If you had your own record company, what would you call it?

This kinda relates to the "tribute CD" forum, as Spotty's ideas for a label name on the CD got me thinking. Let's say somehow you were able to start your own record label (some of you have enough cash to do so, I'm sure). What would you call it? Would you stick with one particular form of music or style, or would you have a diverse roster?

My cousin a while back suggested "Chronic Town" (the name of REM's first ep) as a possible band name for a group that we never did get around to starting, so I kind of like that as a label name. Others I've thought about: Taboo #7 Productions (in fact, I think a few of the tapes I've made for others have born that label); 9-Day Wonder Records; Popular Front; Sister Ray......Those are the ones I can remember right now, if I think of any others or remember some I forgot I'll add to the list.

I think I'd call it something like "Fookin' Good Records".

trout recordings. after kilgore trout.

oh, and as i dislike seafood it would have that important tinge of irony, as well.

I guess I would name it after my own business, retroforward studios.

I'd call it "Drop" (myriad connections to this name) and focus on dub, drum 'n bass and alt country sounding bands (hate all those labels, but it gives you the ballpark idea).

My wife's oldest nephew has a band. The name under wich they release their demos is "Nice Cup of Tea Records"!

Anyway, rest assured that I'll never plug them here...

There's already a Looking Good Records, I think it's the drum and bass section of Good Looking Records, anyway they're both LTJ Bukem's. You'd probably end up with a law suit on your hands.

Think I would call it: Unsound. Probably some other job would be needed to make some money as it would not be the greatest name from a marketing point of view :)

i like that one. nice ring to it... i second that; it would be fitting for bands that would come out of Manchester, which is, of course, where New Order is from.

Finding a good name is always difficult.

Factory had its roots in the history of Manchester of course, hence why it was a good name.

I struggled a long time to find a name for my own company, I've used Logicom for years because it was the name of the entreprise I had with a friend of mine, but it was his idea and his former entreprise name, I took it back, but I never really enjoyed having a name I didn't pick myself.

While in the tribute album process, I realized Digital Republic would indeed be a good name.. problem is, in Quebec you need to have a french version of the name, and the french translation wasn't really good. Altough, it turns out it might be accepted if you put it in a french way, so the entity name is now "Communications Digital Republic" or "Les logiciels Digital Republic", and their english equivalents, which will be most likely useful, than those one.

For an internet or software company, it's not bad.. but for a label, it might not be so bad, but I'd probably prefer using my "other" pre-Internet bulletin board name, hence "Alternative Worlds" :thumb:

My first BBS was called The Fortress of Shadow, but I'll leave that one out ;)
