New Order live @ Henry J Kaiser Arena - Oakland (USA) - 2005.04.29

I was up against the rails front and center at the show last night (which was amazing). On either side of Bernards monitor were 2 what I call teleprompters. I thought it might have been the setlist, but they were scrolling throughout the entire show. Can anyone explain this? Is Bernard getting Alzheimers?

He's been using them for a while. For one reason or another he needs a bit of help remembering the lyrics. The issues been done to death on here and it doesnt bother me.

Were any of you those 35+ year old men I saw Madchester dancing to that DJ?

Reflecting on Friday night's show...

I got a good spot at the barrier near stage right, in front of the speaker bank where Hook frequently came and played rock star. He was hilarious with his deadpan expressions and cheap "guitar god" tricks like bass-behind-the-back. I flashed the "you rock" devil-horns hand gesture, and he gave what I assume was an "I-see-you-get-the-joke" smile.

Barney kept referring to the show's location as "San Francisco" and told us to "be sure to wear some flowers in your hair." There were shouts of "Oakland, we're in Oakland!" but he obviously couldn't hear them. If Barney were to read this I'd tell him that Oakland is a distinctly different place from San Francisco and that, if you are playing anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area other than San Francisco, say that it's great to be in <that town's name> and how are you doing tonight, <that city's name>? (To a previous poster: "San Francisco gig" means San Francisco Bay Area gig, not gig for San Francisco proper.)

Funny how, as Barney was attributing the inspiration for BLT to a love triangle involving Hook and Stephen, Stephen and Phil appeared to shut Barney the hell up by hastily starting the BLT program, which caught Barney off-guard. Also funny how he had prompters with song lyrics and chords--and that he actually used them and still messed up a couple of times.

I hope the sick guy next to me got home OK. He just leaned against the barrier with his head down and eyes closed, as if he were asleep, even as Hook was doing his thing just four feet from him (Hook was noticeably puzzled and even nudged the guy's head with the bass). Eventually the guy was fed water and later was lead away.

During the CBs' set I saw Barney discreetly darting in and out of the wing at stage right. I thought maybe he would sing on the CBs' "Out of Control" or even on their "Temptation," but no, he didn't.

The set list was great, and my only real complaint about it was that they didn't play every single damn song in their entire catalog. The JD songs were a bit obvious, but I thought "Run Wild" was a surprisingly good choice. And the newer stuff was great. Was so happy to see everyone rocking out to "Crystal," one of my all-time favorite NO songs.

About an earlier poster's question--that was a version of Massive Attack's "Protection," if I'm correctly remembering the next-to-last piece of music played between the CBs and NO's sets.

It was a fantastic performance! The band were really enjoying the show and Bernard was in his joyful mood all the time. :)

The DJ and the Chems really exhausted me and others - you have to keep in mind that a great deal of people had travelled from far and without sleep and all that. I was almost sleepwalking by the middle of the Chem's set. But here come NEW ORDER!

Indeed the show started with a suprise, "She's Lost Control". Then "Love Vigilantes" which for a few first seconds I took for "Vietnam".. how could I?? And also when I saw Bernard bringing out his melodica I thought it would be for "Your Silent Face" and I thought... hm.. that's kinda too early to bring that tune.

Crystal was the most energetic song in the show - Bernard even took off the mic and just went so excited about the song. By the way I didn't feel that Bernard was heavy in the telepromters - he sang quite freely and I got the impression, by his acrobatics, that he wasn't using one. He was very natural.

The sound mix was really guitar-heavy and that added edges to regularly softener sounding songs.

By the way I managed to take pictures with my camera but I was not close enough to the stage and all the focus went on the heads before me... Plus that security concern, almost dead batteries blah blah...

I know the quality is shit but anyway here's Bernard during "Run Wild" (yes, my jaw dropped down).

The end of Blue Monday (encore) was kinda hectic - Hooky still kept trying out something out of his drum pads when the song practically was over - Steve and Phil were doing their best to put an end to the song with their sequencers. It was cool to see indeed!!!

After one song (I don't remember, in the middle of the set) Bernard thanked in French which was kinda out of place and but in a second he thanked again in English this time.

And I was really happy to see all those people coming all over the nation and overseas to the show. My special regards to two nice gentlemen, with whom I hanged around most of the day: Jeff and Alan (Green), saw Al and Mark, and the Pope and April. And other Texans: the guy from Houston who stayed at Courtyard (not Jeff), JAG from San Antonio who was lucky enough to catch Hooky's drumstick. And all punks around, ha ha

All in all a great show! And all complaints must be turned down - NO've had so much great stuff in their catalogue by now that it's really tough to choose. Grateful for the cool performance.

Yeah I saw him also at stage left during the chems. I waved at him and got a cool smirk. He seemed to be enjoying the Chems, but I did not see him plugging his ears

First post to the New Order Online website. So I went to the Oakland Concert, which I thought was awesome.

Here's my little sum-up (it ain't meant to be a spam), but it's kinda long.

I agree whole heartedly that Oakland is distinctly different, however for recording purposes etc, people around the world can identify with San Francisco much easier than Oaktown. Barney knew where he was. The T-Shirts even stated San Francisco

• Black w/ white text "NO" w/ "NEW Order North America 2005" and tour dates on the back (This is the one I got)

• "New Order" white w/ blue text that I think was in the True Faith font

They also had a few NO pins for sale- for ten bloody bucks!

I think the Chems went on too long, their break wasn't for an encore but ended up feeling like an entire second set. Still really cool to hear Temptation/Star Guitar and all the other big beat hits. They're the perfect opener for NO, as long as they keep their set in check and give the headliners time to get properly set up and have time to play a full set. Both Barney and Roger Lyons were sidestage on the Philc side listening in. Roger also was the one who set up the autocues, as there's actually a pair, to the left and right of the micstand...that answers that question. And Sarge was prowling around too.

Great to meet Al and Johnny Giles as well as Jeff The Chef, Biznotic, and His Holiness. I was right against the barrier right in front of Hooky, who at one point (playfully) brushed the head of one of the security guys. We chatted up this guy after the gig, turns out he had seen the Order back in '83 at both SF (*real* SF, not Oakland) gigs. Saw some tall French-looking guy beyond the barrier taking pictures, presume that was the Sultan.

Really good set, though as others pointed out, Jetstream didn't quite have the intended effect. Run Wild was a big shock to have in the set. I'm hoping there will be similar surprises in store tonight!

Well, at least you went. So you liked nothing that wasn't either JD or Love Vigilantes. At least you enjoyed a part of it, Bernard's and Hooky's between-song quips were classic NO...maybe middling because it's the first-of-tour, but still a very pleasant, enjoyable gig. Next time (if there is a next time) try getting out front instead of standing back with your shades drawn.

I look forward to seeing how the Gang Of Four sounds in comparison...

I'll be seeing them later today...I'll let you know.

I think you were standing next to my American friend, the lad with the black hair, shorts and plad shirt, about 6ft. I think he even asked you how much your shirt was before the show, while we were sitting down on the floor while everyone found their places? I was to his right, blue jeans, blue shirt and glasses. Nice one.

I take back what I said about the Chemical Brothers; they're actually starting to grow on me. I was just kind of mad that they were holding up New Order. There were also a few obnoxius fans who tired to push their way in front of me.

The crowd during the NO set was a little nuts. As soon as they took the stage, I suddenly felt a wave of people behind me push toward the stage, jostiling everyone near the front of the stage. I was tossed around like a dinghy during a storm. When it was over, I realized that my pants (trousers for you U.K. folks!) had come unbuttoned in the melee!
