The future of NewOrderOnline

I'm happy to moderate some stuff - I log on at least once a day.

I do think that the site needs streamlining now as many things here are now superfluous.

It would be sad if the 'Official' site shut down, but maybe a more dynamic approach would be good.

I'll email you Nic :thumb:

My input around here's been greatly reduced in recent years but I still check in regularly.

With band output drying up, there's only so many times you can rehash the same old threads. Seems to me a lot of variety has been lost as some of the more colourful posters have left and the usual suspects remain, saying the usual things.

I'd suggest it's time to streamline the site. While the band was recording and touring there was plenty of motivation to turn this into the ultimate NO resource. Now, I'd carve away most of the forums, the discography, messages/blogs, friends, etc. Any resource that's not the ultimate of its type on the web can go. Keep it simple, cheaper and easier to run.

I've contributed before and will do again to keep things afloat.

Interested to see what others think. Dare I say it: perhaps we need a poll?

Well, i have a few people in my MSN list that tells me when we have real problems so i have to fix them.

Just to be clear, NOOL won't close, I'm just offering to switch it to another "application", so we can have more people to help me taking care of it.

The old site will still be 100% accessible until I can fully put the content in the new one.

It might looks a bit crappy until WenOrder skin it properly, but basically, it will remain the same thing, and to be honest, you'll probably enjoy it more because of the features included in it.

Spotnick, I don't know you personally, as I don't know anybody else on NOOL, but I've got to say what a wonderful website it is.

As a NO devotee, but not to the extent of some members, I very rarely bother with most of the website and go direct for the forums, where I find out all that I need to know to keep me going. Indeed, recently I think I've been doing my fair share of NO spotting, keeping onepopular thread alive!

In my humble opinion the website works on two levels; (i) as a thoroughly informative website for anybody new to NO and JD, and (ii) as a forum where more knowledgeble fans can let their egos clash.

Two lose one of these functions in the change would be a mistake.

I feel more moderation is also the way forward to help with the smooth running of the site. I would love to put my name forward, but even though I visit the website probably four times a week, I don't contribute enough and I believe there are more people worthier than I.

Finally, in any crossover I think a reduction in the Forums would make life easier. It seems Digital Republic is a dumping ground for everything these days, and in this day and age of tag clouds and other such shite I am sure it could be done without making the site less workable.

Whatever the outcome I will say this, NOOL is fantastic and I have thoroughly enjoyed the five years I've been a member.

Thanks guys.

The new web application is actually letting you see what you want to see (it has some kind of personal dashboard), making it a bit easier to find stuff.. plus a search engine.

Some people here have the link to "beta" test it, it's not skinned yet, it's regular and fortunately we'll have something working soon.

I would be extremely gutted to see the end of NOOL,even tho' I've not been a member for very long & haven't posted that much,NO/JD have been the most major musical part of my life for 26 years,& this site has been a great source of information, interest, thought provocation, humour & shared love of quite simply the best band(s) ever IMO.& it's all these things & more that make NOOL what it is,I don't know if it's unique, but it just seems it fits NO right,& that'll do for me.Cheers

I personally think just for the website to continue in any capacity would be great. It must take a real lot of effort and dedicated man hours to keep this one going, so well doen to all those who have contributed hugely over the years.

It would be sad for it to go together so Id be happy however it continues.

I think it's safe to say the site as it stands is stagnating badly. There needs to be a rebirth of some sort both stylistically and content-wise and at the moment I'm not really sure where that would come from or frankly if anyone can be bothered instigating it.

First off, the forum moderation situation needs to be addressed and people who have been warned of their behaviour and told to leave should stay gone rather than being able to return on duplicate accounts and make a mockery of the place. I'm not a prude but anyone reading some of the comments these people have made reflects badly on us, the web site and in some cases the band.

Secondly, the spam situation... it's out of control and is linked to the above moderation problems.

Thirdly, the forums need to be streamlined and maybe even cleared out completely... many of the international ones are basically not in use any more and could be merged with Digital Republic or something (I'd include Music for pleasure in that).

I would definitely be sad to see NOOL go but hardly surprised. The people who have forged social bonds away from the forums would stay in touch anyway and that's surely the main thing. Since 1997 when I first logged onto the Internet I've seen lots of NO related sites come and go including my own. Se la vie really. BCD and WIM are the most popular and the only thing BCD needs is decent moderation.

Fair play to NOOL for outlasting the lot of them :thumb:

worldinmotion.net is a graveyard these days. I don't think that this place will ever get like that as more people visit here and there is more of a social element to it. The format may have to change, but i'm sure this place will be around for a while.

Ceremony Mailing List still works...but if you need to change your email @, you can't do it since the ceremony home page doesn't exist anymore.

NOOL has been the first port of call of anything NO related, esp. with bootlegs, to get rid of TLU forum would be criminal and sooo would be the disgog, i find it here so much more useful and easier to navigate, without conflicting info, shame it just have the pictures,

i think the beta version so far is a better idea, it working for so far, just looks a little shit and bare, takes a little getting used to, but already i can see how its an improvment, thanks Nic

p.s Doc for moderator, he is here every 5minutes,

Would be a shame to see the site/forum go, but as this is the first time I've logged on for about 9 months, I'm pretty sure folks can survive without it...

Probably too late to add anything, but... Why not close/delete a bunch of the forums that never get any traffic and only waste bandwidth? (i.e. customer service, tech chat, community, state of the nation, weekly song reviews)

if they aren't being used, they aren't wasting bandwidth.

I haven't logged-in in forever. But I look at all the people in this thread who have been here either before I joined or close to that time. We've all contributed before and I'm sure we're all happy to do so again. Even if New Order is "over" we've been here before.

I'm listening to Closer while enjoying some wine. I just got a copy of the re-release of Technique and I look forward to acquiring the others. New Order regardless of their future output have a lot of life in them.

Just my two cents in this worthless economy.
