What a horrible sight New Orleans is at the minute, I hope anyone from thereabouts is safe and well.
The BBC are reporting there is no relief or aid in evidence, and that people are being left to their own devices and starvation.
How can this happen in such a wealthy nation with such HUGE military resources?
I only scan read the article (TBH I only heard what was happening TODAY, I've had my head up my arse post house move).
But am I to believe the whole fookin US army is in Iraq? You really gotta wonder what'll happen if a really dangerous country were to be agressive towards the US, if it takes ALL of the army to suppress and control a tiny battered nation like Iraq.
Surely, even if the Govt are useles, the ordinary people of the nearby states will help out?
Was quite shaken to see a Policeman in tears because he'd been running around helping as much as he could, but had no idea if his own family were alive.
I wish I could help, but I'm rather a long way away. it's certain that if something is not done really soon, it's going to get a lot worse very quick.
i just heard an interview via cellphone with a man who is in the new orleans convention center. he pleaded with the government NOT to send the national guard in yet because there were too many armed people inside the center and gathering in lines outside. he said the people outside are wandering around like zombies and he's terrified what they're going to do after dark, as they're armed. his suggestion was to send in people with bullhorns to tell people not to shoot and to put their guns down, because if the national guard comes in right now it will be nothing more than a shootout.
also, he said that they've started piling the bodies in one of the corners of the convention center because they don't know what to do with them.
it's like fucking 28 days later.
I'm gobsmacked, I heard a brief snippet of something on ITN from a brit touist in the superdome(?), talking about all sorts of horrible things including child rape!!!

I mean, even accepting y'all managed to elect the Dufus's Dufus to the highest office in the land, and that he wont do jack cos he's sent the army to get oil, and given the rest of the tax money to business....but OMG, how quickly does US society fall apart? Then again they do say that civilization, any civilazation, is only 3 square meals away from anarchy.

Public opinion in the area is obviously not really pro bush just now, but I have no impression of what the general mood in the country is. Are people pissed that nowt's happening? Did they just accept it when he said he'd launched the largest relief effort in US history? Surely by now civillian and charitable groups have seen that nothing's being done and will step in themselves. There MUST be FEMA evacuation camps nearby with food stocks ( unless,like the tinfoil hat brigade keep saying, they're really concentration camps waiting on marshall law to fill them up with ppl who don;t agree with bush).
I'm basically just confused, every disaster that's struck the US has been met with an equal force of human will and resourcefulness, but now, in a new millenium, it's "fuck it, they're a bunch of weirdos who know french, let em die"

even thou news reports do not really say this... but a majority of the people being effected the worst in the New Orleans area are poor blacks, old time poor neighborhoods, people who could not afford or were scared to leave their homes... these people distrust the local police and officials, and New Orleans historically has the reputation for having some of the most corrupt/ low quality police and local gov't ... this is all a bad situation and most of these people probably see little hope
as for Bush... people who supported him often say that he is a man of strong action, somebody they can trust when something needs done... yeah, right, like he can relate. Bush smirks or nervously laughs whenever he feels insincere about his comments... Bush cares about these people about as much as his father cared about the people in the LA riots

FWIW, I seen a LOT of stranded white folks too, many of them elderly (you give both balls and a leg to save the world as a youth and as an old man your own president sits back and watches you starve after a bit of wind).
I am shocked that people haven't started organising their own aid into the region, surely there must be foreign food aid around. Maybe US society really has descended to "I'm all right jack", but I bloody hope not. Then again, the way things are in that god forsaken land, the fucking military that ARE there probably have orders to shoot anyone bringing in food.

I cannot believe the breakdown in civilization in New Orleans. People shooting helicopters that evacuating the hospital. FEMA suspending boat rescues because of violence. No place to set down supplies.

the Uk lack of a response is even more stunning, we LOVE to think of ourselves as a helpful lot, and are usually one of the first to get manpower and aid to disaster areas. So where's the UK aid to these people?
The thing that scares me about troops being sent in with a specific "put down the assholes" mandate, is that it may have been a good idea a coupla days ago, but by now it would apear that many of the ordinary citizenary are getting more than a bit riled about how they've (not) been treated.....and given US gun laws, an unsettling proportion are likely to be armed. Trust George to do the wrong thing at the right time and the right thing at the wrong time. I actually play a game now called "predict Dubya's actions by thinking of the dumbest possible thing to do at any given time".
I was thinking about what's been said about society guttering and liquifying. I suppose that the more dependent on the infrastructure of society, the harder damage to it affects you. Makes you wonder about all those ggs over the years about the USA being so far gone that the loss of the coke machine and MTV is enough to send people mental. Then again, I seen no such loss of sanity in NYC a few years ago, they met that day with courage, so I dunno.
I can't do much from here but I'm willing to spend some money (red cross or else)... 
But there is always the question if the money gets where it is needed.

As I understand it. the acusation that is being raised is that the budget for the flood protection in NO was cut in order to finance the various wars and homeland security. This is surely a scandal of massive proportions now that a major city has, to all itents and purposes, been lost to the sea. The civil unrest must surely be in part due to anger at this.
Well if a US company blew all it's safety money on advertising, and there was a major incident, I assume someone would get roaylly fucked over for it, I don't suppose the same holds true for the Govt. ?

parts of the city are on fire--residential neighbourhoods have just started burning, including those near xavier university. with so much oil in the water they're expected to spread even further if they cannot be put out immediately, which isn't happening. these fires add to those burning since this morning in the industrial areas.
