As expected, the Rhino releases duplicate the previously issued DVDs' content. The only variation of interest is the fact that 511 uses the Canadian cover art as opposed to the UK art.

I'm planning on making a trek to the Anderson branches of Best Buy and Circuit City (if both have them, CC will probably be cheaper). One problem, though: Strapped for cash, I may have to purchase one now and save the other for another time. If so, it's 316, as I've been waiting longer for a Region 1 version of that baby ![]()
ok i got the US 3 16 when the shops opened today and it's great to finally have an official copy. missing the booklet but it's good to have..
who else picked it up today?

I'm going to go buy 511, and maybe 316 while I'm at Circuit City

I had just logged on to the site after my jaunt to "The Quest for Immortality", you know, one of those traveling Egyptology gigs that we have here in the States every now and then...when someone starts knocking on my door...I'm like, wtf??? Nobody knocks on my door in the middle of the afternoon...I was thinking, is it a cop, have they come to take me away???
so I casually peep through the peephole...and it's the UPS lady...I'm thinking, what the hell came from UPS...I open the door, and see it's a DVD size box...then, and only then, does dense Jeff realize...now remember, I haven't had anything to drink yet...
so...amazing how much clearer TS is on DVD than it ever was on my VHS...or have I just watched it soooo many times???and the audio quality seems better as well...and I haven't even made it to 3 16 yet...
oh...you just asked who else got it..
I did!

Hey Nick, I can't wait to watch that DVd that comes with International. Oh wait! I actually can wait, because I have the patience of a saint... ![]()

I've got both on order from a college-town record shop, they'll supposedly come in tomorrow morning. No luck at the uber-franchises such as Wal-Mart, CC or BB.
I saw the Canadian cover of 511 in HMV today - sad bastard that I am, I was tempted to buy it - but £20 for a DVD I already have? I'd have to be nuts!
Going back tomorrow, £20 in hand. ARRRGGGHHH I'm an asshole, pandering to the whims of corporate manipulation! ![]()

I was also amazed at the quality of the TS concert on DVD compared to the VCR version.
so it wasn't just my warped imagination? greatness...too bad TS is soooooo much better than the other concert on that disc....but I love the new order talk...or whatever it is they call it...

I know I know, I'm terrible.. I'll post them all this thursay, I have to get rid of those.
It's the LAST TIME I'm shipping prizes myself!!
You can find both at the Wherehouse on sale for $12.99 (regular price is $14.99).
Don't delay. Respectable sales of these 2 titles may result in more reissues from Rhino.

and in conversation.....I enjoyed that, but would have enjoyed it more if Gillian and Steve were more involved in the feedback of the questions.
Circuit City did not have the dvd's, so I had to actually go inside northridge mall and check Suncoast; they had both dvd's, and I got 316 instead of 511 for no reason. The dvd is great both the New York and Reading performances are awesome, and it's funny to compare the two, and the interview was not half bad either.

Instead of? Believe me, you need to have both.
Okay, is 511 supposed to go snap, crackle and pop? I get home after a trek to Clemson to get 511, pop it in the DVD player, watch a little of the "interviews" section, everything's going fine. I decide to start watching the concert, right? I turn it on, and the minute Barney speaks into the microphone there's this annoying hiss, that only grows as Hooky and Barney strum their instruments! I think "Maybe this is just the first song, I'll flip ahead." So I flip ahead....and ahead....and ahead, and each and every song has the same terrible hiss going on. What's worse, I have to turn the volume down because it's so unbearable! ![]()
My question is this: Is that supposed to sound like that? I would imagine not, even though concert venues aren't the place for pristine sound quality, I doubt NO or the people around them would put out something with questionable sound. I figure maybe it's my speakers on the TV, but they work fine, and my DVD player works fine, and I tried all the audio options on the DVD but nothing seems to work and I am very very very very very very very very very very pissed off right now. What the fuck is wrong with it? ![]()
Originally posted by Patrick I bought the Canadian version, and there certainly isn't anything like that on mine.
So it's not a case of the mics at the gig possibly fucking up? That was my first attempt to rationalize why it sounded so bad

I'll get 511 by the end of next week I just have to go over to the mall or best buy in order to get the second dvd

I remember there were some complaints about sound when the DVD first came out outside of region 1, but as I said, the sound on my Canadian release is fine.
The sound on my UK copy is totally crap as well. It's too loud and as a result is completely distorted. And as I won mine from this esteemed website, I can't even take it back to exchange for another one!

Now, I could be (and probably am) wrong about this, because I know virtually nothing about surround sound and DVD formats, but my sound is also crap when I just set it to normal stereo, but sounds albsolutely fine when I set it to 5:1 surround (or whatever it's called). Thing is, I'm just playing it on my PC's DVD player which only has two, stereo speakers. Any chance they've merely got the menu wrong on the DVD, with the surround and normal stereo the wrong way around? If not, how come the sound is better on my PC when set to surround? Missing some other tracks of audio, perhaps - although it sounds like all the different elements of each song are audible.
Andy.
If I watch it with surround enabled, it's a million times worse. Completely unlistenable. Haven't got a DVD drive on my PC, so can't comment on that. Someone attempted to rip the audio for me, and that sounded garbage too.
Everything else on the DVD (the interviews and "Earlier in the Day") played fine, no problems at all. It's just the concert sounded awful. I went back to the store and got another copy, but if it does the same thing I'll just have to cancel it ![]()
Any complaints about the sound on 316? Just wondering, my order for that hasn't come in yet.
Originally posted by Patrick My copy of 316 sounds fine.
Alrighty then: 316 stays on order. If this copy of 511 is equally unbearable as yesterday's, I'm canceling that one. That is my final word![]()
I was just thinking, this isn't the first time I've had a NO/JD item that (for whatever reason) refused to cooperate with my electronic equipment. Let's see the list, shall we:
Closer - bought used, sometimes skipped around Colony (gave it to my cuz)
RCA album - bootleg, tracks 2-4 (and the very end of track one) un-fucking-listenable
Heart and Soul - first copy, the second disc had a bit of plastic hanging off the side with the music. Skipped at first during Atmosphere, then spread to SLC and was in danger of spreading.
Heart and Soul - second copy, skips occasionally during Peel Session version of (you guessed it!) Colony. Had to keep it, record store I bought it from went out of business.
Brotherhood - skips occasionally during Wierdo. Can't return opened items to Circuit City anymore (thank you, CD burners!
)
Various NO live bootlegs - Swear they sound great when I'm listening to them at local bootleg records store, but utter crap when I get them home on my player. Suspect the owner of the store tampered with his machine, but probably just my player's more sensitive to scratches. Nonetheless, unlistenable.
God must not like me much, or at least my taste in music ![]()
