from my study of the subject, i'd have to say that, christians on the whole are far more relaxed about these issues, beacause, if you are a believing christian, than you know that the people who produce these things are just wrong.

i'm trying hard to find some scriptural reference for this. the best i can do is that it is OK for Christians to eat with pagans even if they offer food to their gods, because well it just doesn't mean anything. that is the closest i can do, but i will have to do here.

it doesn't of course mean that some Christians won't get mightily upset about things like the piss Christ.

But now I read that in Malaysia, "it is now an offence to publish, import, produce, manufacture, circulate, distribute or possess caricatures that may "jeopardize public harmony and safety, which may cause chaos, or endanger public peace or national interest."

That may cause chaos? To possess? WTF? Civil liberatarians in the U.S. would (you'd think) go apeshit over that. So, dirty cops will now plant cartoons on a perp and be charged with possession?

In a somewhat unrelated note, some movie reviewer used the word "sniggering" in a review recently, and it came up on the site rottentomatoes.com as "s******ing."

Actually I think there _is_ more of a case for having a go at Christians than at Muslims - it comes down to power. At least in this country, the UK. Christians have more money on average, and Christianity is the state religion - I was obliged to sing Christian hymns at my state school, not Muslim prayer - religious broadcasting is obligatory for the TV companies, and in practice that means Christian programs, and Christian leaders get automatic seats in the House of Lords. And its Christianity that is protected by a blasphemy law.

So when one annoys Christians one is kicking back at people with power, while having a go at Muslims can be simple bullying of those with less power. Plus much of the real Christian-baiting comes from people within the Christian culture - wasn't that 'Piss Christ' by someone raised as a Christian himself? That's different from bashing a culture from outside. Only someone raised a Christian would consider that thing to be remotely interesting as art.
I notice it mostly seems to be people raised within the Christian tradition who go in for all the Christian-baiting devil worshipping nonsense - didn't Marilyn Manson use to be a choir-boy?

Still, much of what passes for religious outrage seems to be something else in disguise. Like when those Sikhs disrupted that play in Birmingham - I think that wasn't about religion at all, it was about a bunch of self-important patriarchs upset at their authority being challenged (the play was written by a Sikh woman after all). Likewise I think the Islamic anger about the cartoons is probably really about other things.
