The song seemed to disappear for a good few years after its original release for some reason then made a comeback late 90s to become a permanent fixture

There was general consensus that this is another example of political correctness gone mad, that disease seen to be endemic in the national broadcaster.
But David Coulter pointed out that under the BBC's logic "mad" was in itself an offensive term. He proposes "Different State of Mental Stability" as an alternative, adding: "Its Madness Gone PC".
Other readers looked at the practicalities of song writing, pointing out that faggot had to remain as it is the only possible rhyme for the maggot in the preceding line.
PJW, another gay reader, wrote that he does not find the song offensive as it was written at a time when faggot was in common use and considered acceptable.
"To begin altering songs made long ago would mean bleeping out a lot of the music back catalogue," he wrote.
"However, if the song was made today and directed at homosexuals solely then I do think that would be a whole different story."
Ronan Keating sang Fairytale on Gay Byrnes late show and had to sing "You're cheap and you're haggard". Can't remember the other amendments
God! Is the song about a minute long then after the edits? BBC not always reliable for common sense. Remembering back to last time I saw REPO MAN, I was most offended when Emilio Estevez uttered the line FLIP YOU MELON FARMER!

The song is about Irish immigrants in America, hence 'Fairytale Of New York'.
'Faggot' is entirely appropriate for the song as the word was already in use in the USA in the 1930's when/where the story of the song is supposedly set.
Doesn't matter if 'Faggot' is in use in this country or not
When my band used to perform the song live, the lyrics were MUCH more offensive
