Rush Limbaugh said that it is not the federal government's job to get involved in people's lives and save them ... Bush is all about making the federal government smaller and less involved in citizen's lives:lol: all this talk about what the government saving people is just liberal welfare state bullshit:lol:

it's so funny how the rhetoric changes to fit any situation

Unless they're the wealthiest 1%, that is. Because unlike the majority of Americans, they need all the Government assistance they can get.

The Feds *can't* go in until asked, and must still have just about their every action approved at the State level, unless the State cedes authority over the emergency to the Feds. That, in a nutshell, is what created the bureaucratic mess that is/was southern Louisiana. The Governor was bitching about the lack of federal response, and the red tape that she had to go through to get federal agencies to respond. That was a problem of her own making, for she refused to let the Feds have free reign regarding the response.

I finding it funny that those that hate Bush the most, those that hate the loss of freedom since 9/11 and say that Rumsfeld and the DHS is taking over are the very same people that expected 30,000 US military troops on the scene withing 5 minutes of the wind stopping and the water flooding.

72 hours to get a trickle of help to Homestead after Andrew left 250,000 homeless in 1992. The disaster area significantly less than Katrina.

I bet the amount of bitching would be almost nil if the US was not so fucking politically polarized at the moment. Making this a political issue and will only hurt those bitching. The left should be happy that Bush did not appear like Apollo moments after the levees burst. Had he been there the Democratic Party would have little choice but to disband. I doubt they will do well when Bush's term is up.

good point. as i mentioned in another post, governor blanco wanted to wait 24 hours to decide what to do when mayor nagin and president bush were ready to take immediate action (several days after the hurricane, granted).

Worthy of an investigation. Too bad this country won't get one.

Erm, given a choice between losing both the Bill of Rights and disaster relief, OR keeping both the Bill of Rights and disaster relief, I'll go for door #2. Funny, innit?

Typical when the President's name is George Bush.

Is It Time Yet?

Democrats Step Up Criticism

It's Not a "Blame Game"

We shall see...

TBH, this aint one for point scoring. Headscractching and futureproofing would be a beter pursuit.

It's of course everyone's right to abstain from voting, but when people do this en masse the extremists get in and scary things happen.

I think elections should be declared invalid and re-run if less than 75% of people vote (or maybe people should be compelled to vote).

Theres a whole brace of minority parties which are there for the minority opinion, but if everyone voted some of these smaller parties would have more influence.

I'm a pragmatic leftie... I voted Labour (Democrat) normally, but when they upset me by doing things like invading Iraq, I vote Green...

when was the last time 75% of the nation voted?

and whats the point in voting Green? do you not feel its a wasted vote? What would they do if they got in? nothing they don't have the foresight or the backing to plan for the big picture, has the Green party ever wona seat anywhere?

Yep, they've won seats in Europe.

The point of voting is that they push the sustainable development agenda.

I went to see Caroline Lucas speak in Dublin, and she was very good. One of the few people Ive seen speak with clarity on Europe. The British Green party is very good. Its taxation policies are fantastic, and it has more of a class analysis than New Labour - and even elemetns of Old Labour.

Basically, the Uk greens are very different from Fischer and most other EU greens (including our own here in Ireland).

If Bush was wondering if the effects of global warming are real, he may get to feel one very direct effect; that of losing his presidency!

The last president to be impeached was able to finish his term. Bush cannot run for his office again without suspending or amending the Constitution. Of course Bush was trying to do this. Look at the Superdome. Bush lured and trapped 4 million negros and democrats in this terrordome and was ready to have them all killed. Once this voting block was eliminated he would be able to turn LA into a red state, change the Constituion and continue the Blitzkrieg in the Middle East. Unfortunately, CNN, Celine Dion, Sean Penn and CNN called FEMA.

And wasn't 'getting involved in people's lives and saving them' the justification for invading Iraq, btw?

Is there actually an ideological conflict within this administration, between neocons who want to use government power to remould the world and other conservatives who claim to want to reduce government involvement?

My apologies I did not see this utill after I did the above post.

You can always count on a rich old cunt to bare her fangs as she cackles about the poor getting fucked over.

Barbara Bush on those lucky refugees

man, i have always wanted to live in a shelter for months on end. and the astrodome is pretty nice, i hear. i'm pretty open, so i don't need privacy or anything. you'd get to meet some interesting people there, too, what with all the cots in rows. and all the kids could play together. sounds like paradise to me.

and don't forget...the Astrodome is in the middle of one of the poshest neighborhoods in Houston...:ignore:

Seriously, how bad is the neighborhood of the Astrodome? The United Center (Chicago) is an upper ghetto elite area.

Well...back in the day, the only neighborhood worse was the Fifth Ward....

but just talked to a friend of mine in Houston, and she says that with all the new development going on around the Astrodome, it's not nearly as bad as it was say 5 years ago...

so looks like I might have been WRONG!!!

I feel the need to enlighten some people on the facts regarding laying so much blame on the federal govt and on Pres Bush. I live in Baton Rouge, LA the capitol city about 60 miles west of New Orleans. I think that first of all there will be plenty of blame to go around from the local municipal govt of New Orleans on up to the President. But, it is completely careless to blame this all on the federal govt and especially the incumbent president. First of all, this has been an issue in New Orleans since the levee and pump systems were installed. Many other presidents and mayors and Louisiana governors were neglectful before the present administration even took office in 2000. Now just to let everyone know, in 1995 the federal government allocated 3 BILLION dollars to the municipality of New Orleans to assist with the strengthening and expansion of the levee system. At that time, this tragedy could have been prevented under the watchful eye of President Clinton. In fact, the local govt of New Orleans was in essence braggin about having the funds available to fix the levee. Now the real tragedy happened. In 1998 the same local govt agency who was braggin about having the funds to fix the levee used only 1.9 million dollars of the funds towards strengthening levees and updating pumping stations. Effectively, the money for the levee was squandered and even returned to the federal govt going unused. Don't be so quick to blame Bush for EVERYTHING. He will have plenty of blame to SHARE with Local municpal and state governments.

Baton Rouge has become unbearable nearly. The traffic which was already a problem has become an hour drivetime for just the shortest commute. Hospitals are overloaded with patients, shelters are overloaded, there is not a hotel room to be found for ages, and our native Baton Rouge folks cannot get an apartment or condo because FEMA has bought all the vacancies for 3 years. So, if a young person was wanting to move out of mom and dad's house to live on their own...not gonna happen for a LONG LONG time. Our police are being overwhelmed by the influx of people and our public assistance centers are clogged to capacity from 7 am to midnight with people applying or receiving government assistance. I am a home health nurse and I am finding that we are getting so many patients who fled their homes leaving behind medications and medical records. It is nearly impossible to admit these people into our care with no vital information not to mention that the physicians taking care of these people are unable to be reached or found for that matter. Baton Rouge is carrying the major load of the relief in this ordeal and I hope that everyone in my hometown steps up. And this whole racial divide that Black Americans are trying to drudge up is a bunch of BULLSHIT. I am a white upper-middle class American which makes me in the eyes of black americans the enemy who is trying to keep them down. I tell you the truth, I was volunteering my nursing services in Baton Rouge at the medical triage facility and as I looked around I saw blacks helping whites, whites helping blacks and any other combination that you can imagine. So, I don't want to hear about the FICTIONAL race issue with the relief and response. Anyways, remember to pray for the good people and citizens of Baton Rouge too who are trying to provide relief, hope, medical attention, and good will for those victims.

Best of luck to you and others Shad in dealing with this difficult sitaution, and thanks again for the reminder that life down there for everybody will not return to "normal" for a very, very long time, even after NO is drained of the toxic water.
