Let me tell you about Islam. No disrespect to anyone but (apart from Buddhism, sitting under a tree meditating) the whole story is ridiculous. Now, I'm not disputing that some bloke called Muhmmaed lived in Mecca around 650AD and did a bit of preaching and got some followers. But the story goes like this, Mecca was full of people worshipping false gods and icons and paying a shitload of money to do it (sounds a bit like watching New Order, but i digress...) Muhammed doesnt like this, so goes up to some cave in the mountains for a few days to pray, and apparently the Angel Gabriel appears to him and says a few things (basically, there is one god and he is Allah) and tells Mohammed to spread the word. And he tells his wife, and she becomes the first muslim (apparently Muhammed wasnt a Muslim by that logic). And then his follwers grow, they get kicked out of Mecca, then they come back (which is cutting a long story short but what can yuo do). Then there's a BATTLE* which the Muslims win and whoever was originally in mecca at the time is kicked out. Muhammed then dies and ASCENDS TO HEAVEN IN SEVEN STAGES ON A FLYING HORSE. A fucking horse! Which flys! Fuck me.
Christianity is almost as bad. The whole ascension to heaven doesnt wash with me. But I dont dispute that there was some bloke called Jesus who had a number of followers around jerusalem about 2000 years ago.

Funny thing is, some left wing scholars subscribe to a belief that Yank foreign policy is due to the expansionist mindset, yet suggest the same to them about Islam and the spread of and the desire of many Muslims to convert the whole world they'll just ignore you. You are missing a point in Islam though, and the main problem with it is that its splintered into two groups... one that follows the Kuran (which is not a bad book) and others that follow Muhammeds actions (which contradict the Kuran). The latter have been dubbed 'extremists', but really they believe Muhammed's actions are more important than the book.
I do think its wrong to take a swipe at all Islamists and classifying them all under one umbrella... as this clearly is not the case.

In addition I hear the Bali bombers have been executed, fair enough. To be honest though most of the Aussies and Brits frequenting those barsand clubs were hedonists, dumping their excesses on someone elses doorstep. Its a poor country but a pleasant one I can imagine how inflammatory that must be for some locals.

Even without the oil the middle east has always been successful. I mentioned India because the cultural and trade exchanges between the gulf and the subcontinent have been constantly back and forth. India has the largest muslim population on the planet. Most of Maths and Comp sci has origins there, Binary code was developed by Indian and arab mathematicians.

Already mentioned earlier, Arabs kept science from being lost after the fall of the Roman Empire, and then it was transfered over to the Catholic Church. In those times the ME was a thriving place of science and growth (when Pingala was around)... Islam stamped that out, and within 50 years all of science was gone in the ME. To think ME and India are thriving places for science (i.e. math) you really need to get yer head on straight...
