Listening to the first Journey album now (in a cafe). The first album had enormous cred-- the band was a Santana offshoot, after all-- then the band abandoned their claim to serious musicianship to pursue pop stardom.
Must be other bands out there that started out with such promise only to throw it all away for commercial success...
Shamen (pre-C awesome, Post-C, utter wank, even Colin's gated Westone guitar could not keep me listening)
Happy Mondays (Step on made me Step OFF, although Kinky Afro was one more highlight after that)
Goldfrapp (cos the last album of theirs I heard had 8 versions of the same 6/8 time glam rock riff and fuck all else on it)

Steve, the point is that you have to imagine Alison Goldfrapp grinding her crotch into your face in time with said 6/8 glam rock riff.
Then you'll understand the point of the latest Goldfrapp long player.

The Proclaimers - okay they didnt have any cred, but "Sunsine on Leith" was a widely popular although shite album, but who knows what happened to them?
FATBACK - Bus Stop - once again, dont think they had any cred either, but that one song that everyone danced that stupid dance to in the late 80's was also v.popular, but lol, did they even bother to release an album. Maybe they knew they were shite.
RIGHT SAID FRED - enuff said, born shite, remains shite.
EMINEM - first few albums were listenable, now he goes ahead and releases a mix tape (what the?).
BLOC PARTY - Silent Alarm was absolute brilliance, then they release TWO MORE YEARS (very worthy), then they come out with their new album "A weekend in the city" - which in my mind is absolute crap apart from that one song "The Prayer"....**okay i shouldnt be talking about an unreleased album, but hey we live in the internet age, everythings available ahead of time if you look in the right places**.

I think the last time I bought a record cos of wanting to do an involved female was when I was about 13....I got some funny attitudes to music thereafter, and one of them is hating anything that is sold on sex. Having said that, it's a good point well made, and Miss G is well doable for an auld doll.
It's just that none of the tunes are a patch on lovely head[1] the first of theirs I ever heard, that vocal filtration thing through the synth just knocked me dead) or utopia or pilots.

I agree with you on DM, sadly. The first two post-Wilder albums were very weak, although Playing the Angel was rather good. Although Alan Wilder played on Songs of Faith and Devotion, he seemed absent from the album, kind of like Hooky's absense from Republic. Actually, SOFAD is a lot like Republic, for both albums followed what is considered the band's pinnacle of their work and are both considered artistic let downs. If the album had synths on it, it wouldn't have been bad, but the excessive, boring guitars and religious lyrics (they seem to have forgotten "Blasphemous Rumors") make it very sub-par to Violator. If you watch any live footage from that tour, aside from Dave looking strung out and Martin not setting foot near a keyboard, Alan looks like he wants to run off the stage and get the hell out of there. I don't really blame him, either.
The Beatles lost it, then got it again. Quite a feat.
U2 have to be the most severe case of cred loss ever though. What is that all about?

To me DM albums are :
Music for the Masses Ultra Violator Black Celebration and... Playing the Angels
I have some others... They are more like pieces of my record collection than anything else.

Some of the early stuff I can understand, but those are top albums

I meant that out of Construction Time Again, Some Great Rewards and Black Celebration I have no interest in the songs which are not singles except Something to do as far as I can remember.
In fact 50% of Black Celebration do not interest me at all (including some singles). Well, I do not like songs like a question of lust, somebody...
I remember that I had People Are People as an American collection of tracks but I cannot tell you who stole me that one. And I do not think these songs were rearranged. By the time, anyway.
I also do not care about remasterisations they release nowadays either... It inteferes with my memories... As Dave Gahan says "it's no good". These songs belong to their time... I do not want to listen to them after a plastic surgery operation today... It sounds too fake to my ears...

There was a play on words with their name. Swap a few letters and it becomes Dépède Moche. If you say that, a French speaking man will understand Des Pèdes Moches which can be translate by : Ugly Gays...
Stupid play on words by the ones who disliked the girlish aspect of that band back in the eighties...

Not exactly. People are People and Catching up with Depeche Mode were released in the US to make DM as more popular than a club band. I believe People are People was their first real hit in the US. Their first three albums, I believe, weren't widely available in the US, and People are People shares several of the same songs as Construction Time Again: Love in itself, Told you so, Everything counts, and Pipeline. But it also has some b-sides on it and A Broken Frame song and Get the Balance right. Catching up with DM, which followed the next year, is more of a chronological singles compilation for the US.

moz has had great commercial success, he no doubt has as many fans as ever. it is only my humble opinion that the smiths made better music. he also canceled the last concert i had tickets to.
