It's hard to say, but I think the latest 'The Cure' live DVD (Triology) is briliant, aspecialy the Pornography section.... Damn Smith's beating NO live... I also have the New Order live DVD's but the live performence is real bad... I'm not talking musicaly but about the performence of the band... NO on a large stage looks like a schoolband during their first gig... strange dances... strange words between the songs... I almost feel ashame when I see Bernard dancing and shouting 'Lets rock tha house.. yeah...'

PSE go back to the roots... I prefere to see New Order in small venues instead of large festivals and stages... Come on boys you can do MUCH better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:thumb:

Have you noticed that Gillian Gilbert is not playing live with them anymore ? :nonono:

1- Guess Who = Spotnick? Wild guess 2- Shouting: "Let's rock tha f***ing house" 3- The amount of movement by the Cure is so minimal you could wonder about why to watch the DVD in the first place. The CD's would be ok for the purpose. 4- The Taras Shevchenko venue is on 316. I don't know how complete it is but seems ok with me. In fact I think that providing an overview of a musical span of time in the form of the NO 316 DVD is more interesting than the Cure approach.

Trilogy is an amazing accomplishment. I wish it would get the press it absolutely deserves. Front page on American magazines--is how it should be. At times the perfection of the sets is unnerving. I don't think I've ever seen a band play so perfectly and with such intent! I absolutely adore NO, but I don't think I've seen any live performance as close to divine like that Cure show. I don't think I ever will either. On a side note, I got my hands on the new siouxsie live dvd--what a disappointment vocally...Land's End kicks and is very good though.

1- Second guess = Guess Who = Scott Harrison 2- Why do you interpret perfection as a performance being 100% the same as the original recording? What does that tell us about you?

Guess Who = just Guess Who, I'n not an aka or ghost-nick.

About The old NO gig on DVD>>> yes that one is good, that's what i mean when i talk about normal venues and not about massive festivals etc... new Order pse keep your live performence on a small scale....

About The Cure DVD... damn I like the Pornography album it's number one on my all time favorite album list...

I lost track of the Cure after "Wish," so, who exactly is in the band these days?

I'm too lazy to look it up.

I totally agree with you. As I've seen neither New Order nor The Cure live (yet), it seems to me that The Cure simply sounds considerably more solid than New Order ever will live (although it is true that they hardly move around, but what do you expect?). From what I've seen and heard of live concerts, New Order is a band that really does their best work in the studio. As for divine, I would've preferred substituting Faith for Bloodflowers (and a Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography trilogy would've been more apt), although the latter album does have some great songs on it (most notably the final track). As for The Cure sounding like the albums when playing live, let's not forget 14-minute versions of 'A Forest' or 'The Walk' played acoustic using kazoos, as just a few examples of differences.

New Order is the best band in the world.Cure's fans try to find a way to get out!!! :finger:

My topic is not about the quaestion whats the best band..... it's about live performence..... I was disappointed after seeeing NO live on DVD..... In Holland we've got a saying, I'll try to translate:>>

I feel a shame in stead of the person that should be..... I mean it's rater s shame when you see NO making dances and shouting ' Let's Rock The F%$# House' ' Yippy a Yeah' ....

My Favorite band top 10 (album).

  1. Coil
  2. Joy Division
  3. The Cure
  4. The Waterboys
  5. New Order
  6. The Stranglers
  7. Adam & the Ants
  8. Lee 'Scratch' Perry
  9. The Specials
  10. The Pogues

The order is depending on my mood :-)

But when I look to the live performence this will totaly look different. I've seen Coil, Lee Perry, The Cure live (in real live) and see and hear most of the other band live on CD or DVD... In the case of live performence (with the same bands)

  1. Joy Division
  2. The Pogues
  3. The Cure
  4. The stranglers
  5. etc... etc.. Not on the list New Order.... too bad but I've seen too many local bands that give a better live performence than New Order....

But Oke.. i still want to see them live on stage here in Amsterdam in a vanue like 'Paradiso' or 'Melkweg'

Once again, WTF have the Cure got to do with New Order?!

I never studied accountancy or wore eye-liner and I don't live in suburbia so could someone sane (and Engerlish) please explain the relevance to me??!!!

Sorry to say but your question is more stupid than the compare of TC & NO, both making the same style of music.... and know the history... both bands where in a kind of competition a long time ago (the time you listen to ABBA)

No offense

Offence taken.

Sorry, but I'm English, I'm not a loner, I don't have 'issues' with my sexuality and I don't get bullied by 'bigger boys' so I fail to see the comparison.

The Cure and New Order attract totally different audiences in their home country so I still fail to see any common ground. And I'd never ever heard of the Cure(*) being lumped in with New Order until I was exposed to boards such as this in very recent years.

(* see also Depeche Mode, Pet Shops Boys, Ultravox).

In fact, I would go so far as to say I find it rather insulting being lumped in with the Cure. Nearly almost as insulting as when an Aussie girl I work with, when asked a question about the Pet Shop Boys recently, was heard to comment, "Go ask Al Jarvis - he follows them around the world!". Or when a workmate recently asked me what ever happened to Rick Astley, and I retorted how the fcuk should I know? And he countered, well you like 80's sh&te.

Ugh, The Cure have officialy entered "dinosaur" territory. It's almost shameful.

I like Disintegration,it's a great album. The Cure always tried to sound like Joy Division, listen to their bass line.Although Ian Curtis never had a different haircut he's much better songwritter than Bob,did you see his lyrics?Cure's last 2 albums are horrible.New Order is the one :thumb:

The Cure give more songs to their fan, that's for sure.. but they ARE boring to watch....

After seeing a U2 gig, The Cure seems a show for seniors, now that's entertainment.

New Order are in the middle, but at least they are doing something on stage.. Barney does his annual work-out in those gigs

But I admit they could do more songs, with their back-catalogue.. it would be appreciated by everyone, but we're all just happy they are still around.

Oh, and Al would like them to change their setlist at every show ;)

I don't know either, but these two groups tend to be categorized together in this side of the ocean. :nonono:

What both bands have in common?

Many fans like both groups.. that's what they have in common!

At least in North America, it seems most fans of either group like the other as well... you can add Depeche Mode to that list.

Except that the goth look of The Cure made them more popular, and the Depeche Mode "clean" (pre-1993) look brought them a lot of female support..

As for New Order, they never dressed on stage, they are who they are, they do music when they want, the Factory sipirt is a lot different than the other major labels too... if New Order would have been on London before, I don't think it would have been the same!

Might not be the same in England of course...!

Duh! Don't you remember that time when Barney's ex-wife caught him in bed with Robert Smith?

Or was that somebody else...

In THIS case, the point was to play three albums back to back. Changing the way the songs are done would move away from this goal. For example, I highly enjoyed the way Bowie played The Man Who Sold the World the last time I saw him and it was completely different, and in a different setting. If that says anything about me I would hope it's that there should be a lot of respect for people that write material and can also present that material live the same way. How many bands have I sat through that I love from the studio but see live and find it abyssmal? It doesn't make someone a better artist to remix themselves or butcher their own material on stage. It can work, but most of the time I've found people aren't at the show to see how the band restructures the songs that sold their tickets in the first place.

I think that NO are brilliant live BECAUSE they tend to be so "Krusty"...forget all the polish that you can see everytime. You NEVER know what is going through the minds of those strange ones in NO...always a surprise!!

I'm equally a fan of both NO and the Cure, and I've watched Trilogy and seen NO live in TV performances and heard them on Electronic Ecstacy. Album-wise, both bands are good, but NO mostly can't seem to cut it live - or does it with mininmal success - because a lot of there songs seem to rely on pre-programmed music. The stuff I heard on EE was good, even R&R, a song that I thought would bomb live, but something like TPK is inconsistant. On EE, the song begins straight with the sampler line instead of Hooky's bass solo and has its ups and downs. Also, after reading the article about NO's '83 show at the Chicago Metro and how the equiptment failed, I've realized that - probably out of its obviousness - that if NO doesn't have their electronic equiptment - samplers, synthesizer, drum machine, etc - that they've lost half the parts of a song. The Cure - I saw them live in Camden 3 years ago and on the Trilogy - don't rely as much on the same kind of equiptment as NO does. Thus, they have a greater chance of cutting it live.

I've never studied accountancy, tho' I have worn eye liner and lived in suburbia, but I'd say that New Order and the Cure have nothing to do with each other...for my part I've seen the Cure once and promised myself I wouldn't waste my time seeing them again. And tho' 'Guess Who' obviously finds Barney's 'Rock the house' comment embarrassing, I'd bet that anyone at Reading that day will never forget New Order's storming set. And how can Joy Division be top of your live band list, Guess Who? Did you ever see them live?

Well I'm English and a fan of both NO and the Cure, but then I'm a soft Southerner, so that's probably why.

The Cure do seem to have a very different fanbase to NO, more likely to be Continental European (or even South American), younger, more middle class and more likely to be leftish in a very soft greenpeace-CND, racism-is-nasty kind of way. NO seem to attract a lot more gruff Northern resolutely non-poncy wouldn't-be-caught-dead-in-makeup 30-something blokes who are either totally non political or are left wing in a hard manly kind of way, non of that soft CND why-can't-we-all-just-get-along crap. Just my biased impression.

And the Cure are better live, simply by virtue of not being so bloody lazy about varying setlists and playing long gigs. Though I guess that could be becuase they save all that energy by not moving about very much, as has been mentioned.

You don't see a football shirt at a Cure gig... 'nuff said.
