memory eludes me as to where i picked up that pronunciation but wrong or right i've stuck by it!!!
As long as you know what the wod means, it doesn't matter how it's pronounced, as long as it doesn't sound outright stupid.

I'm french native, so I've always pronounced it "eee lay gee ah", the italian way of you want :D
If it's latin, this MUST be the right way to say it, since french is a latin language..
I've just looked it up in my Oxford English Dictionary (well I've got to use it for something!). Translating all those fancy phonetic symbols it sounds like this....
E as in bEd L E as like the I in sIt G like a J IA as in fIRE

I've always seen it as EL-e-gia (thank that's how I think of it, can't be sure!) and figured it was a take-off on elegy. Maybe because I took French for two years (but can barely understand it now) and was acquainted with the way anything was denoted as feminine with "la", I think it just didn't seem out of the ordinary or worth saying "'Elegia'? What the hell is that?"
Elegia is indeed a word in croatian, albeit spelled "elegija". It's pronounced exactly the same as it's written. It roughly means a sad and nostalgic tune or song.
Well I've always pronounced it Elle-edge-e-errr or something.
Didn't realise it was the latin for elegy, always presumed it was a take on Elegiac which I think means sad or melancholy which seems to fit the song.

elegia. try pronouncing it the same way as elegy and adding a latin A (sort of AH). ELLEGEEAH for the english speakers. there you go.

as for the meaning of the word, an elegia use to be a special poetic composition to feel sorry for the death of a person or any other event that deserves being cried for.

nicely done, sir. that's always how i've pronounced it, being a yank. but if i am wrong, who cares? language is about communication, not properness. I mean, as long as the meaning of a word is conveyed, does it really matter how it is pronounced (so long as it isn't confusing to the listener)?

anyhow, back to elegia. i've always pronounced it el-EDGE-ee-ya. no idea if i'm right or not, but it sounds pleasant enough that way.... considering my above statement, however, i should probably get my arse in gear and figure out if it's the proper pronunciation! so, anyone know for abso-posi-lutely sure?

I certainly agree with you there, but I should've stressed more that pronunciation (or spelling, for that matter) doesn't matter all that much if there isn't the possibility for confusion. Since homoymns are easily confused, they should always be pronounced properly. But pronouncing 'elegia' differently than however it is that it's supposed to be said (i pronounce it the same way as you do) isn't going to be terribly confusing since so few English words sound similar to it.
