New Order live @ Aragon Ballroom - Chicago (USA) - 2005.05.03

Anyone suggesting a meet up venue for drinks before?  2 Lads from Manchester living in Minneapolis, flying in day of and staying over.  Any info on after gig scene would be appreciated.

You better believe it. It's New Order, in a theatre, walking distance from home and you need two support acts to justify the price. A few people on here might like a quiet word.

OldMonkey....he is probably referring to his second ticket....I thought the prices were a little steep as well...especially for a General Admission ticket....Although, I would have paid any price to see this band...luckily, money is not much of an issue for me like it was in high school or college...I am happy to spend any  amount to see the greatest band in the world perform!

Tix (if indeed a word) would surely be plural. The savings that waynescott makes by being able to walk to and from the venue make complaints about the ticket prices a tad hard to swallow. We'll avoid travel issues, hotel expense alone is making this concert expensive for a lot of people not least Americans. I am sure Old Monkey could have framed his insult in a more subtle way but I am equally sure the point would've been lost. No doubt there will be some complaints if they don't play a 3 hour set,there were in '93, God forbid they drop BM, TF, BLT.

Yeah, tickets are a bit steep but without inventing a time machine when else are you going to see NO in a venue smaller than a football stadium?

Meeting up pre-gig? The Green Mill is only a couple blocks away but the drinks are a bit pricey. Beyond that there's really nothing in the neighborhood unless you fancy the sort of joint that just has an awning that says "BEER"...

Unless people feel pressed for time, I'd suggest something a bit farther south such as in Lincoln Park (near the Fullerton Red Line stop). There are tons more choices around there and the Red Lion pub would be nice for the UK'ers attending. From there, it's just a quick walk to the L (subway, although it's not a subway at that point, it's elevated) and a brief ride to Uptown where the gig is (Lawrence stop).

Not actually that Krafty, are you? ;) $118 for two tickets and no other fees is a real result. To put it in perspective, I have paid out $1300 for four of the summer gigs, and were it not for an ungrateful boss who is making me work, would be paying that again in flights alone just to get to the US shows.

Are you people out of your mind?  I paid $165.00 a ticket for U2 at United and paid more for Erasure tickets than New Order tickets at Chicago theatre.

I think the New Order tickets were very fairly priced.  Huge band at a small venue.  I think Depeche tickets 3 years ago was $60.

I have never seen New Order play any longer than about 45-60 minutes by the way.  They didn't in '89 or '93.

For those of you who live in Chicago, or know the answer to this.  I am flying in from Baltimore. Which airport is the closest and do you have an idea of how far away from the airport the club is.   Thanks in advance.

Well, for starters are you going straight to the venue from the airport? That could determine which airport you choose as it's easier via public transportation to get there from Midway I would think (Orange Line to Loop, switch trains at Lake to Red Line subway and go North on Red Line and get off at Lawrence). Otherwise you're taking the Blue Line into the Loop from O'Hare and having to switch trains as well just to go back north-ish).

Neither airport would be considered just next door to the venue but from a purely distance standpoint O'Hare's closer. If you're cabbing it it'd be cheaper from O'Hare because it's simply closer (about a 30-min drive max, unless it's rush hour where you could be talking closer to an hour).

That being said, Southwest's cheap fares to Chicago from Baltimore go to Midway so your choice may have already been made...

The 89 show was around 75 minutes long, and the 93 show was about 65. In 85 at the Bismarck Theater they did 86 minutes, and the Aragon in 86 was 75 mins.

yes :) the Green Mill as its a few blocks west of the Aragon. This was also mentioned in another post by someone else. They open at noon.

i think someone mentioned this. Ohare is closer to the Aragon. Midway is way the hell south. From Midway to the Aragon, it will be about 50 minutes to an hour in rush hour. My fiance works a few miles west of Midway and she can get back up north in 40 minutes with no traffic.

Ohare is about 30-40 minutes to the Aragon because you have to get off at Lawrence and head east with stop and go traffic and rush hour will add to that but there are short cuts you can take to cut time.

Cheers, drugrep, the other day I had the astute frame of mind to make the Corgan connection. Of course he'd hop up there. And I also agree about the prices. Stop whining. These prices are just fine, and in terms of New Order they're a blessing. I'm just happy to be done with finals by then. Probably taking the El. You don't think the set will be long? I can't imagine them passing up BLT, BM, or TF. Would love to hear Here To Stay since it's fresh in our minds, and would love to hear some kind of side project's material although I know thats a stretch. See everyone there!

Thanks a lot Drew.  At this point, I'm not really sure what I'm doing.  A lot has to do with the New York show on May 5th which is by far closer to Baltimore.  I appreciate the info.  Very helpful.

Thanks for the update guys.  Green Mill is like a chain restaurnat right?  Are there any "bar" bars around the venue, or a short cab ride, etc away?  Not familiar with Chicago at all, really, though have been to a plce north of downtown called Sedgwick's which I believe is on Sedgwick and something, was a good crowd there.  Anyone reading this familiar with this place - and if so how far from the Aragon?

On another note, been fun to read everyone's various thoughts and opinions spanning the last 20 plus years or so.  Now in my 30's, look back with extremely fond memories of afternoons/nights down Oldham Street in Dry, and then a quick jaunt over to the Hac, remembering what a big deal it was to run into the various members of the Factory gang.  Also, MP keeping the masses entertained, seeing ACR regularly, and Rob Gretton's - Rob's Records opening - a great night!  Then stop in Rusholme for a curry on the way home.  What a scene!  Good times, great memories.  All good things have a shelf life.

Looking forward to having a good night in Chicago.

green mill is a cozy jazz lounge. drinks are a little above what they should be price wise, but its right by the aragon. hope you have a great time and can meet some of us @ the green mill before the show and neo afterwards.

Hip music is often played in the background while dozens of screens broadcast different sports. It is the nicest and newest bar in the immediate area of the Aragaon. You must be 21 and over and like all Chicago bars that ID at the door: no ID or passport, no entry.

Well, as I said earlier there are a LOT of bars just a couple miles south of the Aragon in Lincoln Park. There's a decent English pub (run by an actual Englishman! lol) called the Red Lion which should be nice for the UKers in attendance - they serve food too. It's on Lincoln just north of Fullerton, right next door to the old Lounge Ax (RIP). There are a few bars within a half-block of the Red Lion as well, such as the Gin Mill which is just a few buildings to the north. All these are within a block of the L at Fullerton too (public transit train, the same line that will drop you off right next door to the Aragon on Lawrence).

So don't limit yourselves to what's immediately around the Aragon, which isn't much. People could share a cab from Lincoln Park up to the venue and it would be pretty cheap.

Well, I work downtown at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Erie and Michigan Ave, basically) so I'll likely just be taking the L to the venue, and most likely Metra back unless my wife decides to go and drives downtown to meet me - she's not the biggest NO fan and at this point may not be going. Last train to Naperville leaves Union Station at 12:40 AM so hopefully all the festivities will be done by midnight at the latest in order to make it in time...

Yeah, for all those visiting Chicago, do yourselves a favor and enjoy the bars and restaurants closer to the city. Down towards Lincoln Park would definitely ease you into a good mood for the concert. Clean area. Rush street is pretty sweet and swanky with plenty of people watching and nice places. And by early May with temps up into the 60s around evening, places will have their doors and windows open.

Yuck, stay away from the Rush St. bars unless you're a frat boy who wants nothing but to grope... If you want cool hipster bars with great people watching, go to Wicker Park or Bucktown instead. Far better scene and you've got a cool record store in the area too (Reckless on Milwaukee).

Wicker Park/Bucktown is a bit far from the venue though, it's about twice as far as Lincoln Park is. So if you're planning on cabbing it, keep that in mind.

The Gold Star.  Division St.  about a few blocks west of Ashland.  A nice neighborhood dive bar.  Good, cheap, strong drinks.  Doesn't look like much from the outside,  but that's by design to keep all the riff-raff out.  No frat types or Lincoln Park trixies found here, just cool, laidback Wicker Park residents and drinkers.   Highly recommended!

Suggestion: Green Mill, 2 blocks west of Aragon on Broadway and just north of Lawrence.

Why? Cause the concert is on a Tuesday and doors open at 6. If your like me, you want to be of the first to get into the Aragon so you can be as close as possible. TheAragon is pretty big. You can't see the stage well from way in back. The closer the better. If you choose a place in Lincoln Park or closer to Downtown, keep in mind, if your driving (or take a cab), Lake Shore Drive can get nasty in rush hr. Not to mention how shitty traffic is in Lincoln Park to begin with. If your taking the train, expect packed trains heading north from downtown. These trains thin out around Lawrence, but you not only have the New Order show at the Aragon, but also have  Ben Folds concert a few blocks away. Meeting at the Green Mill is the most convenient place to go before the show. If you want to spend money on a cab, get stuck in traffic, or packed like sardines on trains, by all means go for it.

the other bars and areas mentioned are great suggestions if you have time in Chicago, but for the general purpose of seeing New Order, meet at the Green Mill between 4:30 and 6:00 pm and walk over to the Aragon, and be as close to the stage as possible.

haha yeah well i guess you have a point there. Agreed, wicker park and bucktown are very agreeable IMO, its just they didnt come to mind. Its not a straight shot down the El from the Aragon. Not familiar with the bucktown transit, but I know its not only south, but also west of the Aragon. I wouldnt go myself for a concert pregame, jsut cause i'd like to feel better as the clock ticked down that i was closer. Then again, I'll need to find a hangout letting in someone thats 19.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned Berlin yet, it's right by the Belmont stop. I think it's mainly gay during the week but they do have some 80's nights and different crowds all the time. I haven't been there myself but I heard is a fun club.

There's also Panic (80's) on Wednesdays at the Smart Bar, also available thru the red line.

i love berlin :) used to dj there on monday nights a few years back. great club, great atmosphere. the dj's kick ass, especially greg haus. dont think theyd be open that early though for a pre show get together. but if your in town for a few days, stop by and check it out. i forget the exact nights but they went something like this. they also have a website http://www.berlinchicago.com

tuesdays---house, electronic, i think this was the official gay night, or mens night

wednesdays---lesbian night

sundays---old new wave videos, brit pop, type stuff

The GreenMill sounds good even if the drinks are a bit pricey.  I am all for getting to the show on time to get a good spot.  What time does the GM open?

nic, i don't know of too many irish bars but there has to be tons considering  it is chicago, but i do know a  few cool german bars in lincoln square. also a kick ass record store there too and my favorite mexican restauraunt. ps---are you alergic to cats?

I think it's illegal and get taken down right away, so I need to time it so as many people as possible can see it. Also gonna make a bunch of fliers to leave at record stores and to hand out after the show.

Sorry, I do nont work for a printer nor know one that would give us a decent discount to print them.  I may save the jpeg and print it out on my on cheap ass HP using Kodak photo paper.

LOOKING FOR EXTRA TICKET "STUB" FROM CHICAGO SHOW

OK Here is the deal. I collect ticket stubs from the concerts I go to and put them on the flip side of the CD the band is touring on.

I was on vacation last week and had a buddy buy tickets for the Chicago show for me. He chose the ticketmaster option of printing out the tickets on his computer.  Therefore, I am now looking for somebody who will have an extra ticket "stub" from the show.

I am willing to barter and I have two good items. I have an extra Electronic "Vivid" CD1 and a copy of the Monaco setlist (the original I must keep, but I will be happy to make a copy) from the 1997 show at the Metro. Or good ol' cash (not to exceed $5 c'mon).

So somebody please help me out. I will be wearing an England red "Football" jersey at the show or we can swap via regular mail.  I would appreciate if somebody would help me out.

Hi, folks, This is my first post, but I'm a lifelong NO fan. Since somebody asked, I just wanted to let you know that the Aragon doesn't usually allow cameras. The last time I was there was for the Pixies, and they made me take my camera back to my car. As sad as that makes me, it's better to not risk it and lose your place in line. Just go and enjoy the show without worrying about getting all the great shots :)

I hope you all have an amazing time on Tuesday. I can't wait! As I've told my friends, after Tuesday, I can die happy b/c I'll have finally seen New Order live :)

Parking is terrible by the Aragon. I live up in Winnetka (on the lake, north of Chicago) and the El goes all the way to the next town south of me. I plan on parking at the lot and taking the train in. It goes literally past the Aragon. Same routine for Cubs games.

parking will suck cause you have sold out new order show + a sold out ben folds show a few blocks away. so it's almost 10,000 ppl in an already congested area. thank god the cubs are not playing that day.

i plan on parking my car by neo and taking the train, bus, or cab. parking sucks there during the day, but tuesday nights are easy.

It's been almost 20 years since I've seen them. I talked my wife into taking off of work the next day so we can attend the Neo Party.

so...is anyone going to stand outside half the day, or are you all going to go drink before the show? i'm under 21, so i've got nothing else to do, and rather short, so i'll have to be near the front. last time i was at aragon, there weren't many people there (apparently no one wanted to see dave gahan solo), but this show is sold out, so not sure what to expect.

I think I want to get to the Aragon early. I'm not sure what to expect but I've waited this long so I'd like to get a good view.

Depends on the weather. If it's decent out, I'll get there early. If it's cold, I'll get there early and have my flask with me.

Looking to come up for the show from Indianapolis (short 3 hour drive) without a ticket. Does anyone know the situation at this venue and are tickets usually available on the street OR maybe from a friendly fan with an extra ticket and not wanting to ask a insane price.

Now if i didn't have class this day I would be totally waiting out mid-day. But alas. I got to go home after class drop off my crap get my ticket and then make the trek back north to Aragon. I would at least hope to be near the front or wherever the Dance Party takes place.

Not that it was really a choice, don't get me wrong I love System of a Down, but just in terms of who I'm probably never going to see again and in terms of influence over music as a whole and songs who mean more to me New Order wins easily. Plus I saw System before and this show would be my first NO experiance.

I'm psyched. :D

Seems like I'm not the only person under 30 following New Order. I'll be 20 a week from the show. Yet with the Killers and Interpol citing JD as an influence, you hear more recognition of them lately. I'll be as close to the rail as possible, prefferably towards Hooky's side.

I'm 22. As long as they play a healthy dose of NO and JD I can die happy.

I'm going to this show, but I must say, the setlist passed around so far is a bit disappointing. I've seen NO a few times since 1983, yes I'm about their age.

With a body of work spanning 25 years, why play any Joy Division at all. That music was heading to the dust bin til Ian Curtis off'd himself. Now JD gets the cult status effect and as far as I'm concerned, none of JD songs measure up to what they've done since then.

To dedicate 3 JD songs to a setlist of 15 is ridiculous. Get over the JD nostalgia, and get on with New Order. Clearly one of the best bands in the last 25 years!! I just got the WFTSC CD and am really impressed. Love the "Turn" song alot along with WFTSC song.

Any fans of NO who wouldn't mind a pass on the JD stuff?

Personally, I love JD but if they don't play any JD songs I wouldn't be disappointed.

However, since it is near the anniversary of Ian's death and they never played the States as JD, they probably play JD as a tribute to Ian.

As a Mancunian living in Chicago I was delighted to hear that my wife had won the XRT NO press pass competition. So now we get to meet the band, interview them for the XRT VIP lounge and take pictures for the first 3 songs of the set (we will get a photographers pass). That is all we know. Having checked out this site we thought that it would be good to seek some questions from the fans?

Green mill is a nice place, but there are also a few new bars and restaurants in that area. By the way if anyone like Thai food Thai Pastry is on Broadway (about 2 blocks north of lawrence) - it is great and as cheap as chips. Highly rated.

I don't mind them playing JD songs. In fact, I'm looking forward to it since this will probably be my only chance to see the band live. While it would be nice to hear more rare JD songs, I'd rather hear Barney fuck up LWTUA than have no JD songs. However, they could at least change some of their own songs around. It's not like I haven't downloaded dozens of live shows.

Good to hear there will be a few JD tunes. I never really liked JD until about 10 yrs. ago. The album Closer was my 1st JD purchase- great album. Transmission, Digital, Atmosphere, she's lost control - theyre great ones for them to play.

Wow, hearing Ceremony would be be a shot right through to the core for me. Being 25 years now this month since Ian's passing, I'd love whatever's played. What's important is what's appropriate for their mood and what they feel like playing. I mean, they're the artists, aren't they? Cos that's always what ends up being the best show: not forcing anything, and sometimes you end up hearing a song not played in a while, and that show's all the more memorable. I'd be happy whatever gets played. Can't wait til tomorrow. Just hope Barney's foots better for BLT and he's dancing again (even if it's a bit embarrasing.)

Just got back from the show. So Excellent!! As far as setlist goes, they moved things around a bit from the San Fran show plus they added "Your Silent Face" to the encore which consisted of 3 songs. One JD, forgot which one, then YSF and lastly BM.

Barney was telling a lot of jokes but with his Manchester accent and the bouncing accoustics, nobody knew what he was saying. I think he thought we didn't like his jokes, maybe we wouldn't have anyway. In spite of his bad foot, he still went for his spirited Indian dance bit during BLT. It got the crowd going.

The band seemed really on tonite. Great crowd, great light show. Everything you'd hoped for. I'll let others fill in the details.

I was so excited to hear Your Silent Face. Barney asked for a vote between Atmosphere and YSF and it was about even so they played both...so he said. I agree with a prior poster that Barney was making a lot of jokes and you couldn't make them out. Aragon acoustics. Apparently those in the back and balcony were able to hear better. My ears are still ringing. Transmission was unbelievable....DANCE DANCE DANCE DANCE DANCE ON THE RADIO...the crowd was so awesomely loud I thought we were going to bring the plaster down.

The only negative was that the backup vocals were all recorded. Songs like Crystal and JetStream kick *** in part because of the power vocals. Seemed lacking with just the tape.

Now that my dream is fulfilld I am feeling the letdown...will they ever come back again...how long will we have to wait....I don't mind flying to Europe to see them but those festivals aren't my cup of tea. What a nice small venue tonight. Overall it was a pretty darn awesome show.

I just got back from the New Order show at the Aragon and it was awesome! I'm so glad they did Atmosphere and Your Silent Face. I'm happy to see another great influential band and a reasonable price. Crew is a great bar to go to before a show. It's a gay sports bar but the cleanest place in the area!

Just got back from the show. Brilliant performance. The best I've ever seen them. They were all into it far more than on Sunday at Coachella. The venue suited them really well, the crowd were massive for them from the very start, and the sound was brilliant.

It may have been the fact that I was a little stoned, but Hooky's base on Hey Now What You Doing sounded incredible. I was locked into it all the way through the song.

Loved Transmission and LWTYA - these were far, far better than on Sunday - the place went wild for them. Temptation was special too - seemed to go on for about eight minutes, drawing us out for ever to the blue/green/grey eyes bit. Fantastic...

lol...I've listened to alot of New Order live bootlegs and Benard telling joking and cursing are part of the act and can be understood even in a heavy English accent.

totally agree...I was hearing the songs in order in my head as listed for Chicago and it seems like a very good flow...really wish I could have been there.

Show was fantastic. Their tour manager Andy spotted my Dry201 shirt at Smartbar and got me on the guest list.

Barney & Phil came out to the meet and greet. Hooky and Stephen didn't show. I felt bad for Barney, he was in some serious pain with his foot. He was real nice to everyone, but you could tell he was beat.

Best I've ever seen them. Barney spoke between each and every song, which I was happy about. Very personable with the audience. Hooky really worked the crowd and was all over the stage.

At the meet and greet, I also spoke briefly with singer from Assassins. I was really impressed with them as an opening act, and the gal was a cutie. My wife kept asking me if that was my new imaginary girlfriend.

Met a lot of people from here tonight and was really a pleasure meeting you.

Andy, if you do read this site, I just want to thank you once again on behalf of my wife and myself for a great evening. I've been fortunate in both 1993 and this year to get invited to the meet and greets.

Editing my post here, just wanted to say something else. I have been pretty hard on New Order about the length of their past concerts and Barney's half-hearted efforts in the past. While I still believe they could have added 4 or 5 more songs, last night was incredible! Barney made a great effort and I think he enjoyed himself last night. This may very well be a new beginning for New Order. I'd love to see them get back to song writing immediately and maybe in 2 or 3 years come around again. This is their career and there is no reason they can't get back to playing 15 to 20 thousand people venues again and make enough money to make this all worth it for them. I'd like to see them play at least 1 hour and 45 minutes. They have a strong enough song bank to do it. This tour and this album, they have shown a committment to their fans again, and in the USA, they really needed to do that. We needed to see that they gave a shit, and I really pray for a new start.

Here is my humble review of the concert at the Aragon last night. This was my 6th time seeing them, and I must say it was probably the best show I have ever seen. I could only fly out to one show this go-round, and I am glad I picked the Chicago show to attend, because it was probably the best yet of this tour.

First off, the venue reminded me a lot of the Alexandra Palace in London where I saw them play New Year’s eve 1998. Old gothic style, acoustics not so great. Crowd was well behaved, very little jostling. I was right up front, off to stage right (i.e., Phil’s side).

They came on looking poised, relaxed and confident. Barney thanked the crowd, and apologized that he was not so mobile tonight because of his foot injury. He jokingly said he hurt it while surfing in Los Angeles, bitten by a shark! (Of course I knew that he had hurt it while doing his jig during BLT in Oakland).

The set list posted by Nerve is correct. Great set list! Love Vigilantes was a great opener, crowd loved it, I love that melodica. After the song, Barney said something like it was about Vietnam, where he had served… as a photographer. Barney was very nice to the crowd, lots of joking banter between songs, which I (and the crowd) appreciated. I couldn’t catch all of it though, because he didn’t always speak right into the mic. He was generally very relaxed, thanked the crowd for their support. He said it had been too long since they had been to Chicago. He jokingly said he would come more often but these two f**kers (pointing at Hooky and Phil) don’t like to tour!! Of course we know Barney is the one who doesn’t like to tour. He also mentioned that they were getting happier as they got older, they were no longer the miserable sods of youth. He said he liked Chicago, cold like Manchester, not too hot like LA.

Crystal and Regret were great. HNYWD was OK, the crowd was not familiar with it, which is understandable since it’s only been out a week here. Krafty was better, more people seemed to know it. (I know the new album well). Transmission was great live!

Barney introduced Run Wild half-apologizing that it was a slow love song, but he wanted to play it because he thought it was a good song. Although I think it’s a bit too sappy, admittedly live it came across much better. It was kinda unique to see Hooky play a love song. They played the 98 version of True faith, as they have been doing since then. There seemed to be a technical glitch with the drums here. I saw Steve trying to get his tech’s attention before the song, saying his drums were cut out. I think that the main drum line is programmed for this song, but he would normally supplement it with some live drumming, but they turned off the mics on his drum set, so you couldn’t hear the live drumming for this song. It was kind of distracting but it sounded good anyway. Jetstream was good, although the backing female vocals were canned. They played it like on the French show a few weeks ago. WFTSC, best song on the new album, was good live, although Krafty maybe came across best of the new stuff. I think Barney had his own backing vocals canned for Sirens, which was a bit distracting. Maybe Hooky should try doing the backing vocals here….

Quite right sir. It's the drawn out fifteen minute droney synth that makes it the opener, get rid of that and you have a song that is listenable. Maybe my CD player is stuck.

Someone asked about what the T-shirts looked like. The guy in front of me had one on and it shows New Order 2005 Tour and lists: San Francisco, Cochella Festival, Chicago and New York. Apparently they either don't draw a distinction between Oakland and S.F. or it looked better on the T-Shirt.

To the poster that had a less enjoyable outing due to the older fan who harassed him and belittled him that he would know much of NO at all, I can only say that Jerks are Jerks no matter how old or young they are. Being of the older set, I was glad to see how many from all ages were into the band. This site especially highlights the great enthusiasm of their fans. I hope NO stays around another 20 years.

They had more than a few shirts for sale:

1. A white tee with "No" on the front in orange (just like the new album cover), and tour dates on the back, under the heading "New Order North American Tour 2005";

2. Same as above, but a black tee with white lettering;

3. A blue tee resembling the 1987 True Faith record sleeve, with "New Order - True Faith" on the reverse;

4. A green tee resembling the Fac 33 Ceremony/In a Lonely Place record sleeve (nothing on the tee reverse);

5. A black tee resembling the Unknown Pleasures record sleeve, with "Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures" on the reverse.

They also had four tiny buttons (quarter-sized) for $10 a set, all of album covers -- two of which were, IIRC, Technique and Substance.

Same setlist as the show in Oakland but with one glaringly big difference! Your Silent Face, my favorite song! I'm so upset I missed this.

I don't remember when they hit the stage, but there was nearly no deadtime between the Assassins and NO. By the way, Assassins are a local Chicago act from what I've heard, and they were one of the best warm-up acts I've seen. I'd see them stand-alone. They used synths and the drummer used synthetic drums that recall to me dripping water/"poing"ing sound. And it all came together for a great effect. Also liked the dual guy/girl vocals.

Anyway, about NO. Funny thing about the tour shirt saying SanFran instead of Oakland - my dad noticed that Stephen had a skull and crossbones shirt on. After he realized they were in Oakland (where we used to live) he goes "oh, he must have gotten a Raiders shirt." Thought that was kinda funny. Looked like it. I ended up with the black No 2005 tour shirt - liked the white/orange print one better, but I bet I'd stain it soon with chili dog or something. Also wearing the TF leaf one now. I've got measly camera pics, I'll be trying to pass them along soon.

Obsessed fan seeing them for the first time point of view: FUCKING. AWESOME.

Yeah, Barney's jokes were lame, and it's weird to see him dancing like such an old fart, but man, it was fun. I stood right in front of the right speaker, and all I gotta say is, Hooky is the man. Growing up, I was completely in love with Bernard Sumner, but last night, I couldn't take my eyes off Peter Hook. All those bass lines that drove so many NO songs - it was so cool to see them played up close, right in front of me. I was oddly mesmerized.

I enjoyed the whole show, but the highlights for me were the opener (obviously), Temptation, and Your Silent Face (!!!). I enjoyed Crystal, Regret, and a couple of the new songs more than I expected. When they came out for the encore, everybody around me started screaming for Blue Monday. The band wanted the audience to "vote" on the encore song - Atmosphere vs. YSF. Are you kidding me? Atmosphere w/out Ian? No way. YSF all the way. I had to tell the girl next to me that YSF was a way better choice than BM, too Luckily, they played both songs, and then busted out BM as a surprise. I'm so glad they played a longer encore than at other shows.

Lowlight of the show: Some fucker stole my setlist at the end. I begged a roadie for the last setlist on the stage - Stephen's. He threw it down to me, and a security guard got in my way from grabbing it off the floor, giving some dude (I hate Some Dude ) just the second he needed to grab it as I reached the floor. I followed him and said, "Can I at least see the setlist you just stole from me?" And he showed it to me without an ounce of sympathy. Fucker

Yeah, for "encore" it was both Atmosphere then YSF. Then BM. And they were in a really great mood. Lots of banter and joking around, with corny rimshots by Stephen. So good to see that. Said that Chicago was one of their fav's cos its so like Manchester: cold and not hot like LA. Barney's foot wasn't stopping him from spinning during BLT or TF either.

Yeah, Assassins were good and a good match for NO. I saw them open for Zwan some time ago and was impressed. I'm not sure they even have a proper album out yet. I'm assuming Joe Shanahan or Billy Corgan hooked them up with NO. Good for them.

It's good to hear it went so well. I have heard good things about Assassins. They opened one of the nights that Zwan played at Metro in January 2003. I got to see one of those shows, but not the one where Assassins opened up for them. Anyways, when I saw New Order was playing Chicago at the Aragon, I really want to come and see the show, but to no avail. I had an exam yesterday, so I couldn't fly out there even if I wanted to. What was more salt in the wound was that Garbage is playing tonight at Metro. Luckily I got to see Garbage last week in Toronto, which was fantastic. Metro is a good venue, and it would been great to see back to back shows at Aragon and Metro, not to mention the Smart Bar Peter Hook DJ set. But if you are a fan of both Garbage and New Order, and love Chicago as much as I do, that would have been one fantastic trip! Oh well.

Yeah, Barney's jokes were lame, and it's weird to see him dancing like such an old fart, but man, it was fun. I stood right in front of the right speaker, and all I gotta say is, Hooky is the man. Haha, yeah i was talking to a nice girl from Mexico City about the weird effect concerts have one people to go against eachother. How more passive can you get than a No fan? I was up on the right side too. Did you get a load of those Brits? I was right beside them. I was mesmerized by Hooky too. Did you catch a glimpse of him leaning over the lightboard during the warm-up? I tried not to make a scene. I've got cellphone pics of him over there if you want em. It was amazing to see so many young people there like me- i'll be 20 in a week. I was seeing them for the first time, and loved it!

I actually wasn't sure which ones were the Brits. I might not have been able to see them b/c I'm short! But it was nice that they got a shout-out from Barney.

I don't think I saw Hooky leaning over the lightboard, but damn did I wish I had a camera for that show. He played half the show right in front of my face! (I was a little further to the right than you - I think you were in front of his normal place on stage, and I was in front of the spot where he played to the crowd, so to speak.) Hey, what was the deal with the metal detectors if anything? Could you sneak in a digital camera and take pictures?

I don't think they have metal detectors. The Aragon just doesn't allow cameras most of the time. I think I saw only one flash go off the whole night, so I'm assuming the only pics taken were professional, phonecams, or disposables without flash.

Great show. Even better than I expected.

As one of those who always has something bad to say about their setlists since about '89 onwards, this right here looks like they kind of nailed it. Of course, I've got personal favorites that they probably won't ever play again, but this looks like about a pretty good balance of promoting their new album (4 tracks), giving a nod to their origins (3JD tracks thogh I could probably go with one less) and a few fan favorites (LV and YSF). And even though I can't imagine Run Wild knocking anyone out (I'd love to see Dream Attack with this current lineup here maybe), it's kind of cool that they're willing to pull it out and give it a try. They probably haven't had a similarly paced song in their setlist since We all stand. I was never really that sorry that I missed them last go around based partly on the setlists and also on the fact that I really couldn't get into the last record, but that set right there to me ranks up there with the '98 Apollo show as probably the best set of tunes they've pulled out on one night since the 80s. Now if they'd just replace Blue Monday with The Perfect Kiss then it'd really be on...

amazing show. i've been a fan for many years now. i almost lost it during love vigilantes and transmission. then again during the encore. the whole night was just amazing. don't know about that opener tho. i just hope the guy with the recording device implanted in his hat comes 'round here. wires hanging down the back of your neck are a dead giveaway.

This was one of the best Concerts from NO I've seen. He was on track. Also got to see Hook on Monday at the smart bar. Neo was also awsome. I eneded winning 1 of two CD's with all the groups autograph. Took many pics at smartbar and at the concert. there should be a page here where we can download pics for each place they went on tour. What ya think Spotnick, The guy with the Hacienda shirt!

The only thing that appears missing would be songs off of "Technique", and as someone else mentioned, apparently they dont have any of that albums material programmed. Hard to believe that this is the one album they wouldn't do work on considering at least among American Audiences, its probably what broke them in this country (I believe they got Qwest in '85 or '86, and it was Technique and "Round and Round" which followed the club hits, Blue Monday, True Faith, and Blue Monday 1988, that really seemed to attract their core American Audience). Oh well, you can't have everything you want, it just bums me a bit that my fav album by far has not really been touched on at all in either of the concerts I attended.

I would say that Substance was the album that actually "broke" 'em here, but your point about Technique is well taken. Strange that it's adored by critics and fans alike, yet largely ignored by the band lately (in live sets and box sets alike).

The show was fucking incredible. I've only seen the band one other time, and that was at a giant outdoor amphitheater in '93 (and we all know how that tour was). I never dreamed I'd see the band in a venue smaller than 10,000 people, and now I have. I can excuse the shitty venue they played in because I was 50 feet away from the stage. My only regrets were in the song selection (no SLC/Ceremony/other old stuff), but since they're pushing 50 years old they've earned the right to play what they want to play. I was sort of sated, though, because they played YSF and that ranks in my top 5 if not top 3 NO songs...

They were in fine talkative form, and Barney seemed full of jokes. Funny thing was Steve treated them like a lounge act, doing the "Badum-cha" rimshot thing on the drums after Barney's jokes - something I've never heard them do before.

Steve kicked off HNWYD too fast, leading Barney to comment afterwards that it was the punk version because Steve's on too much crystal meth and hotel pornography ;) Steve's on crystal meth and addicted to hotel pornography

As the primate said, Hooky dedicated Transmission to Joe Shanahan (the owner of Metro/Smart Bar/Double Door) "because he makes Chicago feel like home for me".

I didn't go to any of the pre/post show affairs because my wife was with me and she doesn't get into the whole NO thing, though she was glad to have gone (she wanted them to play more of the hits, of course - she's the "fan" they continue to play BM/BLT/Temptation/True Faith/etc for).

I was more up front-and-center while she stood near the back of the venue - right next to Sean Hayes of course! He's the actor who plays Jack on the TV show "Will and Grace" and I went to high school with him. She's now had her requisite celebrity sighting at the Aragon - mine was John Cusack 15 years ago at a Sonic Youth/Public Enemy show there.

One last favor? If that included a flight to Chicago and tickets to show, I don't think that would have happened :P. Would I know you Love Vigilante? Like have we ever met or talked online related to Act IV?

I am hoping a Billy Corgan show is on when I do come to Chicago, which will be between June 30 and July 3rd. My brother and I's history with Metro was able to get secure us after show passes when we returned to Chicago in January 2003 for the final of 5 Zwan shows there, but it didn't result in another Act IV. Joe basically told us last year that the only way we would be able to do a final show was if he were able to get a big headliner like Kill Hannah to play again at the show. And the only way that can happen is if it was some sort of special anniversary for the band. So the only way another one is happening is if we can guarantee a sell out.

But anyways, back to New Order. Is there an audio recording of the show floating around somewhere?

Hey, for those of us there early enough, how about that music? My ears perked up when I heard an Enjoy the Silence mix, Some Pet Shop Boys, Pulp, Blur...and even a Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb female-sung uber-mix? Or am I just losing it?

Great show. I'm glad I went. I'd only seen the Corgan festival version of the band before, so I was happy to see a full, headline set.

The venue was great, it was very interesting walking around before it was filled up looking at the details.

Too many people around me only knew the very popular songs. Almost all of them were lost when the new songs were played. $50.00 is a lot of money when you only know four songs, but they were there and they were enthusiastic. They were also very drunk. That's what I get for planting myself near one of the bars.

My only complaint was that I didn't get to any of the NOOL events. I was in and out of Chicago so quickly that I didn't have time to do much else.

Thanks to everybody else who is posting a review, it's interesting to read others' opinions about the show.

the Pink Floyd Cover was done by Scissor Sisters. Ana Matronic, who does some vocals on Jetstream, is a member of that band. I'm not sure if she sings the PF cover, or if one of the guys in SS does it (the lead singer has a somewhat feminine voice).

The opening band (The Assassins) were okay, but I found myself wanting them to hurry the hell up so NO could get on stage. I was pretty close up, near the guys who were holding the giant ass flag. The performance itself was amazing, I was thinking it might've been somewhat of a letdown based on their performances on the DVDs. They were pretty enthusiastic, the light show was awesome, and the performances sounded just like the recordings. I kinda wished Gillian was doing the keyboards, so that I could've seen the authentic NO, but whatever. The new guy did pretty good. I also wished they played a few of my own personal faves: Perfect Kiss, Thieves Like Us, Subculture, Vanishing Point.

Had an amazing night...definitely the best concert I've ever been too. I was right in front of Hooky two rows back...perfect spot. As others have said the band we are all in great form, they playedwonderfully w/ loads of energy, lots of banter, Barney telling jokes w/ Stephen doing the BUH DUM CHING after the punchline, Hooky was all over the place and really screaming on his backup vox (particularly Tranmission and LWTUA). Though Barney was in a lot of pain he managed to do a bit of his goofy dancing during BLT.
Highlights for me were Love Vigilantes (perfect opener!), Temptation, and YSF. I actually think this was the best setlist of this decade so far.

There seemed to have been a few mishaps: towards the end True Faith the guy running the sequences from the Powerbook looked at Hooky and held up four fingers and shrugged. The song might have ended four bars early. Did anyone else notice this? Also at the beginning of Blue Monday Stephen's keyboard had no output and Barney seemed a little confused.

After the show I went to the after party at Neo. Drank, danced, and chatted with a few NOOLers(WenOrder, Spotnick, DJ Kamar). Saw drugrep outside the bar but I'm not sure he made it in (Did you?). Although I ended up losing my favorite coat at Neo I stil had an excellent time. Thanks again NOOL for putting on the party!

I've tried to stay away from posting my own review in another post. But you about summed it up for me. Starting out with LV was just amazing. Unfortuantley it was at the same time the four drunks started pushing people around.

We where right were Hooky came over most of the night right in front to the left a bit. Just fantastic. I really felt sorry for this one lady who was getting pushed around a lot by the drunks. You can see my other post for that.

His shirt landed right in front of me - well, into 10 hands of crazy people. I gave it a try, but my conscience kicked in and let it go as soon as I saw it was clearly caught. Oddly enough, looked like a girl ended up with it. Good to see.

Got to Green Mill at about 4:40, but no one was in there (was running late, had to forgo the 'L' for a cab. Had everyone left by then?

Got to the Aragon and waited in line on the side of the building, talked to some nice folks from Ohio (can't remember your names though, had to run to the shop to get some water for me and the Mrs.,...It was the bloke who gave away his extra ticket , and the nice couple (girl wearing a red England jersey/guy wearing a Moog shirt). A bit scary all the crackheads roaming and asking for change though

Loved the venue, drinks were pricy but strong (Note, best to send your girl to get the drinks, they make em EXTRA strong). Assassins were fantastic, goddamn the girl in the band was beautiful. A bit buzzed then, so got a pic of the girl (much to my fiancee's chagrin )

New Order got on stage, and I died. I was someone else. Love Vigilantes started, and I lost it. Crystal. Regret. Transmission. BLT. True Faith. Blue Monday. A madhouse, and I was on top of the world. (If anyone is wondering, I was the cunt yelling for "This Time of Night" after every song and yelling out for Phil). Also, shoutout to the girl w/ black curly hair, glasses, black top wearing a glow-necklace (didn't catch your name either :( ) who was discussing songs w/ me. (She insisted Atmosphere would be played, I was pushing for some older NO).

Still half deaf, but the memories will last forever. Cheers. Long live New Order. I'm out.

Just got back home from Chicago, but have to say the show was just amazing. I flew across country to see them in 2001 (vancouver) and that was special for being my first NO experience... but this was by far the best concert. Phil really adds to the sound, doesn't he?

I didn't get a chance to download it, and now both torrents are not working :/.

Here is part 2 of my review.

First off, since people wanted more details, let me re-start at the start. We arrived early, around 6:30, just as they were starting to let people in. Already a huge line, but we were still able get a good place up front, right in front of Phil (I’ve been right in front of Hooky before, so I thought I would try a change). There were about 4-5 people in front of me. I was the white guy wearing a “recycle” white T-shirt, my girlfriend is Chinese. As someone else mentioned, I also loved the warm-up tunes, Depeche Mode “Enjoy the silence”, the Scissors “Comfortably Numb”, etc.

The Assassins came on round about 7:30, but we were all just impatient for NO to come on. Young band, they try hard, the bassist had an uncanny resemblance to Hooky circa 1984, with the close-cropped beard. They struck me as trying to be a cross between a young New Order and Maroon 5. I didn’t think they were that good (although better than the openers for U2 last week – Kings of Leon – Yech!!!) The Assassins played till about 8:20, then we impatiently waited for New Order to start, and they finally came on at 8:45, and we were in Heaven! The set just flew by! I have already posted my review of the first part of the show, so here are more details that I can remember:

Transmission was awesome! Sounded great, good energy.

BLT was also very good. Towards the end of the song, Barney got his roadie “Roger” singing with him, and let him sing a couple of lines on his own. I must say, Roger was pretty darn good! Barney joked that he should let Roger finish the set.

LWTUA – simply awesome. Hooky screaming into the mic “C’mon Chicago!”

Temptation – the high point of the show, the crowd went nuts, everyone sang along. Sounded fantastic. Hooky was sweating profusely, and at the end of the song, tore off his shirt and walked off bare torso with the rest of the band.

After a short break, they came back on, and Barney asked if we wanted to hear Atmosphere or YSF. YSF of course! Inexplicably, the cheering was about equal so Barney said “well I guess we will play both then”. I thought to myself, well, they have been playing well over an hour now, so I guess they finally axed BM off the set list! (Which I didn’t really mind because they always complain about having to play it).

Atmosphere was good, but maybe a bit to slow and moody for me well as a live tune. I was yelling out for them to play Ceremony (keep the tradition alive, what the hell). Others around me joined in, but to no avail of course (by the way – Ceremony live is simply incredible! Once you have seen the way they play Ceremony live, you will never forget it. So much energy and power, not like the studio version. Check out the little snippet of Ceremony on the 5 11 DVD, under the extras, from New year’s eve 1998 – unfreaking believable live, trust me, I was there.)

Anyway, I digress. YSF – what can I say? Classic NO, beautiful, simple, perfect. Love that melodica. Hooky pulls out the big old 6-string bass for this one, and I love that bass line.

So I thought, well, that’s the last song, right? But wait, no! They played Blue Monday! And without complaining about having to play it! Somehow, that made it sound way better! Plus Barney added in the Kylie Minogue sample “Can’t get you out of my head” near the beginning, hilarious. (Kylie does a mix of her song using the bass and drum line from BM, so touché!) Unfortunately, Barney seemed to re-injure his foot towards the end. He finally started to try his trademark jig with a bit more vigor during this song, but landed a bit awkwardly. I saw him grimace, and he limped very slowly to the keyboards to finish the song. Then goodnight!

Hooky (who now had on a black NO T-shirt), tore off his shirt, tossed it into the crowd, and walked off bare torso again.

All in all, simply magnificent. Best yet! Barney was in fine form musically, although he couldn’t do his jig b/c of his foot injury. But he was in a great mood despite the foot. Very relaxed and confident.

Hooky was simply amazing, incomparable. He did the whole bass-god thing with even more gusto then ever, which is hard to imagine. Roaming around the stage from one far end to the other, sweating profusely. He played his bass so low that it really WAS scraping the ground on numerous occasions. I love the way he would eyeball into the audience, pirate like. Plus all his trademark moves, that only he can do authentically (anybody else would look so Spinal Tap). Words cannot describe how awesome it is too watch him go at it 110%.

Simply a perfect set. Except of course, if they could throw in Ceremony. But they played for 1 hour 45 minutes (until 10:30), which is very good for these guys.

I can’t make it to New York, I have to return to my regularly scheduled life, but I hope and pray that they return to North America in the fall so I can see them again.

It was a real pleasure meeting you guys at the pre-gathering in Chicago, Its dedicated individuals like yourselves that spread and keep alive and well the New Order legacy and your efforts are paying off!!! I have to say I was at their gig in Mt. View, CA in ’01 my first N.O. show ever, and it was everything I had expected, top notch, however the show in Chicago was over-the-top! Hooky was really enjoying himself on stage showing of his skills, Barney as well, I just hope Barney is alright from his injury in CA because he was limping a bit near the end … –Neo after the show was JAMMED, by the time I arrived the line was down to the street and they were only letting people in as people left and there weren’t to many people that left once they were in *sigh*. First, I have to thank Corey for getting me into the meet & greet. You fulfilled one item on my "gotta do before I die" list and I am eternally grateful. Just got the pictures back so I will be sending those shortly.

I got to the Aragon about 4pm, went over to the Green Mill for about half an hour which was way before anyone else was there. Cool having a beer in a Capon bar though!

I have posted pictures to our blog. We won a press pass to interview the band (unfortunately Bernie was at the hospital having his foot looked at). Peter Hook was quite charming and very friendly - even let us hang around during his next interview with XM radio.

Great show, even cooler to get to go into the photograper pit to get up close and take pictures. I managed 145 pictures, the blog has the best. I might start a new blog and upload the lot, i will post again if i do.

While listening to the bit-torrent, i had a sudden revelation: they played HNWYD too fast! That explains Barney's joke that it was the pumped version. And that Steve is addicted to crystal meth and speed (both the same though)...and hotel porn!

Now I know why that was the only song i did not instantly recognize when they started playing it.

Also, did anyone else notice that there was a problem with Hooky's bass during Temptation? It happened when he wandered too far away, it sounded like it was cutting in and out. I think his transmitter was out of range, running low on battery or something.

New Order is a joy undivided

By Joshua Klein Special to the Tribune Published May 5, 2005 Even with 25 years under its collective belt--more, if you include its slightly earlier incarnation as Joy Division--New Order still often behaves like it has stumbled fortuitously into its place in the post-punk pantheon. For years the band has exhibited a remarkable lack of ego, its particular genius stemming from an endearing casualness.

But the more these affable blokes from Manchester shrug off any honorifics, the more their followers offer them. The thousands at the sold-out Aragon Ballroom on Tuesday night worshiped the band like a spirit-fearing ancient tribe witnessing a solar eclipse.

New Order, for its part, has gradually shifted from being almost confrontationally aloof to grudgingly accepting, and perhaps even being proud of, its legacy. That's noticeable from the number of Joy Division songs the group now regularly and enthusiastically sticks into its set.

"That was a beautiful song by Joy Division," singer Bernard Sumner said after the group played its first encore of the spectral and spectacular "Atmosphere." He then said, "This is a beautiful song by New Order," before the band began the hypnotic pulse of "Your Silent Face."

Those two songs capped a stunning evening of music that ranged from rockers such as "Crystal" to more dance-oriented tracks such as "True Faith," "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Blue Monday." Hot off a celebrated performance at California's Coachella festival, New Order proceeded to eclipse that set in even better spirits and better form.

Sumner played jaunty melodica to start the group's wartime meditation "Love Vigilantes," while drummer Stephen Morris deftly embellished various programmed rhythms. New member Phil Cunningham helped keep songs such as "Krafty" afloat during the quiet bits, then aided the band as it soared into one ecstatic chorus after another.

Yet the heart of New Order remains bassist Peter Hook, the melodic hum of his guitar the group's most identifiable trademark and his splay-legged stances and lurching strumming the most overt link to the band's punk roots. As the minimalist "Temptation" hit euphoric heights and "Regret" the right notes of romantic longing--and even when the band took a breather with the banal "Jetstream"--Hook's playing always provided a vital boost.

That was never more apparent than when the group pounded out furious renditions of Joy Division's "Transmission" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart." In fact, all four members seemed to tap into stores of power and energy they sometimes kept in check during lighter numbers, as if recognizing the lasting impact of these songs and the need to do them justice.

New Order crackles with energy May 5, 2005 BY THOMAS CONNER Sun-Times Staff Reporter

When New Order finished playing "Transmission" -- a quirky song by New Order's doomed, post-punk predecessor, Joy Division -- singer Bernard Sumner hissed and said, "Enough of that rock s---! We want you to start dancing!" And, true to the band's hits-heavy set, they launched into "True Faith" as if it were a brand-new nightclub sensation. Like most of the set Tuesday night at the Aragon Ballroom, these were songs they seemed obliged to play. God forbid a New Order concert should pass without "True Faith," "Bizarre Love Triangle" and the requisite Joy Division chestnut. But during "Transmission," something happened that makes New Order shows still worth seeing after (gulp) a quarter of a century. This band -- a British outfit we sometimes know more from dance floors and John Hughes movie soundtracks -- actually rocked. Sumner matched the songs' quaint but deceptively foreboding mood with uncharacteristic growling and gurgling (it's a bit low for his range), while bassist Peter Hook barked and shrieked randomly. And for a few minutes, the New Order experience was about pogoing and pumping fists rather than twirling and dancing. Post-punk, indeed. Tuesday's energetic show was spiced with such moments. Given that the band's live incarnation is a genuine guitar-bass-drums-vocals quartet, the occasional use of pre-recorded synthesizers and beats seemed surprisingly intrusive. The best songs were those that allowed guitarist Phil Cunningham to cut loose ("Regret," "Crystal") and let Hook show off his chiming namesake hooks in soloing poses at the edge of the stage (nearly every song, but especially the new "Hey Now What You Doing" and the opener, "Love Vigilantes"). Hook was manic, and once again he proved to be an invaluable asset in the band's attack -- something not said about many bass players. Looking like a bedraggled Alan Rickman, Hook prowled the spotlight all night, plucking out the alarmingly simple bass melodies that make New Order, like so many of the British bands from that early '80s era, sound as good in concert and on the dance floor as it does in the car or on an iPod. Sometimes he's providing the groove, sometimes he's taking the melody, often he's doing both. Again, this magic peaked during a Joy Division song, the classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart." It had its typically lumbering moments, but when Hook stopped bellowing indecipherably, dropped the melody and started grinding into his black bass next to drummer Stephen Morris' explosive kit, the two sparked some crackling fire, which Hook tamed to the end with an absurd but wildly cheered one-note solo back at stage's edge. Sumner introduced all the songs -- no suspense, no pretensions -- cracked jokes and thanked Chicago for waiting 12 years since the band's last local show. And, really, it's that down-to-earth attitude that makes New Order still so engaging at this late date. The band didn't break new ground, by any means, but it rocked -- no extended remix required.

The British dance-rock kings of ’80s ennui New Order had spent the last decade on hiatus, with only the modestly successful comeback album “Get Ready” in 2001 to jostle their fans’ slumber. But the group has bounced back this year with the full-scale return to form “Waiting for the Sirens’ Call,” and it played its first Chicago gig in a dozen years at the Aragon Ballroom Tuesday, putting on a show that was jaw-droppingly crowd-pleasing. Unlike in the ’80s, they didn’t rant about how much they hate Americans. Unlike at Lollapalooza in 1993, they were more animated and personable than simply saying “Thankyew” at the end of each number. Singer-guitarist Bernard Sumner introduced each song by name and even indulged in some stabs at humor. And if there was a hint of Ricky Gervais cruelty to his jabs — “What do you expect? You only paid $5 to get in,” he said at one point, adding, “That was a joke” (tickets were actually $50, and T-shirts almost as much) — the band nevertheless rocked. They mixed new material with old hits in a well-paced 90-minute set, and even threw in a few songs from their previous incarnation as Joy Division. The sold-out crowd loved it, chiming in on “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” which has to be the most unlikely audience sing-along song since the Ramones’ “Pinhead” with its “gabba gabba hey” chorus.

New Order long ago established itself as the most faceless of major rock bands. Bassist Peter Hook was the only one who really seemed to adore being a rock star. Lugging his bass around at knee level like a mover with a bad back, he hauled the band’s music up and dragged it out on Tuesday, as Sumner, drummer Steven Morris and guitarist-keyboardist Phil Cunningham fell into step behind him. That in turn allowed Hook the freedom to amble out and take spotlight bass solos behind the speaker banks at the sides of the stage. Otherwise, as ever when New Order is at its best, the music was a model of unadorned efficiency, with the jagged rhythms locking into place, as when Sumner and Hook teamed up to drive the closing “Temptation” to its conclusion. “We’ll see you in another 12 years,” Sumner said, again adding, “That was a joke.” Indeed it was, as the band returned for a three-song encore, finishing with “Blue Monday,” which left everyone happy. The Assassins opened. Taking the old Nirvana formula of mixing soft and loud to extremes, they veered from melodic pop to industrial drone. If they ever write an irresistible chorus that unites the two, their days as an opening act will be over and they’ll be the ones worrying about how to sustain success as well as New Order.

Great reviews of the show....sums up an amazing performance! Transmission still gives me chills... My wife willingly came along with me, especially to watch me jump up and down like an idiot (who would do it again in a heartbeat), but in the end she outshined me. She was the one in the pink shirt who grabbed Hooky's encore T-shirt!!! Iron-clad two fisted hold! Between that and hearing her hum LWTUA unconsciously in our hotel room I could not have been more proud!!! We had an unbelievable time in Chicago, and can't wait to return.

Ok thanks. I wasn't at the show, but I am actually originally from Winnipeg-my brothers and I like to call it "The City That Never Wakes Up" haha. Spotnick, is there any particular reason why New Order hasn't been able to play Toronto since '93? I am just curious, I am not sure if you know or not. I have only been a fan since 2001, but I also noticed they played many Area One dates in 2001 except the Toronto one I know they weren't at that. New Order is really the only band I would have gone to see, so I didn't end up going to that.

I don't think there's much left to say that hasn't been said already, but I thought I'd say it anyway. :)

I've been waiting over 20 years to see this band -- the last time they were nearby, I had tickets to see them in Chicago on the Republic tour and my car killed itself (I almost followed its lead :-) ).

I expected the show to be a spiritual experience, however, I was completely unprepared for how truly GREAT it was going to be. Based on live CDs and DVDs I wasn't prepared for how truly good they would sound and look live -- I'm not sure if this is because the band doesn't translate well to tape or if they were just exceptionally ON that night, but the show was nothing short of amazing.

I can die a happy happy man. :)

I could die happier if I could get in to download the .mp3 bootleg, but I'll settle for happy happy. :D

The concert was amazing! I didn't get to meet any NOOLers, but that's because I hardly post on this place.

Looking back on the after party pictures I now remember seeing Spotnick, Aaron(on the redline platform) and some others who's names I don't know. I was front row, way on the right side, right in front of Hooky at times. Love Vigilantes, Transmission & Your Silent Face were my personal favorites.

Somehow I believe seeing them just once was enough, it was too special of a night that to even try to reconstruct it would be a crime.

Hey Cotch - how's the teeth? (I needed the Derby County post to remind which of you as which)

If you have Bit Torrent downloaded amd installed, you should be able to click on the link and then it will open Bit Torrent to seek anyone else on the web who has their Bit Torrent open with the same file. It will start to download and, when you have some to share, it will simultaneously upload for other users (don't worry, it's quite safe). Expect several hours (perhaps overnight) and the rates will depend on how many users are uploading. Much, much longer if you're on dial-up. When your download is complete it is considered polite to keep you Torrent open for others to upload (you are then "seeding").

The result should be a folder full of .WAV files that you can burn straight to CD.

It's worth it, the recording's pretty good.
