511/316: Don't let this happen to you!

Seems like every time there's a new CD or DVD release from NO the posts start popping up here from people unable to find them at their local "box" store. This usually sends me into a panic, thinking I won't be able to locate the item even though I live within miles of every chain store on the planet, just outside Boston. Still, when RETRO came out I ordered it from Amazon.com to make sure I got the bonus disc and as we all know it didn't come with one. The next day I bought RETRO with the bonus disc at my local Newbury Comics music store. They had at least a half-dozen on the shelves. Then of course I had to waste time & money returning the bonus-less set to Amazon. This time the posts started about 511 & 316 not being available at Wal-Mart and other chains and I decided I'd order them directly from Rhino's website "just to be sure." Well, today I wandered into the same Newbury Comics store and there they were, on sale for $11.88 instead of the $14.95 (plus postage) I had just paid for them on Rhino's website. Maybe next time instead of panicing on reading that "International" isn't readily available in Tierra Del Fuego on release day I'll just stop reading these forum posts until the item appears at my local store!!

you bring up a good point. i too jumped at the bit for the Cool As Ice cd, ordered online and then found it not 12hrs after i had sent my credit card info over the net at a local shop for only 11.99...much cheaper than the price plus delivery from Darla. It proved to me that i should be patient, look for it in the shops before freaking out and ordering online. i am so cheap i almost never buy anything new anyway so it has to be something i want really bad to dish out the full price.

i would think that being in Boston (or near) you would have several good outlets...my friends up there go to Newbury Comics all the time for music..i guess they get all the good stuff.

Just because WALMART doesn't have it, does not mean it isn't widely distributed. Rhino has wonderful distribution.

People here are generally trying to help - usually relating the problems they've had and warning others.

You are right though - take heed of what they say, but always check things out for yourself, just to be sure. Even if you miss some stuff, usually someone here will be able to either get you a copy, or tell you where you can find one...

But yes, good advice - always check out your local stores, or ask here and see what people say...

I bought Taras Shevrenko at Newbury Comics many, many moons ago. Nice to here that they are still open.

and another thing:

aren't you glad you didn't shell out the big bucks on EBAY for a copy on DVD converted from PAL? Some paid 30bucks for a glitchy piece of shit off EBAY.

like William De Vaughn said - BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU"VE GOT

So I got me arse and call Suncoast and BINGO they had a copy of 3.16 and even held it for me until I arrived. When I got there I looked through the shelf but only saw 5 11.

$15.99. And before making that call I was in "wait and hope that Best Buy gets it". Let your fingers do the walking.

I have the misfortune of living in an area where New Order aren't terribly well-known (if it doesn't sound like Skynerd or Hank, Jr., or isn't whatever rapper-of-the-week, you probably won't find it here), and while there are some national chains located nearby, again the lack of demand for NO almost means a online purchase. For reasons beyond my control 511 proved to be incompatible with my TV stereo  but I still want 316 (I'm a glutton for punishment). So I'll probably do the Amazon thing again, otherwise I'll never see it in any local stores. But I do know the feeling of buying something online or at a fancy store in the mall, just to find it dirt-cheap about a week later at the same "mom and pop" record store you checked the day of release, which didn't have it then.

:banghead: :banghead: I work near 4 record stores, and none, as of yesterday, had non-import versions of 316 and 511. I checked at Tower and the 3 other, mostly used record places that still had the Cure Trilogy nevertheless, and none of them had either DVD. One had the french import of 511, but that was $30. Then again, none of those stores had the Smashing Pumpkins 1988-2001 DVD, either, which I heard is also an excellent DVD, with videos and live footage, but this isn't a pumpkins forum thankfully. But, if I find both NO DVD's, which is better in performance quality? Right now, I'm more incline to buying 316, but how is the sound quality? And, is Barney's singing/pitch so off that the songs are unlistenable?

316 is the better of the two IMHO, you get two top notch performances by the real New Order, and not the three-piece plus hangers-on like 511. There are also some sound quality concerns with 511, but at least you get to see Al Jarvis in Technicolor glory.

Yes, Newbury Comics is still around and doing quite well. A good thing since we lost our only HMV store earlier this year. Any NO fan visiting Boston should check them out. They have a great "used CDs" section where you can still find copies of "World" or "True Faith '94" on occasion. My disappointment at finding the DVDs for less was tempered by the fact that the "Now Playing" CD that was blaring out of their mega-watt stereo that day was none other than "Technique"!!

I think that the sound quality (recording not performance) on 5 11 is much better than 3.16. On 3.16 there are times when the sound fades for a second or two. But you get two concerts and a better interview with 3.16. Benard and Hooky almost get into an argument! More importantly, Gillian is on 3.16.

I own both, the thought of just owning one never crossed my mind.

I found 316 in philadelphia at the tower records on braod street, first day out, $14.95......I had to ask for it, but i got. Their stores are terribly laid out and i always ask when i can't find it, b/c usually the staff is lethargic they never bother to stock the shelves......

I didn't have any luck trying to rundown copies of 511/316 in los angeles. I didn't go to amoeba because they annoy the pants off of me, but nevertheless. I think the biggest problem with getting the dvds is alot of the places I checked out still had import versions of 511 that I'm sure they'd rather sell for the $38 asking price rather than a paltry $15.

i've got a few places around san diego to check out. they carry good stuff, but are slow to order brand-new stuff that isn't radiohead, or some other hipster indie buzz-band (ie: bright eyes, cursive, etc...) so i am givin' them some time.

It's curious.316 was released 2 years ago and 511 earlier this year in Brazil. Are there more NO fans here than in USA ? Do Warner find Brazil more attractive to release NO stuff ? All I can say is that many people like NO here although they are not fans like me.It's a band which is part of some people great moments on their teenage days (like me)and a sound which is still attractive. We can hear till today some NO songs at discos like BLT (most famous NO song in Brazil). Everybody knows that I am a great fan of Joy Division,it's obvious, but New Order is the most fascinating band I heard. They are anti-commercial, great musicians(excluding Gillian,of course) and have a chemistry that make us collect anything they release. They're almost 50 now.The end of the band is coming next but we will never forget them cause they deserve to become immortal.

you can just go to a local Suncoast or Wherehouse; I got mine for fifteen bux at Suncoast, but I regretted the purchase after learning that it was two bux cheaper at Wherehouse; I got mine from the Northridge mall; I'm sure there are plenty of places you can get both dvd's near you.

I noticed that too on 316; also the color tends to become much more vibrant for a couple of seconds here and there on the Reading festival part of the dvd

Im pretty anti-suncoast because they gauge you. I actually picked them up online on amazon for about 15.00 bucks a pop including shipping, which isnt that bad. theres just no immediate gratification involved.

 It took me five minutes to get the damn Suncoast cashier to stop asking whether I needed help finding the dvd and if I wanted to join their membership

woot! my band just got booked to do an in-store in the beginning of october at this one place in san diego. everytime a band plays, they give them %50 anything they want in the store. if they have it, i should be able to pickup 316 for around $8. all those lessons are starting to pay-off!:D

I had the 3 16 DVD in my hands today at F.Y.E., $14.99, but unfortunately, passed, mostly to the fact that I need a car repair that'll roughly cost $400, when I have less than 1/4 of that price at the moment....
