The Award for best Bassline by Peter Hook goes to.......!!!"

I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone thought was hooky's best bassline....

In my opinion, it would have to go to "Dream Attack" That would have to be the most "Soothing" bassline he has...

The most high energy bassline would have go to..."Perfect Kiss",...just because in the Substance video...watching him play the Bass still makes me want to give up the keys and take up the Bass!!!

Perfect Kiss, Everything's Gone Green, Temptation 82, and just about anything Joy Division recorded after Hooky's bass was brought up to lead instrument.

I've asked Hooky this very same question on the "Later with Jools Holland" website. I have a hunch that we may get a surprise answer.

My faves are Leave Me Alone (classic rendition at Brum 85 on the wrong string, and one other show where he completely forgets how to play it :)), Age of Consent, Procession, Broken Promise, Sunrise, Perfect Kiss, Guilty Partner, All The Way, quite a few really. None will ever compare with Shadwoplay though.

Shadowplay's a fucking classic. Have they revived that one for the stage show? I sense an answer of "No" but thought I'd ask anyway, would be nice to see.

BTW, is that the offical reason Hooky's bass was brought to the front, because Barney couldn't play that well at first? I've heard that, but also Barney says it was so Hook could hear himself in rehearsal.

Well, it wasen't a serious threat, and I think he actually just suggested bringing in another guitarist. I doubt Ian would've forced Barn to quit (it was Barney and Hooky's descision to let Ian join in the first place)

Bringing the bass up front was all part of "turning the sound inside out". Ian was struggling to sing the songs written from early 78 as his voice was too high, so they used a varispeed control on his vocals - he still sounded like Emlyn Hughes on helium off-mic, but had that deep resonance when singing purely through a device that lowered the tone. Hence they had to restructure how songs were created - bringing the bass up front and eseentially playing what would normally have been lead guitar parts on it helped to do that. Many songs written 78 onwards have bass as lead and vice versa, in terms of their niche within the song. OK, there are still loads where the bass performed a "traditional" bass role, ie Transmission, Shadowplay, Dead Souls etc, but bass riffs with barre chord guitar support, rather than lead guitar supported by a bassline, often became the norm. The drum patterns were also inverted to a degree, and I think the combined effect it what hooks (pun intended) you as it is so instantly listenable yet so original.

I thought is was that the gear they were using at the time was so crap that the only way to hear the bass was for Hooky to play higher up.This info is from numerous interviews that Hooky has given over the years.

Or could it be Barney? Barney does some slap bass on Confusion (See PFOD video). Hooky is actually playing guitar at first, then switches to bass towards the end to support Barney's slap bass. Cool...
