Originally posted by Robert Roy I love Run, especially the mandolin part at the end - very cool and very original. The only other great song that I can think of with mandolin is "Losing my Religion" by REM.

Actually, it's not a mandolin on Run - just an acoustic 12-string guitar. Spot on about REM though - top tune CTD

As I tried to say before, the least greatest NO song for mine is either "Hurt" or "Confusion", although both have sadly appropriate titles.

Oh, and thats not a mandolin at the end of Run either - it's an acoustic 12-string guitar. CTD

Liv - rest assured State of the Nation is one of New Order's crowning glories. It is a superb song, so intense its unreal. The singing is excellent, most probably down to the recording technique (i.e. the close-to-Barney's mouth raw vocal mic.) - the throbbing bass is excellent, Hooky's on-form and the fucking keyboards at the beginning sned shivers down my spine! -

Even Shame of the Nation, I put that on nowadays and it still sounds fresh. Did you ever see them play SOFN on The Tube? - Barney had a long yellow jumper on and looked about 10 year old... magic.

State of the Nation is a CLASSIC New Order track.

Hunter, Well, im glad to see im not the only person who appreciates a classic. I totally get the spine shivers bit, I fucking love this track, makes me go all tingly when i hear it. I get the same effect from 1963 if im in the right mood.... Liv

Spot on Liv and Nicholas (sorry that I kept calling you Hunter before but I thought that that was your first name). SOTN is a real tough track and perfect for the time when it was released - the NO gigs at the time were getting, how shall I put it, boisterous(!)to say the least and this seemed to sum up the feeling at the time. I remember the Tube appearance - didn't he have white socks on too? I still reckon the Fine Time appearance on TOTP was the best though :-)

I'm not to fond of Rock the Shack, dosn't seem to fit in.

Andy and Nicholas (sorry did the Hunter thing too!)

I dont remember the Tube appearance but would love to see it now! lol!I think I remember Fine Time on TOTP but I think you can beat the appearance on TOTP when they did Blue Monday and Gillian was dressed in a big browny coloured skirtand a pink blouse like a Granny (bless her!)and Barney got the giggles towards the end.. lol I used to love the way Hooky looked in those days too, almost as if he was going off to Sunday School....so presentable! lolololol

Those were the days.....

Fine Time on TOTP was when Barney Bloggsed up complete with a pair of dungas and did a Bez.

When they did 'Riverside' was good too as was 'Whistle Test' live from the Hac - they did 'As it is..' then 'Sunrise' and Barney threw his guitar on the floor and a roadie just managed to fix it in time for the first guitar break. Rock 'n' roll!

The Radio 1 dual radio/tv appearance was pretty bad though. You could see that they were really uncomfortable playing in a clinical, un-atmospheric studio.

Apparently they turned up very late and weren't set up properly.

Well I dont know about you guys, but I can't stand Every Little Counts or aEvery Second Counts or whatever.. I dont even bother to find out the name of the song, thats how little I care for it. But that's the only song I can complain about. I used to dislike ICB too, but now it's growing on me. And about Rock The Shack... When compared to the other Get Ready Songs like Crystal, it's a little weak, but still not bad. But like somebody said earlier, there are no BAD New Order songs, just regular or weaker ones.

That makes me think : is their anyway to see that TOTP performance ("Fine Time") anywhere on a website or something. I heard about it a lot but never saw it... Maybe the webmasters of this site... :)

Run is awful. So is the video. What were they thinking? But, I'd still rather listen to a "bad" NO song over 90% of whats out there.

Can't understand why people don't like 'Run'-think it's a cracker personally..least favourite of mine would probably be Ruined in a Day

Couldn't think of a track to put here but someone saying Angel Dust brings a nod of agreement from me. And perhaps All The Way. Not bad songs in their own right but I felt on both albums they were being held up as the 'harder' track when compared with their peers, whereas neither of them came close to earlier songs such as Age of Consent or Sunrise. Bit like Close Range from the new bunch - not bad, but not as 'kicking' as some might have us believe (Barney's comments at the Olympia, for one).

Am I the only one who doesn't like Spooky? That was pretty bad. The remix of it that appeared on The Rest of was excellent but the song itself wasn't very good.

I like Spooky and particularly the remixes.

Sorry, I disagree, Run is a cracking track, and the video, is very surreal, but strangely compelling... But hey, thats only my opinion!

Actually, I think Spooky has fantastic remixes. NONE of them are bad in my opinion, which is quite a rare thing these days.

I think the song itself could have turned out much better if it had been using a few elements from the remixes, such as the NewOrder In Heaven Mix, Stadium Mix and Magimix/Moulimix/Minimix.

I agree with what you say about the Spoky remixes-the moulimix(I think) which was used for the video and the Stadium mix were particuarly good. Think all the Crystal mixes are pretty decent-though I can understand the Bedrock mixes not appealing to everyone...

Sometimes it seems like it takes a good remix to bring out the best in a NO song. I wish there had been remixes of more songs from Republic.

I happen to love State of the Nation (especially when Barney "grunts", I think that is him :P ) I also do like Run, and the video is wonderful..very entertaining... but on the subject.. My least favorite would have to be 586 and most of Movement...

I love the grunts/whoops too, same as on The Perfect Kiss.... always makes me smile! :)

But as for the Movement comments... hmmmmm..... not sure i agree with that, but hey, variety is the spice of life as they say.....

Sometimes, I have the impression that there's a lot of people that like "Movement" because it reminds them of Joy Division. I don't know... Maybe I'm wrong but I find "Movement" a rather difficult album to listen to. And anyway, if it was only for it, I would never have fallen for New Order.

I rarely listen top it. For me, it's just an important part of history, the link between JD and NO but the things that came just afterwards are so much more appealing ("Everyhing's Gone Green", "Temptation", "Age Of Consent"). With these songs, I would become a fan instantly.

But I already am a fan, so what's the point ? :)

I don't understand why everybody dislikes 586 so much; I like it a lot (although I skip the first minute and three quarters)
