back on subject:

if you think about the way the song was recorded (drums first, maybe keys next, than bass, and then vocals last), you can hear the levels of seriousness. this is where the 'genius' comes in. then tac on the atonal keys, then the scratch, and you've got some pretty bizzare stuff for a band in the mid 80's.

I love "Every Little Counts". Great closer.

Every Little Counts is genius.. if not for the music. the closing and the off key singing are right. This doesn't make it a novelty.. it isn't necessary a one time joke. It is a joyful mood that you can smile along with them everytime.

Your Silent Face is pretty ballad-y

We did some Joy Division's stuff trades and he sent me the english 24 hpp dvd too. About Every Little Counts,some friends of mine tought their records were scratched after listening to it.It was so funny when I told them that it was part of the song.Some still didn't believe in me Did it also happen to you?

Its a shame that they didn't record different endings for different types of media. My first copy of Brotherhood was the cassette version and the first time I listened to it was in the car. Hence, the scratching didn't fool me even a bit. Now I feel a little cheated - its not like I can go back and re-live the moment.

Maybe someone with more musical knowledge can comment on how original this ending was. By the time I heard it I had already heard, for example, The Smiths - Asleep which ends with a sample from a movie(?) that sounds like a record skipping (but not scratching).

I'm with Al on this. All Day Long sounds like that bloody Xmas song from Greg Lake, and Angel Dust is pretentious garbage. You can get away with things like 'So why don't you...' if it's a great song, but 'Every Little Counts' just makes me cringe; pretend scratches at the end of the album; do me a favour! I prefer the 'You can turn it off now' at the end of Monaco's MFP; nearly jumped out me skin the first time I heard it.

It's definitely a play on Lou Reed's, "Walk on the Wild Side," and I've loved it ever since I first heard it. The only bummer in it to me is that after the brief pause, an absolutely gorgeous keyboard/synth motif starts, and then inexplicably they get rid of it after a few moments to lead to that crashing, rather ugly finale. Still I love the tune, and who hate's the humor, does that mean you hate the lyrical finale to "Your Silent Face" too. Isn't this part of New Order's personality? Never taking cr@p too seriously?

Oh well. Whatever. I like the tune, it's not my favorite, but its a nice song and I certainly enjoy it, it's one of the few songs off of Brotherhood I actually enjoy, but whatever floats your boat. We can't all like the same thing, but we can all hate, "We All Stand".

He obviously couldn't keep a straight face while singing those shite lyrics. If he had sung those words with all sincerity, I think I'd throw the disc against the wall. The laughing is the highlight of the song for me.

i like every little counts cause it has cute lyrics. and i love the giggles. makes me laugh everytimei hear it. not a bad song nor a great song, but i wouldnt suggest this as a song to get to a new new order fan.

yeah, he's definately laughing at the lyrics. I've got an old issue of Q somewhere, with Barney being interviewed in the Q&A section at the front. The best question was "Is 'touched by the hand of God' about whacking off?" and Barney has to ak what whacking off is.

someone speculated that it was the fact he couldn't stay in key that made him laugh. that plus the lyrics... yeah, you have a point. if he actually did sing the line well, the mood of the tune would be ruined.
