Up, down, turn around, please don't let me hit the ground....

Question time: What do you all consider New Order's finest moment on record? I'd have to go with Temptation (either version will do, but I fell for the 87 one first, so that's what I'm referencing). Granted Blue Monday was their breakthrough, but Temptation still has the ability to get a hold of my emotions and not let go until the last note. Well, that's my pick, what about you?

Blue Monday was the first new order song i heard and was the reason i started listening to them, so thats my choice. OK so 1994 was a bit late but i can't help only being 3 years old when blue monday came out!

I only really got into New Order in 1998 (I'd heard of them but only knew them from Regret. It helped having a college roomate obsessed with the Eighties.), so don't slag yourself. Blue Monday's a good song, but overall, like I said, it's Temptation all the way for me.

Can't pick one, really... Maybe Temptation. But it's too darn difficult.

temptation is special for me because i nearly cried at reading 98 when all the crowd was doing the ooooh ooooh oooooh bit. It was the first time i saw them live and it was also my 18th birthday. what a day!

If Reprise had released Get Ready a week ago instead of tomorrow, it would've been on my birthday (Oct. 9), but alas, they went with the 16th. I hope I at least get to see them live should they do a proper tour of the States next year.

i saw them at Reading 98, Manchester 98 and Manchester the other week. Got some great photo's that i'll scan in soon.

i can never really make up my mind about these things, but i`ll stick me neck out and say that its between procession, temptation, perfect kiss(especially the pots and pan percussion) and vanishing point.

ha ha... pots and pans percussion. Perfect.

The most amusing part of that video: Barney picks up a cowbell and starts beating on it with a drumstick. Leave to the pioneers of modern dance music to use diverse instrumentation!

"thieves like us" is wonderful too and "cries and whispers" but in a really creepy way. its hard too choose but theres one track which a lot of people seem to rate that definitely doesnt get my vote; the incrediby naff "mr disco".

Never heard "Mr. Disco", as I have still yet to purchase Technique (I assure you I'll pick it up at some point)

even though i have an unfortunate taste for cheesy music, mr disco is just too much for me. it borders on boyband in its sentiments..

Well, as a founding member of the Backstreet Boys (I was the wierd kid; they kicked me out when I interuppted a concert and started reading the Great Gatsby), I am offended by your comments about cheesy music. Our sentiments were genunine....okay I made all that up, but you knew that already

Technique is the best album. Is it just me or does Mr Disco borrow the bass line from state of the nation? and while i'm on the subject isn't the bass riff in vicious circle identical to the one in sweet lips?

..speaking of boybands i was fucking overjoyed to learn that the fat one in nsync is actually called fat one..

Mr Disco is just fantastic... the best part is the last lines whispered...

I think so.. I remember Hooky stating in an interview (maybe it wasn't about sweet lips but wdywfm?) that he had found the bassline on "som old demo lying around"...

I think, had Barney posed for Tiger Beat back in the early 80s, New Order could've been pin-ups on the level of the New Kids On the Block and New Edition. Of course, does anyone remember New Edition?

Oh, right now I've gotta go with Temptation. This is due to the fact that way back when this song was first released on import, but not in the U.S., me and a couple of friends would always call up KBVR in Corvallis and have them play that song at least once a day on the air until we could get our own copies of the record(there may have been college radio around here when Ceremony and Movement came out, but I wasn't aware of it).

In a way, I think it's great. Sometimes, I would like to never have seen some of my favorite films, read some of my fave books, heard some of my fave records.

You're perfectly right, New... erm... Order. I noticed that State Of The Nation/Mr Disco connection for years and was a little surprised no one ever mentioned it.

I knew having the name 'New 0rder' was going to get confusing.... time for a change i think...

I agree with this; as a package you could buy off the shelf, this has to be one their greatest moments. That they released this utter gem which has touched so many of us, and yet not make it a big deal, is what NO are all about to me. But does anyone remember a one-off tv programme back in the mid 80's (I think it was) about NO and Factory ? I can't remember the name but as it ended they showed NO playing TLU live (could've been in the Hac?) and switched the scenes from the group to a backdrop of Manchester country-side and inner city. If you can imagine the intro with just the drum beat at first and then those majestic synths coming in while we're looking at the hills and woodland surrounding Manchester and then cutting back to an electrifying, tense and almost solemn atmosphere inside the gig, then Barny opening the lines with "I've lived... I've lived... I've lived... " before beginning the song proper. It was just fantastic. All four just playing their instruments as if totally dedicted to the task; Hooky, still, head bowed over his bass and pulsing to the sway of the rythmn, Stephen still sweating from a previous number even though this was an easier one to play, Gillian wearing a frock, one hand leant over the keyboards and the other playing those melodies with all the confidance of a first -timer, and Barney, white t-shirt, shorts, yellow id band, eyes closed and both hands on the mike, trying but failing to look as if he doesn't give a damn. Seem to recall Barney ad-libbing near the end of the song, just before he decides to take off his guitar,drop it to the ground and walk off leaving the others to finish off the song. Genius.

But I have to say my personal favourite will remain Procession. Probably the first NO song I heard, probably courtesy of Peely.

Oh, and although it's a different thread, Shadowplay (live version on Still) for me has to be the most electrifying bass Hooky's played.
