Ally wrote: It's easy to sit with Wikipedia and a few pretentious extreme left wing historical books at your disposal and mock what happened close to 100 years ago, Andrew. Fucking hell, you're really breaking new ground and showing all us fuddy duddies how deluded we are? Nice one, I'll start burning the Union Jack tomorrow morning first thing.

As I said I'm not particularly nationalistic being a Scotsman living in London but people like yourself and Cambo's earlier comments branding the UK as "sliding towards Nazi Germany" do irritate me somewhat. Not because they have even the remotest basis in fact (natch) but because armchair commentators like yourselves seem to think that you are somehow remotely qualified to construct such statements in the first place. The arrogance kind of irks me.

Give me a break, I came across loads of people like you at university... Ooooh you're soooo radical slagging off the West and decadence in general. How revolutionary... yawn. Oh no, you're not going to brand us Tories are you?

Student Grant and The Modern Parents from Viz immediately spring to mind here.

Ally, listen, I should not have brought that up where I did, hand up, my bad...even though I genuinely did feel horrible at the time I posted it. Let me be clear re: the nazi thing....when one mentions that, one gets this "we don't burn people" thing. Neither did they to start with. The horror that was Nazi Germany or Stalin's Russia didn't start with the huge historic evils we remember them for, they started with enforced carrying of ID cards, removal of the right to take photographs, refusing a search being an offence, police vetting of entertainments (seen what the met are up to lately?). This country's a whole lot better than a totalitarian state, but what scares me is how close we might let things get to that. That looney bitch Smith and her "databases fix everything, so I want all your DNA records" is gonna fuck us all up mate. What about the enhance CRB checks where all I would have to do to prevent, Liam or Nora or LJ from ever working again would be to phone the peelers and say they touched my kid up....even if they are not found guilty by a court, even if they are not charged, even if it is proved beyond all doubt that it was a false accusation, because...well for one thing I HAVE no kids.....it remains on their enhanced CRB results for ever....with no note to say "turned out to be ballix".

And to bring this back to where we started, I will tell you who I hear these same sentiments from when I'm in work....the men who stood at those memorials on Sunday morning remembering all their friends. More than once I've heard "I fought, and my friends died to prevent this sort of thing you know!".

Let's be clear....it was his conjecture that your lot are the best posters round here that I felt must be the result of cerebral trauma. There's a few good looney yanks round here (hi there!), but some of your countrypersons are just dull and or severely intellectually sub-normal.

Remember you have the freedom to vote in this country - a choice that was made possible by the brave people who you show a complete lack of respect for.

I'll leave it to others to comment on the British situation, but that same argument is made here in the U.S., and at least here in the U.S., it's nonsense. With the exception of our war for independence, not one of our many, many wars has ever been about American "freedom." Still, it's taken as gospel that that's the reason lives were sacrificed.

All that said, I agree, we shouldn't forget those whose lives were cut so tragically short.

WWII doesn't fit in there? maybe even a possible WWI? How about the War of 1812? The Spanish-American War? :confused2:

Korean and Vietnam (though not essentially a war) can be called into question, but the fear of communisium taking over American freedom was real....

Granted the present wars aren't, but that's because we've taken on a different role in the world since WWII ended...

i don't think it's really fair to lump what mr king said in with what cambo said.

also, i feel cambo makes a good point about salami tactics. besides, surely we are all qualified - as voters - to give our opinion on the way we are governed?

i have to confess i'm not entirely sure why cambo's comments were deemed so out of place on the remembrance thread. in my opinion 'lest we forget' doesn't refer only to all those brave people who fought on our behalf, but also to the lessons we learn from history in the hope of preventing it happening again. perhaps it could have been expressed a little more delicately, but i feel the sentiment of seeking to protect/not take for granted the freedoms our servicemen and women died defending is a fine way to honour their memory...

WWII doesn't fit in there?

Had we not fought WWII, we would still have had our freedom. Hitler would have been quite content to make peace with the UK and the US, as long as he was left free to dominate the continent. Japan was not a threat to us either. In short, WWII was not about preserving American freedom (although with Hitler, who knows, he might have taken us on later). Regardless, I think we went to war for the right reasons, and as a result, WWII was our noblest military effort.

EdelBrock wrote: maybe even a possible WWI?

American freedom wasn't at stake in WWI.

EdelBrock wrote: How about the War of 1812?

The British weren't threatening our right to vote. They were boarding American merchant ships and pressing British citizens and deserters back into the Royal Navy. Perhaps we had a legitimate right to dispute that practice, as well as their effort to restrict our trade with France. But was our freedom to vote at stake? No.

EdelBrock wrote: The Spanish-American War? :confused2:

You can't be serious.

EdelBrock wrote: Korean and Vietnam (though not essentially a war) can be called into question, but the fear of communisium taking over American freedom was real....

There wasn't a snowball's chance in hell that either the Koreans or the Vietnamese would ever have the capacity to imperil American freedom. In Korea, we can at least say that we were opposing North Korean aggression, but how is it that we were at war on Vietnamese soil, telling them what they could and could not do, and our justification is that we were stopping their aggression?

most asian states you can still buy human beings. do you have any national pride ?

There are many reasons, but the biggest problem is in education. For a developed nation it is severely lacking, so much so that we have to recruit most of our engineers, doctors and IT professionals from India and China. Other issues relate to decadence such as alcohol over use and general over-consumption.

Garbage. Ill-informed, at best. My department numbers perhaps 30 strong and 20+ of them are Mumbai based. We don't recruit from India because of any educational issues. We recruit because of cost. Nothing more. Quantity, not quality. And, in all honesty, given our projected figures as far as 2010 there ain't gonna be a whole lot between UK and India figures by then. Certainly not enough to make it worth our while.

It appears you are a Yorkshireman also. One thing I have never understood about the North - Yorkshire in particular - is just how much the locals revel in boorishness. Scotland and Wales have poverty yet are reasonably desirable to most people. Yorkshire and Lancashire are ridiculous though: exaggerated accents, boorishness and inwardness are the order of the day here. A lot of this misplaced pride I am sure is a defence mechanism for not actually having anything worthwhile to say. Even when they move south (aren't they selling out their northerness in that case??) they are still utterly unbearable.

Not that you're one to stereotype? Are you suggesting EVERYBODY from Yorkshire/Lancashire are like that? Maybe you think EVERYBODY from your neck of the woods has the right ideas.

no, in fact I am indifferent to Bristol. Its just that everybody on here has a pop at the home counties in particular implying somehow that behaving discreetly and politely is somehow effeminate

Everybody on here? :brow:

I can assure you I've never had a pop at anybody on here (or otherwise) for their birthplace/current home.

In fact, I think in the 4 years I've frequented this site I've never actually had a pop at anybody.

Until now.

Well done - you're my first.

Is this some sort of a game - coming on here and picking on the least-offensive and thoughtful people?

Starting on JT is crazy - he's the top of the pile when it comes to integrity, unless I missed something.

And calling foul on Lancashire and Yorkshire for having funny voices and picking on Southerners? What a load of shit. At least we're not all a bunch of lavender-scented ponces like everyone who's not from a proper county is.

Stop picking on the home counties? Nae lad! Next you'll be asking us to be nice to the Americans :nono:

Bristol - fucking hell

Yeah and of course its not snide to start a thread attacking one individual user. He could just as easily carried on the debate properly in the original thread. But dont let fact get in the way of your argument. In fact to be frank almost every post from the British contingent is tainted with snide contempt.

OK, just in case anyone didn't read what was posted on the Remembrance Day thread, Special boy wrote that he couldn't be arsed with it, hated squaddies, the nostalgic old hard men and the tory women that go with it.

Now, I take exception to that in the same way as I take exception to little tossers who sit on their local memorials, drinking cider, adding their graffiti etc. If you don't give an arse Andrew, why demonstrate how immature you are? Why not just ignore it? Remembrance day is about respect, respect for people who have lost their lives or had their lives ruined because they were involved in a war. Many were conscripted so had no choice, went and died. Many went because their friends did, hence Accrington lost an entire generation. Before you start whining about having a choice, it was a different world and if it's a worse world we live in it is because we are producing self righteous little pillocks like yourself.

So rather than argue on a thread dedicated to something I have the utmost respect for I sent you an open message in the way of a thread titled 'Andrew King you are a cock', I then proceeded to state the obvious.

Jeezus, you do facking exaggerate, don't you?

Or, which is more likely, don't you think you've completely just misjudged the pace of this place and are reading something between the lines which simply isn't here? The Americans appear to have even grasped the concept of 'piss-taking', is this something so alien to you?

Quite frankly though, I think your comments about Remebrance Day were completely misjudged. And it appears I'm not the only one. As I said earlier, your only other contribution to this forum I distinctly remember was about Pink Floyd in a thread about Richard Wright's death. Possibly just humour on your behalf but it came from leftfield and appear rather lumpen in content. But I don't know you and I don't know anyone who knows you so it's obviously hard to judge when someone's trying to be funny, or just genuinely trying to be a cunt.
