when did they send the national guard to viet-nam? wouldn't the guard responsible for the nation's security need to stay here, ya'know, guarding the national and all?

GWB's squadron was on the list of those that could have been called up.

Bush flew with the 111th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, which was attached to the 147th Fighter Wing, based in Houston, Texas. While Bush's unit never got called to Vietnam, the 147th was. From 1968 through 1970, pilots from the 147th participated in operation "Palace Alert" and served in Southeast Asia during the height of the Vietnam War. And he was never AWOL - he completed his required service and even served beyond the minimum.

Too bad he didn't just enlist in the military, and volunteer to serve in Vietnam- I guess they didn't tell him that was an option when he was in prep school.

IN RE SUVs. I really do not give a shit about gas milage, if you can afford it, buy it. But small cars suck ass. I know, I own a Tracer. But ever since I bought this here Jaguar XJ-S, 5.3l HE V-12, 14 to 20 mph, 155 mph top speed, in March, I have put maybe 20 miles on the Tracer. Small cars have shitty noisy rides. So do SUVs which is why I do not own one. Jags, on the other hand, smooth, quiet and fast. But with the necessity of replacing the mini-van as the family truckster, a SUV will be considered.

Until then, do not bitch at people that do not want to drive a POS disposable auto. Invent an alternative motor that we can use in the SUV.

What gets me though, is the way those who are most vociferous about going to war are also those who make sure they don't go themselves. Example: There are some "homeless youths" in their early twenties here in PDX who went around picking fights with anti-war protesters during our last war, just to show their support for the war (and just to set the record straight, I didn't protest against the war. I wasn't even against it- then). Now, if these young men are so eager for war, and so eager to fight themselves, why aren't they enlisting? It just seems extremely hypocritical to me for these young men to be vociferously supporting a war, and beating up anti-war protesters, when they're too chickenshit to go themselves.

Same for pampered rich boys like GW. Don't want to go to war? Fine. Just don't go around shooting your mouth off in support of war, while you're hiding out here in the States, and pretending to be in the military.

I have a hell of a lot of respect for someone like John McCain, who put his body where his ideals were, and none at all for a big-mouthed candy ass like GW Bush.

where is the incentive to invent this alternative? if what we have works for the short-term, and people are willing to shell out $$ for gas (increasing our dependency on foreign oil), why should any automotive company spend the time and money in research, production, and advertising? it is the people that don't want to drive your so-called "disposable" cars that are feeding into the system, and creating complacency on behalf of the auto industry.
