Yes, you heard it first, I'm about to begin the skelton of NewOrderOnline v3.0

It will not be ready for a while for sure, but it is now the time to list all the annoying things and enhancements you can find for NewOrderOnline, and to debate about it.

The new NewOrderOnline will more than surely be built on the Microsoft .NET platform, which is something I've learned since the beginning of the year and I'm quite pleased with. In the process, I will try to enhance the performance of the application and the forums in particular.

What you don't see about NewOrderOnline is the massive administrative side of it, something I have done to ease Sebastien's job, this is something that took hours & hours to built, and it's not necessairly easy to find the best way to do it, for instance the discography administrative side is a nightmare.

So basically, NewOrderOnline v3.0 will take shape, and it will be online for a testing purpose someday, if it works well, it will be the real version. I don't know yet if the design will change, probably a little so you can at least notice the changes, and we're still looking for people to help us finish the look & feel of NewOrderOnline.

As you know, many people have now contributed to NewOrderOnline to pay for the hosting fees, my personal contribution is to enhance this site, which I think I managed to do over the 2 last years, and I hope this new version will be more robust and faster than the actual version.

I have a hope to release v3.0 in the summer, but it will be difficult because of my wedding, but who knows, it's basically doing it when I feel like it.

So go ahead, give your comments and suggestions, I have an open mind, it's better to know everything since I will be starting it from scratch (don't worry, I will import the data in the new system!!)

:deal:

Here's one for the road, since it's the point and to get you started.

- Split the tour & concerts section by DATE instead of "Tour"

You can discuss it if you don't think it's a good idea, but it has been suggested by several users..

:jawdrop: Yer getting married? Only kidding Nicos, sounds good, but to avoid problems it would definitely be better to give a test run to it first, there's nothing more annoying than when you cannae get on the site. I have decided I am going to do some more reviews of concerts I've been at, and put them in the tours section, I also have loads more photies to add as well......if I ever get round to scanning them:thumb:

Great..the change can be very useful for consulting.

Yeah, I was one of them.

Dividing the gigs by "tour" doesn't make sense for New Order, that's not the way they operate.

You hope that the new version will be more robust & faster? Not to discourage it but this is definitley THE fastest forum website I'm registered with, bar none. And this is not arse kissing, just the facts.

Keep it up.

I'm sure we can live with this site as is, until after you've tied the knot. All the best to you and your future mrs.

OK banning Rocket would be much. How about a small wound, preferably on the chest or somewhere like that?

EDIT: Ok, this may be beyond your control Nic, but is there a chance more audio samples of different mixes will be going up anytime soon?

I'm sure you know I don't mean it. The others might mean it, but that's probably only because they are you posting under another nick and the knowledge of that fact is unbearable to them.

Firstly congratulations Nic on your forthcoming marriage!

Ok heres a few suggestions.

  1. Have the 'who's online' list at the top of the forum (ie where the retro rhino banner was) rather than on a seperate page

  2. Have post preview facility so you can check your post has come out the way you want it before it goes 'live' this would be useful when your not sure if links or pics you have attached have come out.

  3. Enable PM (private messaging) this would save on many of the FAO: threads, you can then have a 'buddy list'

  4. Bring back the chatroom :D

  5. Increase the capability of the stats to include how many threads each member has posted and on what forum

  6. Have a 'post of the month' competition

  7. The ability to attach a small .wav to your post - for example if you want to point out a part of a song or have a question on it. Make it a small size limit or space will be a major obstacle for this

  8. Have different style settings so the user can customize the board according to preference (if there at work etc)

  9. Facility to order posts by name/threadstarter/replies etc..

  10. Ability to expand and collapse threads.

:p

Oh yea, can I repeat my lazy-poster-of-the-year request for the top menu to be repeated at the bottom of long threads. So that after you make a post, like this one, you can then go straight back to the main forum page without first having to scroll all the way back up again to the menu!

Or just put the menu stuff in a seperate frame so it stays visible at the top whichever bit of the thread page you are looking at.

The top menu use to follow you down the page if you remember but it always seemed a bit dodgy and well now it doesnt do it anyway!!

But a simple html link to the top would be nice for the lazy bastards i agree :D

Whatever the new version is like, keep it simple and fast for netting at work.

Oh the option to turn off smilees would be handy for some as well - another work request!

The new version WILL have facilities to sort the thread any way you want it.

That's one good site of the .NET FrameWork, it's the DataGrid included with it!

I just don't know how fast it will be for an active site, this will need some testing.

As for the chat room, this will always be a tough thing to do via a web page.. but i'll give it a shot some day (it's still there btw.. just not working much, as usual)

Keep going, I'm taking notes.

All I can suggest is, since you mentioned getting more space, redo the Covers archives, with many downloadable mp3s!! Please?

I was never really fond of the naviagation... that menu at the top.

Also... some screens, such as the one where you enter your password and email, have no margrins, so the text is right up against the left side of the browser... not a major issue but cosmetically it annoys me.

Also... what was the deal with the Everything Gone Green flash video that used to be here? It had the dave clarke remix playing, and at the end it flashed some seemingly random letters and numbers... what do those numbers mean?

I'll check it for bugs and things when you're done Nic-Nack! ;)

Can you reduce my avatar to a more reasonable size please when you've got a minute. Make sure it's big enough for the ladies to see!

Might take a while though, problem is, can't really have both versions working together...

But I'm doing my best so it will work better than this version.. which works, but I'm never statisfied with the result..

does this mean I have to buy DOS-Xp or something? Is .NET ok in real ( meaning ones that comply with the W3c's guidlines) browsers, or do I need Internet exploder? there used to be some problems with the current site when using opera ( kept refreshing like a mad bugger), and that cleared up ( my end probably, unless you boys have done any modifications lately).

My only criticism of the current site is that it seems a little beefy, load times are rather long, even on ADSL, don't suppose .NET is gonna improve that any is it? mind you, long load times are a small price to pay for such an awesome resource.

Have you looked at any of the php pre-pack systems available at freshmeat.net? my bro set us up a clan forum in about 20 mins with one.....have a look.... http://bsrg.dnsalias.org/dbMM Loading will be slow as it is hosted on our home machine and I have a tendency to leave emule running when I leave for work ( pisses the hell out of my bro who tries to host comercial sites). I don't know at all if they are compatible with MS IIS or just good webservers :)

Nic, I know my suggestion would mean a LOT of work, but a few more commentaries on the discography section would be most appreciated. Rating the releases too!

How about we collectively take on this task?

everyone could volunteer a track/album to review and the job would be made that much easier - and we would have all contributed to its completion :)

I have an idea. Dunno if it has already been mentioned, but there is an extensive range of audio media that I love listening to!

I was thinking whether it would be possible for you to make the music on the site downloadable, if it was allowed of course. Thht would be sweet!

GOOD LUCK WITH THE REBUILD!!

I can download the music OK (just got one a minute ago) - there's a workaround, but I don't really wanna go publicising it without Spot's permission.

Congratulations on your forthcoming marriage, Nick! Further to the suggestion about us suggesting albums and tunes to review: assuming a reviews section is added to the new site, how about including an option for us to add our own reviews on the same page, as opposed to putting them in the forum like we might do now? It'd be a cool way for people to share their thoughts.

Well, the option is there Shelley, but for the concerts only.. eventually, I'd like to have a rating system for all pieces of the discography and review added there as well....!

It is, just type the direct URL, instead of ".ram" put ".ra" and you'll get the file.

Since Real Audio sucks, I just don't see the point.. you know, most of us have those in a really much better format! Ask around!

I'd like to make all gig recordings freely available to everyone ideally, but this would have huge bandwidth implications and would be a massive task ! What I can do though is offer 30 second or so samples of each gig to give people an idea of the sound quality.

As many of you know, most of my recordings are still on tape rather than CD, so an army of volunteers would be needed to convert them to CD. Here's the deal. I send you the tape, you convert it to CD, you keep a copy and send me back a copy and the original tape. Everyone wins. Interested parties please contact me at the above e-mail address.

This caused us many problems in the past, we put several concerts online a long time ago ;)

One interesting thing might be to clip what is said between the songs and put them in the concert's page

Serious suggestions...let's see...

Some more pictures of the group and group related people/place would be good if that's possible. Update it now and then.

Also, continue to leave out a fancy intro, it's not like it puts a spring to my step each time I come here.

You need to add more pictures of JD/NO, the pictures that you do have of the two bands are of little interest, you need to find more rare and hard to find pictures, for example; I have four photos of Joy Division at their last gig at Birmigham Uni. I consider these more than mere photos I got off the web, but documents of historical interest, I also have a few colour photos of Ian Curtis instead of the usual b/w photos. Congrates on your marriage, I hope you and your one and only will be forever in love (I'm sure you will).

P.S. Since i just became a member of the Republic I have decided to change my avatar to a picture by H.R. Giger to celebrate my 100+ posts.

I didn't know they still had the intro. Look carefully above. I suggested to continue to not have it, if it's still there than I'm not getting it anyway. So no matter.

oh, and the concerts...I would love to have those back...didn't get to download enough of them!!!

You would want pop-ups and porn!!...i like that there are no pop-ups in here!!!...and as for the porn...get off your lazy butt and surf for them yourself...like a normal guy  ....and why do you want the concerts, you havent made copies of the video yet!!! The site is great as is, maybe some more pics of the band would be nice, but in all I think it is perfect.....and I promis to be nicer to Jeff (and everyone else) in Seattle...well, I will try atleast

On the home page, "Today's History" could contain links to the particular gig page from the "Tours & Concerts" section as opposed to just being a list of events.

Had a look through the thread but saw no mention of this.

What about the videos made of gigs, private and pro shots, that are around? Could they be listed and linked to the particular gig.

Congratulations on this excellent site and please keep up the good work.

Judging from a couple of recent "I just discovered New Order...are there any other teenage fans?" posts, maybe it's time for a Kids Only page.

You know, downloadable coloring pages and stuff.

Do you have any direct connection with Factory? It's interesting that they are begging for somebody to start a Happy Monday's site, and offering unlimited assistance at http://www.factoryrecords.com/ the page appears to have Wilson's e-mail and if you are not in touch, well maybe it might be useful - not for the Mondays (although why not?) but just to add some 'je ne sais quoi'.

At present the site, although fantastic, is very slow loading each page (particularly the forum) - and I've got cable. Also, although the content is fantastic, navigation, in particular, and also design - for a site dedicated to a very design orientated band - is a little lacklustre. I think a marriage between style and content is really important (and i also apprecate very time consuming). I appreciate that you can't provide files of all NO's stuff, however, it would be useful if it were possible for members to set up an NO and related p2p file sharing system where we could exchange tracks, rare stuff etc., to remove (what I consider) the hideous spectre of commercialism over their material. I think I've made myself pretty clear about this regarding a certain David Sultan on both this site and his.

Any help I can give I'd be only too happy; I may even start a site of my own I'm that bored. Here's one I made earlier http://homepage.ntlworld.com/fennerhorne/.

After upgrading from Opera 6 to 7 (7.11), the cute blue/white menu-bar up on top stopped working. Actually, the blue part is there but the white text is gone and non-clickable.

A site map with old-skool "a href" links would be appreciated by those of us who don't want to use Inet Xbloated.

The Javascript menu bar is squished up in Safari too, but it still works. Ugly, though.

Isn't anybody else using Safari? Seb? Michael? Bueller?

Never heard of Safari.

There comes a time when we can't please everyone -- 99,5% of the Internet users are using either Internet Explorer or Netscape, so if the technology works for them, we're not gonna scrap a very useful tool bar just to please those of you out there who want to be fancy by using Opera, Safari or whatever program that is not "mainstream".

It should be Opera's and Safari's work to make sure their software is compatible, not ours.

The last comment obviously comes from someone who doesn't work with customers :nono:, or works for Microsoft... ;)

I never said that you should scrap the menu-bar, I just said that you could provide an alternative for those of us left in the 0.5%. My suggestion was a site-map with regular "a href" links, and/or regular "a href" links a'la the menu-bar at the very bottom of every page. This would satisfy the last 0.5% and turn the site from good to great, assuming that it is your objective to have a great site that is...

Explorer is a Windows-only product. Safari is the browser for Mac. I know we've been discussing Opera support before. I would recommend you to at least try the latest version of Opera, you may get hooked. If you don't testdrive other cars, you'd be stuck driving a Ford...

Don't worry, if the next version is indeed in .NET, it is quite fully compatible with everything, and the menus I would use are Infragistic's ones, I hope they did their work ok ;)

As for the site map, ever tried that link?

Not blaming NOOl for my browser problem, just waiting for apple to make their browser more compatible with more sites. :)

Hum, not to bug anyone, but there is nobody yet that made a lot of comments on enhancements of the data model...

Meaning, what would you want to have MORE in each place..

Too many people focused on content, it's not a bad thing, but this has nothing to do with the next version.

Right now I'm talking functionailities and enhancements to the frame, not the content!

As for addings pictures, there are already tons of pictures on this site in the concert sections, don't forget about those!

I think it is not hard to make it work since you have a database system.
