ICB - Ian Curtis Born

Though it's not significant enough to appear on this site's 'Today's History' box, today should mark Ian Curtis' 47th Birthday. But as the stupid sod ain't around what do you think he'd be doing now? Joy Division? Solo? Poetry? Painting and decorating?

Probably something to do with arranging and selling shrubberies :D

Nah, it's hard to imagine what the old soul would be doing now...I can't see how he could've stayed with the band all these years without some sort of remission of his epilepsy, or at least a better control over himself due to medication. I think Barney's statement that the drugs Ian was on contributed to his suicide is correct. He'd probably end up broke from the Hac and Dry Bar, though.

He would be writing beautiful songs for New Order's music :D Barney still didn't learn how to do it.

I think Ian would be a producer or a famous writter these days.Maybe Joy Division would be the nº1 band in the word today (I hate this idea).The will to die young,drugs and his epilepsy were the reasons of his death.

He'd have been dead at 24 if he'd got past 23. He didn't want to live any more. It's all bollocks. Let him rest.

Oh dear. No wonder the band take the piss out of the fans sometimes.

I'm not sure that the band's birthdays have any relevance to us. Not as it we are all signing a card for them, is it ? Certainly noting the birthday of a dead man is taking sycophancy to pretty sad extremes.

All the same, flagging up the birth date of someone who has been dead for 23 years is irrelevant. Where's Rob Gretton's birth date mention, if we are going to have some consistency ? He had a far bigger impact over a 20 year period than Ian Curtis !

Are you sure about that? Without Curtis where would Gretton have ended up - Convictions for hooliganism? Would JD have got anywhere without Gretton? - I'd like to think so. Could Gretton's grand plans (Hacienda etc) have got anywhere without the cash generate by the JD / NO cash flow?

I agree consistency is needed, wetting yer knickers on a popstars birthday is something my sister used to do when she was ten. However, when the birthday (suicide)boy is dead it can be a time for contemplation of 'what ifs?' - So for the sake of consistency thanks to the webmasters for putting the date on... alternatively can they take them all off please!

Rob Gretton never gets enough credit. End of story.

I don't think JD would've got anywhere without Rob Gretton - they'd have just disappeared into the post punk masses along with god knows how many other bands. All the major players in the JD/NO story (the band members, Rob, Wilson, Martin Hannett) were necessary for things to have turned out the way they did. Can you imagine what kind of songs would've been written by a Stiff Kittens/Warsaw without Ian? Or what Ian's lyrics would've sounded like without the other 3 to come up with the music? (tho' I hate writing it that way 'cos the band was 4 equals, not a singer and 3 backing musicians). Without Hannett's contribution the sound may not have been distinguishable from dozens of other bands at the time and Factory's outlook enabled them to develop as a band without the pressure of 'producing the hits'. And just look at all the mistakes the band made before Rob came on board...

I call them the Factory Family.They were a perfect team Ian,Barney,Hooky,Steve,Rob,Wilson,Hannet,Alan,Saville.

Couldn't agree more. Mind you, Rob didn't steer them clear of quite a few mistakes of Wilson's racing imagination !!

Yeah, Wilson could always be a bit of a twat...but anyone who spent their savings to pay for Unknown Pleasures has gotta be a bit of a hero in some ways! I just wish he'd ignored Hannett re. not getting a plugger in for Transmission...with the right promotion I'm sure that would've been a hit single!
