Today I learnt that I had been betrayed by someone I trusted the most. A happy christmas it won't be.

That sounds bad Tim. If it's any consolation, my Christmas is going to be rubbish this year too. Bring on the New Year, at least I have things to look forward to then :(

Where all fuckups a product of society, there would not be a running thread of identical behavior, but rather a more dynamic and evolving history os assholes, as we find with the first subset described above.

[1] It may be argued as well, though I do not know how convincingly, that this group of people would actually turn out bad in any society, but with specifics drawn from that environment.

As to the death penalty......

Premise A: Killers are evil, and should be punished. Premise B: The death penalty is a just way to remove those who murder. Premise C: Execution is the just killing of the guilty. Premise D: Murder is unjust the killing of the innocent. Premise E: execution is carried out by the state in the name, and with the specific consent of, the people.

Conclusion, if just one innocent human has been fried, paralysed or gassed in your state, you are a murderer and should be executed, no ifs, ands or buts.

well in this country murder is legally defined as the unlawful killing of a human being during the queens peace

guess if its the same in the states then if the death sentence has been passed it's not unlawful & therefore not murder.

I'd go further to mention that those that have a difficulty assimilating into society also live off that same society. We have so many programs that support and ensure that these individuals not only keep breathing, but keep breeding as well. I'm under the belief that almost all kids are born about equal in potential... it's the parents and other adults that screw them up. Each has potential to overcome these issues and be helped, but after a certian age/mindset they are set in their ways. The best thing for society is to get rid of these individuals so they don't affect any children. (as MIMX likes to say: Won't somebody think of the children!)

You forgot premise F: Stiff and harsh punishment will hopefully deter others from commiting similar crimes.

People are constantly complaining about the lack of healthcare system, social security, and schooling. Yet we waste billions of dollars everyday feeding, housing, and conducting retrials for individuals that can't be trusted in society. Many of these have been proven unable to change their ways (i.e. child molesters). If released in society, they will only taint more children and screw them up for life... if we house them its a waste of money.

As for your last sentance, that is why we set aside the death penalty for those that are proven to be guilty without a doubt, and have been proven within a court of law that they are a burden to society.
and before people start whipping out examples of innocent people that have been executed, that is very unfortunate and I truely hope it doesn't happen again. But that does not mean we should lay down and allow for diseased people to drain and taint our society.

Well Edel I shake my head.

Remove and eliminate all those who are different and sick. That has been tried before.

You would have fit in well in NAZI Germany.

Frankly I'm astounded that an educated person can advocate or even entertain such sentiments.

You have moved far to the right of the Republicans. I suggest you have a good look at the values that your country was founded on and the the values you fought for. I. E. Declaration of Independence and you Constitution.

A more correct translation of the Commandment is, "Though shalt not Murder". I contend that the taking of any human life when not defending oneself is murder.

Now on Christmas Morning in Oz, Peace to all humanity.

Ron, I think that is a large leap to say getting rid of the unchangable that hurt society (murders, rapists, etc.) is like the 'cleansing' that the Nazis tried to do.

So you prefer to keep these people alive and ding healthcare for law abiding citezens?

You said this about society.

"I'd go further to mention that those that have a difficulty assimilating into society also live off that same society. That is pure NAZI. You had better think about what you want your country to become. The kind of people who advocated the above policies also don't think very highly of mixed-race marriages and their results. Yes, that is the next logical step with your line of thinking.

Perhaps you are learning something now.

Over and out from me on this. It is Christmas.

:confused2:

Ron, I'm talking about a death penalty for people that CHOSE to commit heinous crimes that destroy lives... the type of destruction that impacts society only negatively. These are people clearly beyond help and change... there is absolutely NO purpose for them in society...

Inter-racial marriages might be chosen, but the people still impact positively to society... ethnicity (and to some extent religon) is not chosen, it is what they are born with, and this doesn't stop a positive impact on society.

I know clearly what the Founding Fathers intended for the country and I stand firmly behind those ideals.

The death penalty might make a stomach turn, but what other purpose do these criminals of atrocities have to benefit society? The longer they live, the more they are a drain on regular, law-abiding people.

I'm not advocating to kill all criminals, just those that there is no other recourse for....

oh, and Merry Christmas (it's still afternoon on Christmas eve here.....)

I heard a similar thing about Oxford.

I didn't believe it, mind you, but I did hear it.

I learned a principle in Daoism:

*To respond to good with good - brings good. *To respond to evil with evil - brings good. *To respond to evil with good - brings evil. *To respond to good with evil - brings evil.

I'm sorry if that doesn't sound smooth. I translated it from Chinese. A bit game theory moral. I practiced it already in my family yesterday.

Today I re-learnt that people will believe any old pile of horseshit as long as it allows them to go on behaving abysmally towards others!

Today (well yesterday....£40 fine payable to biggie I suppose for ruined the thread), I learned that a thing I read about in books when I was 5, project Orion, is supposedly a really secret thing that only now can be partially discussed, having been defunct since Kennedy signed the nuke testing treaty.

If you want to know the score then, read kids science books.

Must admit, I wouldn't enjoy serving overpriced, below-par 'food' to people who really should be watching their waistlines. Bet they take one look at you Jenn and think, 'THAT's a girl who doesn't eat where she works'.

I just learned that it'll probably be another 20 years before I go into a McDonald's again...

I learned that WhatABurger was started in Corpus Christi, TX and they still have their headquarters over here.
