A friend of mine at work is a HUGE fan of the men in red; his family is originally from Massachussets, and he always catches 'em when they're in Seattle. Hell, he even went to the Yankee series in NY when Clemens was going for 300, and he said he was gonna wear his Yankees Suck!!! t-shirt; I told him I'd go to his funeral

Mike Greenwell is his fave player of all time, and we banter and trash talk all year long about everything, but it's all in fun out here; I can only imagine what it's like out your way. If I ever post anything that's really anti-Boston, it usually means that my friend has gone overboard on the hyperbole (Nomar is God, etc). I laughed at him when he predicted in March that they'd win 115 games; I just said 95 would be more likely, cause I said that there bullpen would let 'em down. Hats off especially to Mike Timlin for being such a stud in this series, and for shoring up that weakness.

Still, one more game, Pedro vs. Roger; I still gotta say Go Yankees :)

it is called devotion and unconditional love. we hate losing all the time and do give our teams management and owners shit. for me personally, i love sports and will continue to support the teams i love. and i am a fan of baseball enough to admit our loveable losers choked, the marlins are a better team and deserve to go to the world series.

Green, thanks for that explaination about your friend being a diehard Sox fan. That is funny about Mike Greenwell being his all-time favorite player. I used to like Carney Lansford and Marty Barrett. Two years ago my favorite player was Rich "El Guapo" Garces. This year I like Johnny Damon but obviously David Ortiz is the man.

Well last night was a huge win for the Red Sox and a demoralizing loss for the Yankees. Burkett vs Pettitte? That should have been an automatic win for the Yankees. I hate to continue the cliche, but the Red Sox did Cowboy Up like they've been doing all season.

Tonight will be one for the ages. Martinez vs Clemens for the World Series spot makes this game one of the biggest in all of sports history.

All I gotta say about the NLCS is: I wouldn't want to be that ball-catching fan right about now!

The Marlins are a hell of a team, they just don't strike me as having an identifiable fan base. Look at all those home games during the season, there were rows and rows of empty seats. I've never cared for the Marlins, I thought the '97 Series was a joke and probably the worst I ever saw (and I couldn't get behind either team), but this team could win it all.

I tell you what, let's try a bit of "reverse psychology" seeing as every prediction I've made in favor of a team I wanted to win has come back to bite me when they don't. Perhaps the baseball gods will mistake this for genuine hoping on my part and grant the exact opposite:

1.The Yankees beat the crap out of the Red Sox 14-2

2.Failing that, the Marlins take the Sox down in a four-game sweep

That sound "genuine" enough?

I still like Torre, Jeter, and some of the other guys who've been around since the '96 series (but not Jorge Posada....never liked him), but I don't like how Steinbrenner tries to "buy" a championship with guys like Clemens, Giambi, Matsui, etc. Nobody's mourning the loss of Chuck Knobloch, mind you, but the team from the late 90s seemed like a real team (kinda like the Marlins now), and it's a shame Paul O'Neil, Scott Brosius, and some of the other bulwarks of the '98 and '99 teams aren't around anymore, replaced by "here today, gone tomorrow" lunkheads who probably have no loyalty to the Yankee legacy. Noentheless, if the Yanks DO go to the Series and WIN (again, reverse psychology), this could be Torre's last year in a Yankee uniform, and Steinbrenner can help lead the rabble now masqurading as the Yankees to more meaningless Championships

Well, '98 was legit, as was '99, but '00 and Clemens-with-the-bat was the beginning of the end for me, Yankees-wise. I'll come back to the fold when Steiny kicks it and someone sensible takes over, but for now I'm the Prodigal Yankee Fan....forced to wander in a netherworld of attaching myself to lesser teams talent-wise, who nonetheless don't approach the game like it's one more way to get commercial endorsements.

On the plus side, maybe Don Zimmer should consider doing an ad for Viagra ("I was able to charge Pedro because I had a stiffy a mile wide and felt like I was seventeen again. Thanks, Viagra!")

Atlanta broke my heart one too many times in the early 90s (back when they started selling themselves as "America's Team", yet never seemed to finish what they'd started in the World Series). They had the best picthing staff in all of baseball (Smoltz, Avery, Maddux, Glavine) but no bats. This year, they had the bats but not the pitching. When they get the dynamic equal, they might actually win another one to go with 1995's ring....

Where did Avery go? Is he still with the Tigers?
